51-51-9: The series

This game is shaping up to be so PIMP! The undefeated and 23rd-ranked Missouri Tigers are set to take on a surprising group of Kansas Jayhawks this weekend in a Big 12 battle from Lawrence. Missouri enters this game 4-0 for only the 12th time in the history of the program, as it is fresh off a come-from-behind 41-40 overtime victory against Middle Tennessee State. The last time the team captured victories in its first four games was 1981, and a win Saturday would make the Tigers the seventh team in school history to start 5-0. Considering that their next two games will come against Nebraska at home and Oklahoma on the road, a win in this conference opener is crucial. After all, Missouri hasn't beat Nebraska in Columbia since 1973 and hasn't knocked off Oklahoma in Norman since 1966. As for our Hawks, we suffered a narrow defeat to Big Ten opponent Northwestern in the opener, but the squad has since rebounded to run off three consecutive victories. Most recently, the Jayhawks rolled over Jacksonville State by a score of 41-6 in Lawrence last weekend. A win on Saturday would give them a 4-1 record for the first time since the 1997 season and a four game winning streak for the first time since 1995. Also, Kansas has a chance to snap a five-game skid in Big 12 openers. This border war series, which began in 1891,
is the second-oldest series in Division I-A (behind Minnesota-Wisconsin) and the oldest series west of the Mississippi River. The series is tied 51-51-9, and the Tigers have won the last two matchups. Unfortunately, I think this is the toughest Mizzou squad Kansas has faced under Mangino.

*Teams are averaging 23.3 ppg against Kansas and 407.2 ypg of total offense, and keeping Missouri at or below those numbers will undoubtedly be a tough task. Look at who we've played. Those are atrocious numbers.

*The Jayhawks have surrendered 13 touchdowns to opposing offenses, including eight on the ground. They have allowed opponents to make good on 44 percent of their third down conversion attempts. That is awful.

So let's start with people's predictions!

Did you get banned again for not playing nice with Iowaboy?

At any rate - in answer to your posting. KU 41 - MU 38. This is assuming that KU ends up with the ball last since I think it is going to be a shoot-out all game long. It will most likely come down to turnover ratio - and I do like that our D has been a scoring threat itself all season even though it has given up some big plays as well.

RCJH - GO KU

Yeah, I guess the term "p*cker" is considered profanity, I really don't think so. Poor woodpeckers, I like those birds. Anyway....I agree, will be a shootout. Unfortunatly, I think our D is more porous than theirs. And Brad Smith, like MU or not, s PIMP. I hate this, but:

Mizzou 45
Kansas 24

(darnit!)

I agree with newtongirl, I will be wasted and it will be an awesome day, so it'll all be good!

I think the KU special teams and D needs to step it up big and get us a touchdown or maybe 2. Our secondary is horrible, Smith if he gets time in the pocket can pass all day. Our linebackers and d line need to be really agressive, I like our chance better by keeping Smith on the ground actually. We need to win the toss and take it on O first. No turnovers or dumb mistakes, play sound on offense, make a big play on d or special teams and we win this game.

KU 33
MU 31

What concerns me are the statements about KU's defense needing to generate turnovers and that it needs a touchdown or two from defense/special teams.

Folks, MU has had little if any turnovers. Just hasn't happened and, given KU's present defense "being a work in progress," I'm not counting on any breaks here.

That said, the one thing KU fans can consistently count on are stupid penalties by MU. Remember the 1997 game? Standing under the press box, I mentioned to another fan that they are just like the Raiders. Next play, with MU deep in KU territory, stupid penalty by MU.

What I anticipate seeing are a couple of drive killing penalties by MU. You know, one or two plays where the KU defense apparently gives up another first down on a 3rd and 12, only to see that lovely yellow flag lying on the turf, pushing them back another five or ten yards. If KU gets breaks like that, I smell victory.

Facing the cold hard facts, KU will need breaks like that along with a near flawless performance by the offense in order to secure victory. KU will also need to jump out to a 12 point and above lead.

I think it will happen. KU 31 MU 28

I think playing in Lawrence will be a deciding factor. If the crowd stays in it, I think they get rattled. Also, can't play just two quarters like last week. Must play every down & keep 'em in a hole if we put 'em there.
Absolutely can't play from behind. If we get down by more than 14 points, big trouble.
If we play with the same intensity we showed in the first quarter last week, I can even see a blowout.

KU - 38
MU - 21

When we win this town is gonna blow up. Luckily, I'll be rowdy enough to scare people. Some of my fairy friends are pessimistic and therefore not watching the game or listening on the radio. I'm very disappointed. So I'm gonna go out and blow up with the masses.

Don't worry, the town won't blow. I would like to see a KU 'W' more than anything, but that Brad Smith kid is unreal. We could only hope to cover the spread....even that with our crap D, doesn't look good.

Do you have any hot friends, newtongirl?

But NO goalpost shenanigans. Tipping over their bus will send a much clearer message.

Copper..........I agree......why should KU have to pay for new goalposts for the likes of them??? Tip the damn bus over and leave them to walk home.

I also think that a 14 pt deficit for us is going to be a big problem if they score on us, more than one time in a row...it might rattle our guys into NOT making their way back into it.

I also hope Beck is ON TARGET. We can't afford to miss a single opportunity Sat.
