Good to see he loves his fellow Jayhawks and they are wishing the best for him.

The Weis era is slipping away. When does the Beaty era begin? So many losses that are all Scooters fault.

Well then I guess the depth chart at QB will be #1 Peyton Bender or Carter Stanley, #3 Tyriek Starks or Deondre Ford.

Ford left too. We go from too many qbs. to not enough. 2015 we had to pull a redshirt and play our third choice at qb. The problem with this is it doesn't free up any schollies, or does it?

It frees up a scholarship in the overall 85 that we're allowed, but it doesn't allow us to add more than 25 initial counters in a recruiting class.

We still have four quarterbacks. Perry isn't going to play, but he's still on the roster, IIRC. I imagine they can add a walk-on as needed.

I mean it is what it is. He wasn't going to see the field as a QB. He thinks he can still play QB. Power to him and best of luck. As a fan, I am very confident in Bender, Stanley and even Starks with the new system.

Side note, I've always been high on Starks. I think Starks can be a player similar to what Boykin was for TCU. Crazy athletic, has an cannon for an arm, could be a little turnover prone, but could be a player that is tough to stop.

The question for me is: when does he improve enough to surpass Stanley/Bender?

I don't know if he'll be able to pass Bender. And even with Stanley, not completely sure because Stanley is a tough kid who can make some plays. But I think Starks will be someone we talk about more when he is a JR/SR than right now as a RS FR.

You obviously never saw how he destroyed SEMO and Rhode Island.

I would've loved to have seen him at safety.

How close are we to the 85 limit??

Without knowing which walk-ons will receive scholarships this year, it's difficult to give an exact number.

I believe with our most recent recruiting class and players graduating/leaving we're at about 75-80 scholarship players.

That is just a rough guess though.

He seemed to be afraid of contact. So I highly doubt that safety would have been a good fit for him.

Walkons don't count against the yearly limit, only against the overall total?

Walk-ons count against the 85 once they get a scholarship.

However, if they receive a scholarship before two years in campus, the scholarship will require an initial counter.

The walk on program in general is littered with many people who usually quit without a schollie. Talking about colleges in general. Not a good idea to count on them on the field. Scout team material for practices.

Can the coaches take a schollie away after it has been given? Can they just give the extra schollies to the walk ons and then the next year give them to recruits? Why not hand our all possible schollies?

Well we have had a pretty decent run of walk-ons under this current coaching staff. Which we absolutely needed with our scholarship numbers that Weis left us in.

VMIB, best I can recall a schollie can be awarded on a one year basis, in which case they could award a schollie to a walkon one year, then use that schollie for a recruit the next year.
I should point out, however, the recruit pictured above by Maximus would unquestionably be awarded 4 yr scholly, regardless.

vmlb,

You probably know the team can have 85 scholarships total and can give out a maximum of 25 initial counter scholarships per year.

If say a team has only 75 scholarship players after signing 25 new scholarships(initial counters) for the current year, they then could hand out 10 more scholarships to walkons if those walkons had been in their program for at least 2 years. In this hypothetical, no walkons who had been in their program for less than 2 years could get a scholarship because they would use 1 of the 25 initial counters allowed per year, but this hypothetical team had already used all 25.

So, as long as you don't already have 85 scholarships handed out and a walkon has been in the program for at least 2 years you can put them on scholarship. Or, if the team hadn't handed out all of their 25 initial counters then they could use 1 of those on a scholarship to a walkon who hadn't been in the program for at least 2 years also.

As Appyhawk said, the scholarships handed out to walkons who had been in the program for at least 2 years (i.e. didn't use an initial counter) can be given 1 year scholarships instead of a guaranteed scholarship for every remaining year that player will be on the team. But, since a team can only hand out 25 new scholarships per year, your usual walkon scholarship (been in the program at least 2 years) usually has no impact on the scholarships available any year to be given out.

The only way they would is if a team is at the maximum of 85 scholarships and have less than 25 players graduating or otherwise moving on, so they won't be able to give out their full 25 scholarships permitted for the next year in which case they could not renew the 1 year scholarship they gave a walkon and then use that scholarship for a new recruit. Again, that's only if a team is up against the 85 limit.

Most teams give out any extra scholarships they have to walkons who only have 1 year left in their program as a way of rewarding them for their contribution to their team. Sometimes, teams have a walkon who plays their way into the 2 deep though and they usually give them a scholarship more or less as soon as that happens, even if they hadn't already been in their program for 2 years already.

In KU's case though, since we're still well below the 85 scholarship limit we've given scholarships to both walkons who've played their way into the 2 deep as well as walkons who've been in the program at least 2 years. KU has also been offering recruits who we may otherwise not recruit, a deal where KU will guarantee they'll get a scholarship after 2 years in the program if they meet certain criteria. This is a very new deal that some schools like KU have been in position to offer lately and a few recruits have accepted KU's offer of this sort. People are calling it a 2X3 type offer because they're on the team for 2 years as walkons, then 3 years on scholarship (assuming 1 of these 5 total years is a redshirt year).

Hopefully that cleared up your question as well as didn't horribly confuse anyone!

Thanks. With that info, aren't we getting close to being able to hand out all 85 schollies this year. Don't we have a bunch of walkons who have been in the program for two years? Why not give them out? Can you split the schollies and give a first semester schollie to one walk on and a second semester schollie to another?

We "could" do that, theoretically.

If you "earn" a scholarship one year, I could see it being demotivating to see a scholarship taken away the next year.

We have been giving walk-ons scholarships to a certain extent. However, I imagine we don't just give 10 walk-ons a scholarship from Beaty's first class because you want balance among your 4-5 classes on campus. We probably don't want 30-35 scholarship players in one class because when that class graduates, you have to replace 30-35 scholarship players...which is difficult to do with only 25 to offer. We'd basically always have to keep worthy walk-ons in waiting.

Most teams like to keep a few scholarships open in case an unexpected potential recruit pops up.

Also, I don't think coaches want to just hand out scholarships to walkons who've been in the program for 2 years or more just because they have a scholarship available. Most use them to reward walkons for their contribution to the team or because they've earned it through beating out guys to get in the 2 deep or in other ways.

So, in short most teams usually have 2 to 5 scholarships open and I think KU has about 8 to 10 still open.

It's a way to keep the pressure to win lower by not filling out the roster. It's all the former coach's fault you know!!
