That is a surprise. I thought Newman was a show-in as a first rounder.

Newman's draft value is probable the highest it can be. Most likely a second rounder or Europe bound.

Newman

Vick can get better or at max ability

Lagerald Vick
Height: 6-5
Weight: 180
College: Kansas
Classification: Junior
Birthdate: 1/12/1997
2018 Top 100 Rank: 84

Projected Draft Range: 2nd Round to Undrafted

Pros:

Excels at scoring on the move

Adequate scorer off the dribble

Adequate shooter from all over the floor

Adequate playmaker

Fairly good rebounder

Adequate defensive player

Solid athlete

Cons:

Streaky shooter

Does not draw many free throws

His free throw shooting has really tapered off

Can be a bit turnover prone

Can be too passive on offense

Does not always commit to the boards

Can have lapses defensively

Can be too inconsistent in games

Summary:

Lagerald Vick is an athletic, skilled offensive minded combo guard that can shoot and pass the basketball. He did not see much playing time in his freshman year, and had a fairly pedestrian sophomore season.

He had a fairly good junior season, though his at times inconsistent play as well as him not garnering an NBA Draft Combine invite could hurt his draft stock. Still, he is a gifted athlete that could project into a 3 and D type of role at the next level, and he could be a potential second round pick in 2018.

all these talented kids just sort of float through ku for a semester or so and are then, seemingly, lost in the mist of time. it's a shame they don't get to reach their potential in college, somewhere, before heading off to destiny. there's been so many in self's program that simply just fade away. preston. vick is probably next. maybe newman as well.

2018 NBA Draft Project

MALIK NEWMAN 2018 NBA Draft Scouting Report

COLLEGE: KANSAS

HEIGHT: 6’3″

WEIGHT: 190 POUNDS

POSITION: SHOOTING GUARD

CLASS: SOPHOMORE

PROJECTED DRAFT POSITION: LATE FIRST TO PICK NUMBER 40 IN THE SECOND ROUND

SCOUTING REPORT
There was once a time that Malik Newman had the opportunity to play for the University of Kansas Jayhawks, and responded to said opportunity by saying: “no thanks.”

Fate works in mysterious ways, sometimes.

After originally committing to Mississippi State University and remain in his home state to play for head coach Ben Howland, Newman could never quite get on the same page as his well-known coach. One of the most prolific scorers in state history, who was nicknamed “The Machine” because of his ability to score in so many ways, Newman found himself buried on the team’s bench, and trying to get out of Starkville as soon as possible.

Newman’s wish to leave Starkville was eventually granted by the NCAA and Mississippi State, but not without the requisite year where he had to sit out, by rule. Once again, fate tends to work in mysterious ways.

In the eyes of NBA scouts, who watched Newman help guide the University of Jayhawks (the team on which he eventually ended up) to the Final Four, the year away from the game actually helped Newman’s game grow by leaps and bounds.

As opposed to being viewed as an entitled prep star who pouted his way out of a bad situation, scouts now see a polished player who shows a level of sophistication in his shooting, footwork, ball handling, and defense. After the Jayhawks opening round win of the NCAA tournament, Newman averaged over 24 points per game, including an enormous 32-point performance in Kansas’ win over a Duke University team that most people believed would end up as the national champions.

As mentioned, Newman is uniquely gifted with the ability to put the ball through the hoop. He’s a fearless shooter from the outside, with a deadly first step that allows him to drive into the paint at will. When he does drive, he’s strong enough to absorb contact and still finish around the hoop. As a shooter, he knows how to alter his trajectory, or use a combination of head fakes, to get his shot off. Otherwise, he’s very comfortable with the step-back and turnaround jumper as well.

The questions around Newman are very familiar for a player with his skill-set. We can label him a “combo guard,” but we specifically don’t know what he’ll be in the NBA. Right now, he measures between 6’3 and 6’4, which is definitely on the lower end of ideal height for a shooting guard. He’s not someone whom you want to run the offense through, as he’s not someone that shows the balance between scoring and play-making on every occasion down the floor.

Similarly, while he’s a gifted shooter, he’s also prone to streaks of going cold from the field (like any shooter). Given the fact that he’s a “shoot first and ask questions later”-type of player, that can just as much work to a team’s detriment. Plus, with his lack of size, he’s something of a defensive liability as well (he’s already prone to bouts of inconsistency on this end of the floor).

The former 5-star prep star reminds of of NBA veteran Lou Williams. Newman made a great decision transferring to Kansas from Mississippi State. He should now get rewarded by getting drafted among the top 40 picks in the 2018 NBA Draft. We project him to eventually become a very solid back-up at both guard spots who can provide an instant spark with his ability to score the basketball.

Draft Rankings

Billy Preston and Newman late 2nd round status at best. Overseas bound?

A lot of sleeper pick around the same area, a place not desired.

Zhaire Smith, freshman from Texas Tech, projected higher that Newman and Graham because of his height. https://www.cbssports.com/nba/news/2018-...Round material?

Vick mistake

She did not rule out a return to KU — or perhaps another school — though pursuing that possibility was not the reason for pulling out of the draft, she said. And there are no plans right now to check into that option, she indicated. The only option Vick has mentioned to her at this time is the G-League, La La Vick stated.

Self and Vick

“The talk we had at the end of the season would be that he would go somewhere else if he decided to stay in school. That was something we talked about. We kind of agreed on that,” Self told ESPN.

KU Draft

Departing seniors Devonte’ Graham and Svi Mykhailiuk did the most individual workouts for NBA teams in the past couple of weeks and those two, along with early entries Malik Newman and Billy Preston, attended the pre-draft combine in Chicago in mid-May.

DeVonte finally picked 34th to the sorry Hawks. Svi should go soon possibly Malik also. Damn 4 Dukies picked before Graham. Didn't we beat those clowns in the E8 game.

Devonte and Svi get drafted... Billy Preston and Malik Newman go undrafted...

It looks like you should've stayed at KU Preston and Newman!!
I can see why Billy Preston left since the NCAA screwed him out of last season with their indecisiveness on his eligibility. He seemed like a Lester Earl situation. So I can see why he left early. It looks like he should've stuck it out for at least another year though.
I thought Malik leaving was a dumb idea from the moment he decided.
He was amazing during the Big XII and NCAA tournament and one of the main reasons we went to the Final Four. He wasn't well enough known to jump to the NBA though. It took him until the end of the season to get it going that he wasn't a big enough name to jump early. Imagine if he had stayed next year. He would've played all year on ESPN like he played in the NCAA tournament. He would've been on the #1 ranked team. He would've been one of the Naismith POY candidates and people outside of KU would've known him. It seemed like his NBA stock in his own mind was a lot higher than reality. What's the hurry Malik? You could've been one of the leaders next year with a loaded KU team that just went to the Final Four. Now you have to hope some NBA team picks you up as a free agent or go to the Euro-League.
This is why I don't get why kids are in such a hurry to leave. You are only in college for 4 years. Even if you are projected to be a top 10 draft pick. After 4 years on ESPN for every game at KU, you will go as a top 5 pick instead of top 10. You get to be a king on campus vs just another worker bee in the NBA. The millions of dollars will be there after college. The odds of a career ending injury in college are very unlikely. You get to play for fun for 4 years in college. What's the rush!!?? Malik is another prime example of why you shouldn't be in such a hurry to bolt from your college commitment. Or at the very least, do it like Udoka. Test the waters for your draft stock, but then don't sign with an agent. Then come back before the deadline if you aren't a guaranteed first rounder.

Billy Preston, Vick, and Newman making big man on campus poor decisions. Women in all of their lives had negative influences on their over-confidence.
