A 5-7 record will not yield a bowl invitation as that is a bowl ineligible record.
Actually you can get a bowl bid with a 5-7 record if there are not any 6-6 teams left. And I think someone about the team's GPA is factored in.

There are 37 games, 40 if you want to count the College Football Playoff teams. There are 119 FBS teasm. 5-7 will get you into a bowl game if the schools academics are up to qualifications. Nebraska went to a bowl with a 5-7 record a year or so ago.

Yes Nebraska and two others went 5-7 and went bowling after 2015 due to lack of 6 winner teams to fill the bowls. So no 5-7 would not get KU bowling this year. Normally.

We won't have to worry about it.

It would probably make his seat marginally less hot.

A bowl appearance would solidify him coming back for 2019, but I don't think he "needs" it to be retained. A 5-7 record and maybe even a 4-8 record with the team looking competent in most of the losses probably gets him another year too IMHO.

If, and it is a HUGE "IF", Beaty pulls off 5 wins, MAYBE, maybe he gets retained but! Only if there are more butts in the stands in game 12 than there were for game 1. If not, Long pulls the plug. Beaty has already burned way too much of his fan support with pipe dreams and homey folksy BS.

Personally, I don't think DB and this staff have it in them to win another game. Even with an emerging "Pooka" (Wasn't Harvey, the 6 foot tall invisible rabbit a Pooka? :D) Beaty is still Beaty!

KU looked SO bad in the Nichols state game with all the stupid mistakes, which to me reflects on coaching. Also the indecision by Beaty on important 3rd downs does not give a good feeling. That said the team looked a lot better against CMU. A lot more disciplined. So who knows.

Overall I think Beaty would be better served if he let his assistances calling ALL the plays, and handling down and distance issues, and everything else.

I agree, him being more of a general manager type HC would probably suit him best. Worked for the slavers HC Pickle. He even said that's what he did after a few years of being their HC and under performing in an interview.

I would be fine with him being a general manager. I have a friend that played under Mangino, and he didn't think much of him as a coach. However he did think Mangino was a first rate administrator.
