The Jayhawks visit San Diego State for a two game series tonight and Wednesday. Both games will have an 8PM CST start time. Tuesday night’s game can be heard via a free web cast (just visit www.kuathletics.com, go to baseball, and then click on schedule). Wednesday’s game will be broadcast on KLWM AM 1320. For those fans outside the Lawrence area just visit www.klwn.com for the live feed.

Probable Pitchers
Tuesday 8PM: Lee Ridenhour (3-0, 1.71 ERA) vs. Ryan O’Sullivan (0-1, 7.04 ERA)
Wednesday 8PM: Cameron Selik (1-1, 4.63) vs. Goldy Simmons (0-0, 0.00 ERA)

The Aztecs are best know this year as the team that Stephen Strasburg pitches for. Strasburg is the hottest college baseball prospect in years. He has struck out 59 batters already this year in only 27.1 innings of work. [Read that again.] The good news, if you are a KU fan, is that the Jayhawks are going to miss Strasburg. Instead the Hawks will face a struggling freshman and a Juco transfer with less than four innings of NCAA work under his belt. San Diego State is not a bad team at all, but the series is set up in such a way that it presents Kansas with a good opportunity to pick up a nice RPI win.

Last year SDS finished second in the Mountain West conference with an overall record of 31-28. They returned only four position starters from that team so, like KU, they are in rebuilding mode.

The Aztecs average 5.8 runs per game on offense. Their team line of .266/.366/.355 shows they rely on small ball, not power - 115 of their 149 hits are singles. They run aggressively, converting 23 of 31 stolen base attempts so far this season. Bottom line here is that San Diego State has been a bit below average on offensive so far this season.

Pitching looks to be their team strength, which bodes well for KU as the Jayhawks will not have to face their top three starters. Their bullpen has performed well so far, in particular their closer Addison Reed (1.08 ERA in 8.1 innings of work) has pitched well. KU will not want to waste early scoring opportunities as it will be very hard to comeback in the late innings. Find full San Diego State statitics here.

I’ll follow the games and post updates. Listen in these next two nights and let the mighty Jayhawks help you unwind from your long day of work or obsessing over basketball minutia.

Lee Ridenhour has given up only two hits through three, unfortunitely one was a lead off triple in the 2nd inning. SDS leads 1-0 in the top of the 4th inning. KU also only has two hits (Heere and Afenir). So far the SDS starter has been surprisingly effective given his statistics coming into the game.

Heere reached on error (E6)
Robby Price SAC bunt. Heere to second.
Buck Afenir walked.
Thompson hits a fly to the warning track. Buck couldn't get back to 1st in time and was doubled off.

Crap.

Thompson is 0-3 now. He has a 23 game hitting streak. The school record is 24.

Ridenhour 7 innings, 3 hits, 1 run, 1/9 BB/K. Outstanding once again.

Unless Selik looks great tomorrow I think we can look for Ridenhour moving into the weekend rotation as soon as Sunday. Just a personal thought.

SDS pulls O’Sullivan and goes to their bullpen. Hopefully the Hawks will see this next guy better.

Top of the 9th – Addison Reed pitching for SDS
Heere line single to LCF. Heere’s second hit of the game.
Robby Price SAC, Heere to 2nd. 1 out.
Afenir K swinging. 2 outs. Sounded like he was hacking.
Thompson HBP. First and second two outs.
Lytle grounds to second. Ball fumbled. E4. Bases loaded. Another break for KU.
Faunce pops to 1st. Game over.

Very disappointing. San Diego State tried to hand deliver this game to the Jayhawks several times tonight and KU would not accept the victory. Terrific start by Ridenhour wasted.

Cameron Selik got the start for KU. He was effective in the first two innings but then gave up four hits and three runs in the third inning. Buck Afenir hit a two run homerun to pull the Hawks to within one run in the top of the 4th. KU is into the San Diego State bullpen already, so hopefully they will continue to score.

Selik still pitching for KU in the bottom of the fourth. I'd like to see him settle down and give the Hawks at least five innings tonight.

Game being broadcast on KLWN AM 1320.

I like to see us win this one by getting the bats going again before Texas. I had thought we could go 2-3 on the road trip but was secretly hoping to be 3-2.

Top of the fifth, Afenir hits a two out single which he stretches out to third on an SDS error. Brian Heere comes home to score. Tie game.

I would have been plenty happy with two wins. Three, you are just gettin' greedy there! These are good teams.

I guess it was just the second. I am imagining things to be worse than they are.
