I don't know...he's under control for a few more years, and 1B/DH-types aren't the ones you pay for.

how do you justify Pena as a catcher that we can contend with?

Because, among AL catchers with as many or more plate appearances as Pena this season, only four have a higher OPS. Granted, he's exceeding projections, but even the projections have him hitting better than league average (for all players). You'll take that out of your catcher any day. Pena's not part of the problem.

Who is Myers? I thought they took Crow first round

Wil Myers is a catcher they took in the fourth (I think?) who they had been rumored to be considering in the first. It's an example of the Royals finally spending some of the most cost-effective money in baseball: overpay for premium guys beyond the first-round of the draft. It's probably the single quickest way to fix a farm system, and it continues a promising trend (Melville last year).

However, because they're going to pay Myers first-round money (about $2MM I believe), they will wait to announce the signing so as not to piss off MLB more than they need to.

Apparently they have pissed off Selig with their bonus offer to Myers. Peter Gammons has blogged that Selig is threatening to withhold the promised All-Star game from KC if they follow through with the Meyers offer.
Looks like a double standard, where is the outrage when the Yankees overpay for international talent?

That's selig's job--to look out for the owners. Everything will be fine. This is just how the game is played.

Have they announced the All star game for sure or just a rumor for right now?

Fenway's also trying to get the 2012 game. It turns 100 that year. Never mind they had one in 1999.

This kind of thing amuses me...here's the logic chain:

--> The Royals go over slot to sign Moustakas, Hosmer, and Melville (among others).
--> The Royals draft Wil Myers in the 4th round, who everyone knows will need to be overpaid to sign.
--> The Royals are supposedly awarded the 2012 All-Star Game.
--> The Royals overpay Myers.
--> Selig allegedly threatens to take back the 2012 All-Star Game because the Royals overpaid Myers. Boston is rumored to be in contention.
-->
Boston overpays their 10th round pick by about 500%.
--> People should stop worrying.

Seeing an all-star game is definitely on my list of things I need to do before I die and if we get it here then that would be all the better.

Anybody know how Moustakas and Hosmer are doing by the way? Every time I go on mlb.com to look at affiliate stats nothing ever comes up.

Crow will get signed everyone knows that, even Hoch didn't go back in the draft twice.

With the pick at #2, we need a college impact bat. A real Ryan Braun or Evan Longoria type to produce immediately.

And you wonder why I call NY and Boston the evil empires. Thanks for finding yet another example that illustrates the point.

Why is that a bad thing? It's exactly what the Royals are (and should be) doing.

The bad thing is that there seems to be a double standard. Boston and New York are allowed to overspend and all is good, KC does it, and there is hell to pay.

Agreed Fish the Royals should play by the market other team established. I should have been more clear. The fact that the Bostons and NY's of the world get the blind eye is what irritates me.
