The following are general NCAA guidelines to help protect your amateur status:
YOU CANNOT:
1. Accept payment or a promise of payments (e.g., cash, prizes, gifts, or travel)
for participation in your sport.
2. Enter into an agreement of any kind to compete in professional athletics.
You cannot negotiate either a verbal or written professional contract.
3. Request that your name be put on a draft list for professional sports or try
out with a professional sports organization.
4. Play on any professional athletics team.
5. Participate on teams other than those fielded by the University of North
Carolina without receiving permission from your head coach and the
compliance office.
6. Agree to have your picture or name used to promote a commercial product.
7. ACCEPT SUCH THINGS SUCH AS GIFTS, MEALS, LOANS OF CARS, OR MONEY from athletic
interest groups or people within the athletics program at the University.
8. Be represented by an agent or organization to market your athletic skills or
reputation.
9. Receive any benefit that is not available to other students at the University
(Number 9 seems really broad)
The regulations seem pretty clear. You would think this would be apparent to prospective sports players.
I've always wondered about the meal thing when Self has the team over for Thanksgiving dinner.
As long as Billie's car goes, it's OK if as long as he didn't receive it as a gift from someone within the KU athletic program. Correct?

I am no compliance officer, but it is safe to presume that the University is keeping billy p. on the sideline for more than just dinged up tires from a one car accident.

No one outside the athletic department knows what is really going on.

I don't think gifts is restricted to the Athletics Department. It is anyone who can be considered a supporter or a booster. People have gotten dinged for accepting car rides from family friends.

We can speculate all we want. We don't know what is going on.

Whatever. The season rolls on with or without him.

I ain't gonna lose any sleep over it.

We don't know what is going on. Whatever it is, it has kept him out of his first 6 games of his college career. Maybe it's health related. Maybe it's mono.

Or then again maybe it's because he dinged up two tires in a one car accident.

All I am stating if it was a case of his car even slightly leading to a a illegal benefits violation he would not be allowed close to the bench during games. I still believe he will play. And we will need him...Dok is bound to foul out of one game eventually...nomsayin...

He's on the bench for a very specific and very simple reason--

He's tooling around in a very expensive car that appears to not belong to him, nor any other member of his family.

And his explanation apparently doesn't stand up to university scrutiny.

Can you please link us to the official university athletic department statement that backs this up? I must have missed it.

You gonna start in on me again?

I'll go real slow this time, so you can understand--

The car he was driving APPEARS not to belong to him, nor his immediate family.

If he doesn't have a plausible explanation, the NCAA can declare it an impermissible benefit, and he will be ineligible.

From Jesse Newell (KC Star)--

KU freshman forward Billy Preston, who has not played in a regular-season game as KU looks into the financial picture surrounding a vehicle he’s been driving on campus, will make the trip to Miami. But Self sounded as though he’s not expecting Preston to play against Syracuse.

Thus, Self prudently sits him while waiting for the hammer to come down.

Otherwise he'd be playing. He's not sitting because he has hemorrhoids.

Were you able to follow along this time?

I will go even slower so 2004 can understand..if Billy did anything that slightly might cause probation for old KU ....Bill Self would not let him anywhere near the bench during games. 2004 will always be my body bag.

2004 is--and always will be--several moves ahead of both of you.

Neither of you have very much intellectual heft. It's like working a pair of speed bags.

One more time, ever so slowly--

Since Self is not privvy to the investigation he has no basis for banishing Preston from the team nor "anywhere near the bench during games", But he damned sure ain't gonna let him suit up and play.

Comprende amigo?

The only ones who have the details are those investigating. Bill Self is probably second in line in knowledge of what's going on and he isn't going to say much at all. The rest of us, including the LW writers, know very little. At this point, patience is the key, of which most of us have very little.

Thin wristed 2004 knows no more than anyone else. I will bet him a C note that Preston will indeed play again. Doubt if he has a C note to spare. But I will gladly pay up if I am wrong.

Girod's last public defense of Zenger was a day or two before Preston's mishap hit the papers. Preston's mishap absolutely could not happen with the FBI investigation looming.

Something is brewing.

Do you think billy p. will play his first minute as a KANSAS JAYHAWK before MICHHAWK does?

His first minute as a KANSAS JAYHAWK in a non exhibition game, you mean?

Maybe. Maybe not.

Considering exhibition games don't count, his first minute.

If we are counting exhibition, then we have to count MICHHAWK being a ball boy at the alumni game at the 100 Years of KANSAS BASKETBALL celebration weekend. So I guess under your guidelines, MICHHAWK wins.

You just don't know when to let it go, do you?

I'm in a good mood today, so I'm not going slap you around this time. Instead, I'm going to try to help you, because I care about your mental health. That's the kind of guy I am--

Your move.

Back to the topic at hand - since no information has been linked from the compliance office, we don't know what we don't know. The car may well be registered to BP and they are just trying to figure out where the money came from. Since KU has sat him out, there should be no sanctions against the school unless someone associated directly with KU provided the money.

All of the above is speculation and educated guessing, except for the part about us not knowing anything.

I wish somebody would at least leak something so our speculation would at least have some basis.

I feel bad for Billy in all this. He just wants to play basketball.

Good post.

One minor addition--KU could be sanctioned if anybody associated with the univeristy--including boosters--merely let him "borrow" the car.

However, Self has said previously that Preston brought the car with him to KU and filled out paperwork with the compliance office.

Surely by next week this will be resolved.

No, "being a ball boy" is a lot like a Grease Monkey oil changer claiming to be a Nascar driver because he changed the oil in one in the last decade. Your move.
