I have to smile when I keep hearing KU fans fret and stew over “woe is us things” happening in Kansas basketball. This is my 66th season as a Jayhawk fan. We have entered the Hawks 120th season. The early years of my fan hood days have been the worst of KU basketball. My first 31 seasons under Allen (his last 4) - Owns was the worst in KU history. My last 34 + seasons have been the best. The chart just below shows the coaching records of the past 64+ seasons (including the first seven of this season). Under our last three coaches we just keep getting better and better!

Coach - - - - - - - winning - -Season - -Losing - - - Worst - - -Best - - -Total

Allen . . . . . . . . . ..667 . . . . 60 - 30 . . . . 0 . . . . . . 11-10 . . . 19- 6. . . . . 4
Harp . . . . . . . . . ..596 . . . .121- 82 . . . . 3 . . . . . . . 7-18 . . . 23- 3. . . . . 8
Owens. . . . . . . . ..657 . . . .348-182 . . . .4 . . . . . . . 8-18 . . . 27- 3. . . . 19
Brown. . . . . . . . . .754 . . . .135- 44 . . . . 0 . . . . . . 25-11. . . .35- 4. . . . . 5

Self. . . . . . . . . . . .829 . . . .423 - 87 . . . .0 . . . . . . 25-10. . . .37- 3 . . . .14+

The following chart has KU basketball divided into three segments: The 54 seasons before my time. The first 31 seasons of my being a fan and the second 34+ seasons of my being a fan.

54 seasons --- Naismith - Allen. . . Winning % = .697 . . .Total wins = 710
31 seasons ---- Allen - Owens . . . .Winning % = .642 . . .Total wins = 529
34+ seasons --------Brown - Self. . Winning % = .808 . . .Total wins = 976

Sit back and enjoy KU Jayhawk basketball. It’s the best years of our basketball tradition. Throughout the total history of basketball we have been among the among the best. We still are, but better than ever. Plus, the immediate future looks even brighter!

Yes, Phogy, I know, another statistical chart. Gnash your teeth. smile

Jayhawk1952 I never gnash my teeth at this stuff because I LOVE these posts!

Surely we're not the only two statistical nerds on here?.

We are about the same age, so the "eras" you divided the stats into dovetailed perfectly with my memories.

I was a student at KU in the Owens era. He was only two years removed from his first Final Four when I arrived on campus, yet students were already clammoring for him to be replaced. There were "Fire Owens" notices/petitions posted in the Student Union frequently.

Isn't it amazing how statistical success has accelerated as each era changes? As we grow older, the program just keeps getting better, like a fine wine.

We are unfortunate that, despite all our FF appearances, we have "only" three NCAA championships .Just bad luck mostly--i.e. Roy 0 for 4 in FF championships here, yet 3 for 5 at UNC. And Self, with any luck, would have four FF trips and one more title under his belt by now. (I don't subscribe to the "not good enough to get out of the Elite Eight" narrative). Just bad luck.

Luck CAN be a factor. Rick Pitino NEVER lost a Sweet 16 game! (11-0)

So, with any statistical normalcy we probably should have a few more FF trips and a couple more titles.

These stats stick out and are unequaled by any other school in the NCAA--

Since Larry Brown arrived--

977-232 (80.8) winning percentage. Never a losing record in 34 years. Always advanced to March Madness except probation year, And we are averaging 28.7 wins per year.

Yet, I still bemoan that handful of "lost' championships and Final Fours!

Please keep this stuff coming!!! I lap it up like a thirsty dog, in much the same way Phogusher laps up cheap rot gut whiskey.
