Why are doornails considered to be so very dead? This is a very interesting and intriguing question. Please reply in three or more sentences.

William and Mary Morris, in The Morris Dictionary of Word and Phrase Origins, quote a correspondent who points out that it could come from a standard term in carpentry. If you hammer a nail through a piece of timber and then flatten the end over on the inside so it cant be removed again (a technique called clinching), the nail is said to be dead, because you cant use it again. Doornails would very probably have been subjected to this treatment to give extra strength in the years before screws were available. So they were dead because theyd been clinched.

I hope this is helpful.

Once again, I'm going to have to object.

I DO NOT like the direction of this thread.

When you and capper start talking -- in a thread currently titled "BF" -- about screws and clenching, it worries me that 85 is gonna ask for pics.

Scott Walker says not to clench, and just enjoy it. Afterwards, we can all work together.

Only if Phil Zone were a Koch Industry.

On PBS, in the recitation of donors for "Frontline," they pronounced that David H. Cock, by the way. I always thought it was a homophone of the drug. Still, I am OK with it.

Must be a different guy.

Our guys HATE PBS.

I just know it!

Speaking of PBS...when Pat Mitchell took over, she redecorated her office and put in granite countertops. She also had a driver. Cars, parking spaces, metros and such are for little people.

I win. So much relevance -- political, board, and otherwise -- packed into one post.
