Beaty had first press conference today. Some notes..

Mentioned that they had fun for a bit at Clinton Lake as a team building exercise. Some guys who hadn't been on any wake boards got up right away. Sign that they have some true athletes.

Mentioned Quiv as part of his opening statements. It seems that his decision making just kept progressively worse. Not a bad kid, but the program has standards that he didn't live up to.

Not often do you have first year guys stand out on the first few days, but they had some of that yesterday and today.

Held out Mathews and Tabor (Surprise) for further medical testing.

From the video it seems as though Bender just has a different feel than any of the other QBs. His throwing motion seems easy and he puts it on every guy in stride. Obviously, this is all without pads, and things change when pads are on, but the more the camp goes on, I think Beaty and Co are wanting Bender to take the reins of the offense and go.

All three QBs looked to have a good ball. (Against air, just to reiterate).

Octavius is healthy enough to wakeboard, apparently.

I think it's going to be Bender...but if our line is mediocre again, we may be forced to play Stanley just for his scrambling

Have heard that Charlot and Sims are our best wide receivers since Briscoe and Meier...

Not saying much considering our previous WRs but still.

I missed this until I read the notebook this morning on the website. But Beaty kind of put Baldwin on blast a little bit. Just because you're from Alabama doesn't mean you're great, even if you think you are, and that he has been on that line, although he has improved.

I'm sure he's using this as a wakeup call for the big fella. I think he wants him to take that RT spot, and he is trying light a fire up his a**

Agree. Beaty said every time a ball came his way, he made a play. In the Spring game, he was going up and attacking balls like no one has since Briscoe. And Sims is likely the best route runner KU has. Meacham is going to want to get the ball in their hands. A LOT. And that will mean nothing but good things for the offense. Those guys are absolute players.

Similar to the discussion about Quiv's attitude potentially making his removal addition by subtraction, I feel that way about Willis and Cozart's QB play.

Stanley was by no means a deity at the quarterback position, but it's crazy when we go from losing 43-7 at Memphis to competing with Iowa State, Kansas State, and Texas and the quarterback (Stanley) was the most notable change.

Slant/Meacham regarding the QB Position, Ben Johnson, and video too:

That's what I like about Stanley. He just seems to have that "it" factor. He's a gamer (Over-used cliché) but he just has that attitude about him. That's where he has the edge over Bender. Bender seems to be calm and collected, but will the guys on the offense adjust well to that after having Stanley for the final 3 games? Time will tell, but I still think Bender will make this offense go. He would have played more at Wazzou if he wasn't behind an NFL caliber QB.

David Beaty lists WR Quan Hampton, OL Andru Tovi,OL Earl Bostick, DE Vaughn Taylor, CB Shakial Taylor among early standouts in camp #kufball

Bostick was a guy that Beaty RAVED about at the season ticket holder signing day event. Thought he could be a first round pick if he put in the work. (his words)

Also great to see Tovi and Shak standing out early on. Shak was injured for the spring game and a bit of spring ball. Tovi got added after that.

Vaughn Taylor was a very late addition to the roster. Not sure if he is a walk-on or scholly player, but a freshman standing out is never a bad thing (also goes for Quan). -- Sounds like Vaughn was a walk-on after being declined at one of the military academies.

This is a bit of a shocker to me:

"Based on the 20-minute window open to reporters from Tuesday's practice, it appears Frazier was working at right tackle with the first-team offensive line, Zach Hannon the second team and Charles Baldwin, wearing No. 58 for the practice instead of his normal number, 72, was with the third team."

He's had a bunch of disciplinary issues all spring and summer. This doesn't surprise me too much. I have a feeling he won't play much during the first game as an even further wakeup call for Baldwin. But I imagine that he has the talent to be the starter although Frazier isn't a bad option.

And leave it up to Keegan for making a big deal about a jersey number in practice. His other one could be ripped or something. That part was pointless by him as his number is still 72 on the official roster.

As the article mentions, Frazier got beat up by Ehambe in the spring game.

Hopefully that's more telling about Ehambe than Frazier.

Bosticks bio says he played DE in the SC vs GA all star game and had 7 tackles, 3 tackles for loss and 3 QB hurries. I wish Beaty and Bowen would move him to DE this season to help with depth.

Bostick played a bit of both in HS (also TE). Given the depth at DE right now, I can understand putting him at OL--especially if they consider him NFL caliber at OT. Obviously not too bad of a decision if he's already standing out at OL.

I don't think DE really needs depth this year. Armstrong, Bean, Ehambe, Long, McCaleb Vaugh Taylor among others. At least 6 quality options for a position that you only need 2 of at a time.

