Baseball season begins in about an hour and 30 minutes. KU vs. Hawaii-Hilo.
Im curious to see what our pitching is going to look like this year. I think the offense will be fine and we should score plenty of runs again. We lost alot of starting picthing and the best closer in our school's history. Another 40 win season would be an outstanding accomplishment IMO. I guess we'll see how it all plays out starting tonight.

The game starts at 11 pm in the central time zone correct? Might have to stay up for that one.

They play every year in Hawaii in February. I was talking to Sean Land at work the other day and he was saying as enjoyable as the weather is there, the flight just sucks....5 hours from LA....

DFQ, I know we lost pitching, but do you know if there are any young guys that might be able to step up? What are our biggest losses from last year, and do we have anybody to replace them? What is the realistic outlook for this years team?

So far the only new pitcher that I know of is Zack Ashwood. He's a transfer from TCU. He's a junior and a lefthander. He's pitching the 1st game against Hawaii-Hilo right now so maybe he's the #1 starter. We lost 4 of our top 5 starters from last year I believe so we have lots to replace. Offense looks pretty much the same except Robby Price (Freshman) taking over at 3B and Erik Morrison moving from 3B to SS. Losing Ryan Batty and Jared Schweitzer (sp) might hurt some but Preston Land (Schweitzer's replacement at 1st was named ro the All-Big 12 team). Murphy has an excellent glove but wont hit much, so that's why he's hitting 9th.

KU's starting lineup tonight was

1. Brock Simpson (Jr-RF)
2. Robby Price (Fr-3B)
3. John Allman (Jr-LF)
4. Preston Land (So-1B)
5. Erik Morrison (Jr-SS)
6. Ryne Price (Jr-2B)
7. Buck Afenir (So-C)
8. Justin Ellrich (So-DH)
9. Kyle Murphy (Sr-CF)

If any one is interested..............

HILO, Hawaii -

Junior Brock Simpson's two-run double in the top of the seventh broke open a tie game and gave the University of Kansas a 4-1 triumph over Hawaii-Hilo Thursday evening at Wong Memorial Stadium.

The win is KU's third-straight season-opening victory, while the Vulcans fall to 0-5 on the season.

Simpson had the big hit in what proved to be the deciding inning. After a botched safety squeeze, it looked as if UHH would survive a leadoff double by junior Ryne Price. However, Simpson drove a 3-1 pitch off the right field fence for a three-base hit that scored pinch runner Nick Faunce and senior Kyle Murphy.

Simpson led the Jayhawks with six triples last season. He later scored on a wild pitch.

The run support was more than enough for junior transfer Zach Ashwood. The 6-foot-4 lefty went six innings, allowing just one unearned run on one hit. He struck out seven and walked three in his KU debut.

Senior relief pitcher Ryotaro Hayakawa worked scoreless innings in the seventh and eighth. While sophomore Paul Smyth survived a leadoff walk to earn the save.

Ryne Price paced the offense, going 2-for-4 with a double and a solo home run to lead off the top of the second for KU's first run of the game. Price hit nine homers in just 84 at-bats last season.

The Vulcans tied the score in the bottom of the inning. After a walk, a passed ball and a fielder's choice, UHH's Ryan Taiariol delivered an RBI-single to right field.

UHH starting pitcher Lars Knepper was saddled with the loss after allowing four runs on four hits over 6 2/3 innings.

The Jayhawks (1-0) will play UHH in a doubleheader Friday at Wong Memorial Stadium beginning at 7 p.m. CST (3 p.m. local time).

Watched gametracker last night, the kids played great,
considering their travel schedule, etc. Hope the rain
stops, and they can enjoy a little sunshine.

I would imagine Hilo is one of the worst teams if not the worst we will play all season. Still, it is difficult to sweep any team in a long series far from home.

I'd say it's between Hilo and Kansas State on who is the worst team. Seriously though these games are pretty much exhibition games that count towards our record.
