DJ Eliot as D Coordinator is not the home run hire I was hoping for....
with a solid group of position coaches, Chevis Jackson as Cornerbacks is a start, the defense may be able to take a step forward this year.

Last season, CU gave up 41 to Oregon State and 42 to Arizona. They also averaged giving up 30 PPG in all conference games. Eliot looks like an improvement over Bowen. I will hold off on my opinion until I see who our DL coach is.

Colorado only got blown out in 2 games against Washington State and Utah, so hopefully it was just the offense was the problem

If our offense can move the ball and score this year it will absolutely help the defense...

It looks as though the defenses he coached at Kentucky were much better than the ones at CU. The Colorado numbers could be more a result of the direction of the program than of his coaching ability. Another reason why it is so important to change the culture here.

According to S&P+ Colorado's defense this season ranked (31st) against the run and (72nd) against the pass.

Eliot.
I'm not overwhelmed by this choice. If the hires to this point were entries in a horse race I think it is obvious our new DC would deservably be the highest odds horse in the race.
BUT, he had a good run at Kentucky, and all things considered I would equate Ky conditions as the closest match to Ks as race conditions. Longshots do win, usually about 17-20% of the time. He also seems to have given a good effort in his other stops, so that's a plus, it's just that his other stops may not have presented conditions that played to his greatest strength.
So maybe we'll get lucky and get this "longshot" home. We're due, right?

I like the horse race analogy, and I too am underwhelmed by the choice of DC. But Miles is putting together a team. The horses have to work together, and this may have been part of the consideration.

There's an old saying in horse race handicapping (from the Matchup) that goes: "It isn't how fast a horse runs...it's how a horse runs fast".
Here's hoping the shape of our race suits Eliot's strengths.
He better get busy right out of the gate recruiting some more talent to work with.

Looks like KU just hired Emmet Jones as our new WR coach. Here's he's very well connected in the DFW area and has been the best recruiter at Tech for the past couple years. He definitely sounds like he falls into the monster recruiter category coach Miles said he wants to hire.

From some Tech fans it sounds like he was the TTech version of our coach Hull in terms of recruiting.

Informative article on Brumbaugh. Also worked with Miles at LSU.
