I think someone like Big Frieda might be what Jimbo would prefer.

I recently finished reading Phog Allen: The Father of Basketball Coaching by Blair Kerkhoff, published in 1996.

After having read PHOG The Most Influential Man in Basketball by Scott Johnson, published in 2016, I was afraid that this book might be just a lot of repetition. Yes, there was some, but it was approached in a quite different manner. It dealt more with Allen’s business matters as well as a lot of his controversies he had with others and KU. It gave a lot of insights to Allen that the other book didn’t. It even shared about the basketball game Phog invented, Goal-Hi. It was quite successful for a short time.

I highly recommend reading both books to get a better and fuller understanding of Coach Allen.

Another recommendation is Basketball – Origin and Development by Dr. James Naismith. It was originally published in 1941 and was reprinted in 1996 by William Baker. Naismith tried to put the book together himself. Finally his son, Jack, spent a summer with him taking dictation while Naismith read from scattered essays and notes. They really needed help to put it together in readable form. Jack hired an English professor he knew and paid her to type up the manuscript. She did an excellent job in putting it together and it is a very enjoyable read. Naismith gives many insights as to the development and spread of basketball from its beginnings up to just before his death. He had closely followed the development of his game throughout the world from high school level to college as well as the pros.

My involvement with basketball began about 11 years after Naismith's death. It changed a lot during his lifetime. It has changed considerably during my lifetime.

Another book post before the Italy games pick things up.

What It Means To Be A Jayhawk by Jeff Bollig and Doug Vance, published in 2008. It shares about different players and coaches from various sports. It starts with the beginning, then jumps decade by decade through the 30, 40s, 50s, etc. into The New Millennium. I really enjoyed reading about the stars in the field and track heydays. It brought back a lot of good memories of those I followed when I was a bit younger. It also helps one to realize that we’ve had some really good football players as well. Those younger may think that the 2007 football team was the only good one with good players we’ve ever had. A really enjoyable book.

To go along with this book are two other recommendations: Kansas University Basketball Legends and More Kansas University Basketball Legends by Kenneth N. Johnson, published in 2013 and 2014. These also cover many decades, but only basketball players and coaches. Enjoyable books.

Self has done an incredible job. I looked it up and Kansas has been in 23 Elite Eights since 1939. Bill Self has made 7 of those. Nearly a 1/3 in his short tenure.

Have they had the HOF ceremonies yet? Last I read about it, he had picked Larry Brown to introduce him. He's allowed a couple more, any guesses?

Thanks KB for recognizing Self doing "an incredible job." Some of our KU fans don't seem to want to recognize the value of reaching the Elite Eight. Self, Allen and Brown each won a championship. We coulda, shoulda had at least one more from each of our other three coaches: Harp, Owens and Williams. I have no doubt that each had the best team in college at least once during their tenures. You must be doing some better, glad for that. I think the HOF ceremonies will be in September.