The depth at DE is a mirage. Bean weighs 207 and Vaughn Taylor is listed at 200. Ehambe just had a surgical procedure so we will see how he recovers. Long is a converted QB / LB. McCaleb is 6'2". We need bigger DEs ready for this season when we get into the Big 12 games on the schedule.

Regardless of the "mirage" of depth at DE, would Bostick really fix it? My understanding was he wasn't explosive enough to play DE at a high level. OL or DT was his best fit in college.

"At 260 pounds, Bostick could play either offensive or defensive tackle at Kansas after performing well as a tight end and defensive end in high school."

Bostick stood out at DE in the South Carolina vs Georgia HS all star game. We have enough depth on OL this season but not at DE. Beaty should play him at DE this season and then move him to OL next season after we get all of the new DE recruits.

He stood out so much at DE that Appalachian State, Georgia Southern, and Old Dominion were his other offers (on Rivals, 247). That doesn't sound like a Big 12 level DE to me.

Vaughn is listed at 230lbs. You also got Long at 24lbs., McCaleb at 240lbs., and Ash at 285lbs. all at DE in case Ehambe takes awhile to get back up to speed.

I see Bean as more of a pass rush specialist at the DE spot. He's super athletic and very quick for his size. I also think he'll start out the season between 215lbs. and 220lbs.

Long, despite being only 6'2", may be the next most talented DE behind Armstrong. I think he's gonna have a marked improvement this year. Kid is just as athletic as Dorance if not more so and he's at the same weight as Armstrong now. Kid is a beast.

When I saw both Long and Bean get in games late last year, you could see how raw they both were still. But, you could also see just how much talent and potential both had. They got in on some plays where they had almost no business being able to get in on them but their athleticism allowed them to get there.

While I'd love to have 3 or 4 Dorance type guys running around that ain't happening. That ain't happening in any program actually, but I think we've got enough quality guys to be OK even if Ehambe isn't back up to snuff yet.

I think Long is next in line as "very good to great" DE. Super athletic, can easily play LB. Had the speed and quickness in big class Texas hsfb to outrun guys. Coming out of HS I had a Rivals scout tell me he could play receiver as a freshman at KU. (That's some athleticism.)

Offense should be in the middle of their 2nd cycle on install right now. This offense takes 3 days to install. But after the first cycle is when the offense starts to have different options on routes. And to help the guys further learn the hand signals of Meacham. Because the terminology is all the same, but the signals are all different.

Sounds like he's got some serious speed with the ability to take it to the house on any given play.

I agree. I think we've got 2 All-Conference guys in Sims and Charlot and a bunch of other guys right behind them. Coach Beaty has really be talking up Quan Hampton and Kerr Johnson too. 2 guys who obviously still have to prove it on the field here at KU along with Deron, but that's 3 new guys in addition to the good quality WR's/TE (Johnson, Harrell, Booker, Patrick, etc.) we already knew we had coming back.

If our QB situation turns out as well as it feels like it is going to and the OL is as good as people have been saying from the early returns of fall practice, then our receiving yards should be noticeably improved this year. I know that reads as depending on 2 "ifs", but I don't think our OL being significantly improved is much of an if. I think it's mostly going to depend on the QB play.

But ultimately I'm with you in that I think the most interesting question about our O this year will be to see what all Meacham brings to the table with the weapons we've got on O and how well will that translate to our overall O performance. I really believe if he can make even a modest improvement with our O we should win at least 4 games this year.

I'm both cautiously excited and very curious to see how it all goes this year with the O and Meacham.

Right. But will he actually stay at RB?

I expected him to play more of a role like Kevontae Turpin at TCU or Pierson of previous years, but that sounds like what Quan's role is right now...not to say they can't both do those things.

Beaty mentioned that having Sims as a PR could be a way to get him to NFL faster than being a WR only.. And not saying Sims is like him, but before Antonio Brown became a top NFL WR, he was a kick and punt returner for Central Michigan, on top of being a 1,000 yard receiver during his 3 years for the Chips.

Not overly surprising to read that Wise get reps at DE.

While it would seem crazy since Wise was all conference, if J.J. Holmes is as good as expected and DeeIsaac, Holani, and Dezir are improving, Wise at DE might be an improvement over Ehambe, Bean, etc.

Speaking of fall camp, I noticed KU practiced over at the Chief's indoor facility today or at least that's the impression I got as the team was over there this morning.

Interesting to find out how that worked out. Maybe has something to do with KU day at the K on Friday?

I don't know about that. It was storming pretty decent with lightning and such here this morning--I assumed that's why they were up there.

Yeah, some decent storms came through my place in OP this morning also.

I think I just found out it does have something to do with the KU night at the K. They just announced Dorance is gonna throw out the 1st pitch. Think that's why they practiced in the Chief's facility cause they were out at the Truman Sports Complex in preparation for KU night over there.
