On this day in 1968, the Kansas Jayhawks opened their season with a visit to Champaign, Illinois to take on the Fighting Illini. Kansas defeated Illinois 47-7. Dave Holt returned an interception for 75 yards, which still ranks as the third longest return by an opposing player at Memorial Stadium and the sixth longest by an opponent in Illinois football history.

The 1968 Kansas team went on to finish the season at 9-2, losing a heartbreaker 14-15 in the 1969 Orange Bowl against Penn State. Their only other loss that year was to Oklahoma, 23-27.
