This is for anyone who attended or competed at KU Relays this year. What did you think of the venue?

Also, for anyone who may know, which direction does the discus ring face?

I believe, based on the images I saw, the discuss ring faces with the throwers throwing north.

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to go, but I've heard nothing but good things.

You are correct dgless, I drove out there last weekend and saw first hand. The discus ring faces north as does the javelin runway and the shot ring.

I am extremely disappointed. The discus and javelin are greatly impacted by the wind direction. I am sure the throwing surfaces are top notch, but once again it appears an architect decided on the placement.

A world class facility for runners and jumpers. I wonder did anyone consult throwers about the best direction to throw given the prevailing winds here? It will be extremely rare at this venue to have a record setting discus or javelin throw.

I recall when the discus was thrown at the South East corner of Memorial stadium and one rather quiet young man (Al Oerter) was responsible for erecting a snow fence on the west side of the oval because his throws were bouncing off of the track and giving distance runners something else to think about! I also recall days when Oerter and Neider walked to class together they took up the entire sidewalk! Thank God they were usually smiling!!!

Badair, are you literally recalling these things or are you recalling things that you read?

Just wondering if you are giving away your age.

Have to apologize for my earlier rant about the throwing areas. It appears there are also infield throwing areas in addition to the north areas. They were not visible from the road last spring and I am not privileged to access the stadium.

I think rock chalk park is topnotch...first class...very impressive. I loved how they were able to double up yesterday and get two days worth of track in one day...made for a lot of fast paced action.

So if we have the best facilities in nation, why aren't we winning SHIPS? Or are we? Can someone fill me in on last 30 years of KU track?

The women won the NCAA outdoor national championship in 2013. The men haven't won a national title since 1970 (indoor), 1960 (outdoor) and the last conference title for the men was 1983. There has been steady improvement with the men and the women under Stanley Redwine. since 2001. KU was a track and field powerhouse from the mid 1950's to the early 1970's.

Warm climate year round not what Kansas has for track stars who leave the and head south and stay there for the winters.

Leavenworth kid a few years back left for Arkansas or LSU. Tried out for the Olympics, but not sure how he did.
