Upset Special: The Jayhawks picked the wrong week to engage in a multiple-round altercation with the KU basketball team. The Golden Eagles bring the nation's second-longest win streak (eight) and a top 20 offense to town. While coach Mark Mangino has downplayed the incidents, you've got to think they've affected the Kansas players' game-week preparation.

Southern Miss 33 Kansas 30

Bruce Feldman

It's been a chaotic week for KU with all of the drama involving the football and basketball teams. This is the first of three consecutive road games for a young USM team -- but it's a very talented bunch. They have some really gifted skill players and will be a handful for the nation's No. 72 pass defense. I'll go with the upset.

The pick is Southern Miss 38, Kansas 35.

I bet Corso likes Southern Miss too. And Dr. Lou and Mark May.
It matters not. The Fighting Manginos will live up to their name. Actually, they already have.

IMO, not smart to use the brouhaha as a reason we lose this week. I'm thinking the opposite.

I'll say this...I'll be more surprised if we score 35 or less than if we give up 30 or more...

That's really messy, but I think it makes sense.

Unless Dez is out, I agree with this.

The Fighting Mangino's take out some frustration on Saturday. Hawks run away with it.

What are they going to beat us with, a win streak from last year against ho-hum competition? And a quickly aging, overblown media spectacle? Good luck with that.

I see us winning with a better coached, more talented, pissed off football team playing at home.

Is Sharp playing? Will it matter if he doesn't?

Kirk, I agree with everything you said, but I think it can be shortened.

I think that matters way more than anything else.

Agree. I just hope they don't whip out their big winning streak and lash us to death with it.

While Sharp as key for his leadership and speed, I see Opurum and Lewis being able to take most of the load off for Sharp this weekend so he can get fully recovered for conference play.

Fish: I agree that if Dez is out that's a blow, but Tertavian Ingram looked good to me against UNoCo. So we could still survive with Wilson, Meier, McDoog and Ingram.

Gutter: having Sharp will matter.

I gotta laugh a little bit at anyone guessing as to the availability of our guys, given Mangino's remarkable secrecy.

i thought the same thing fish: us scoring less than 35 is less likely than us giving up that many.

i also don't believe the hype about the "distraction" of the little spats. this isn't the first time this sort of thing has happened.

I think back to 2007 and the Orange Bowl run. Everyone was picking us to lose every week. They had no confidence then, they have no confidence now. That's fine, we know what we have.

Nothing new. USM talks about wanting to win this game for national respect, but the problem is we still have to play for national respect and were in the top 25. So I don't see that being a factor. Fact of the matter is if we don't beat ourselves, we win this game. I'm still trying to figure out how someone on here got that they have a stronger schedule. Uh, yah, right.

Meanwhile, everybody's favorite prognosticator Phil Steele has us winning 34-24
http://www.philsteele.com/Blogs/Sep09/DBSep23.html

Apparently the UTEP game was enough to change his mind about KU. He had USM #27 in his preseason top 40, KU was not in his top 40 at all.

is the bigxii underrated? overrated? or neither? are our "bad" as bad as our "best" are good?

we seem way better than the worse, and not nearly as good as the best, but we're a good team. i think we're a team that could beat or at least compete with the best of other conferences (except maybe the sec). maybe i've got the blinders on, but we're not as good as we have been, but we're still pretty good. we're kind of boring. we put up huge numbers but we don't have the swagger we used to, and i can't put my finger on it. that's one of the things that's got me worried. the o-bowl team was under-rated because no one wanted to believe. i KNEW we were good, our guys knew we were. we just don't seem like that. are we that young?
