Is it possible for him to get some gold glove consideration this year? Hes not a household name at this point, so that hurts him. But it is voted by the players and managers, so I would hope that those guys would understand how good he really is.

Unfortunately, gold gloves are very rarely actually given to the best defensive players at their position it seems like.

Could be a case like Alex Gordon where it took a couple of years for everybody to realize how good he was out in the outfield before he gets serious consideration for a gold glove.

Oftentimes, as Chris said, gold gloves are not given to the best defensive players. But Lorenzo Cain is SO MUCH better than the next best CF on defense, it's ridiculous, if you go by dWAR.

Among 12 qualified AL center fielders, Lorenzo leads the pack with a dWAR of 2.3. The next closest? Jacoby Ellsbury at 1.3. That's a huge margin.

Among those same center fielders, Cain is 2nd with 7 OF assists, 2nd in errors with 1, and 2nd in fielding percentage at .996. He is 2nd in all of those categories to Aaron Hicks, who has a dWAR of .5.

He also leads by a fairly wide margin in range factor. His is 3.11. Next closest? Aaron Hicks at 2.85.

There is absolutely no reason for Cain to be denied the Gold Glove if he keeps up this level of defensive play. He has been fantastic defensively.

If you're looking at defense statistically (i.e. the right way), Salvador Perez should certainly be the favorite for the GG at catcher (though Wieters has also been great) as well. Gordon is in a horse race, but with stellar play the rest of the way, could win out (his track record helps him too).

Here's one that not many people would think of--despite 6 errors, Eric Hosmer is 2nd in dWAR among qualified 1B.

Manny Machado is a virtual lock at 3B. His lead in dWAR is 1.8 over the next closest qualified 3B.

Until his name gets out there a little more, he probably won't win one. Same goes for Salvy.

But I did hear the MLB network cast giving Cain all kinds of props tonight. As well as the Royals defense in general.

ESPN and MLBNet were all over Cain tonight. Can't hurt to get that sort of love on national TV. I think Salvy is getting to be a household name. It helped him out a lot to catch Mo's final all-star appearance. He got mentioned quite a bit around that time. The best baseball minds are realizing what a defensive stud he is. Time will tell if he becomes a stud at the plate. But no judgments can yet be made. The guy has played for three years now, but because of a late call-up and injuries, he has only had 800 plate appearances.

Interesting that the Cardinals are dead last.

Cardinals are not about defense any more. They want to out-slug teams and they can do just that. They have a good lineup every night.

No doubt. It's just crazy that the team that many consider the best in baseball have one of the worst defenses. You have to pitch and hit like crazy to compensate. They sure do.
