Just announced: George Brett is stepping down as hitting coach (replaced by Pedro Grifol) and will return to role as VP of Baseball Operations.

Think Dayton told him that they're packing it in for the season or is he just bored/not committed? Also--he says that it "re-energized" him and he's ready to contribute more to the organization. Thoughts?

Not surprised one bit....everybody I think realized this was just a part-time thing.

He did the organization a favor, and now, he's going back to his normal awesome life schedule.

Thanks George!

The #1 most important thing for him to do was help at Hosmer. And at the risk of giving him too much credit, it sure looks like he did something for him.

Not too shocking. Thought maybe he'd finish the year tho...

His job was to get Hosmer and Moose to come around. 1 for 2 in that regard.

Actually Moustakas and Hosmer both have improved since Brett took over.

Now, the rest of the team.....

not so much.

I'd argue he was 2 for 2.

When Brett took over Moose was hitting .177 with a .543 OPS. Since then Moose has gone 38-141 for a .270 batting average during that span and in turn raising his average up to .225 and his OPS to .630. I know Hosmer's rise has been more apparent but over these past 2 months Moose really has not been playing bad baseball.

I think his main description by Moore was to go in and wake Hosmer and Moose up. George is never shy on words, and will always tells you how he feels and he probably lit a bit of a fire under the 2 corner infielders.

True that. But how do you not go up from .177 and .543?

Regardless, i see what you mean. And Brett provided a much needed spark in the club house.

He wants to sleep till noon, and play golf in the afternoon. Cant say I blame him, he gave more than enough to the baseball fans of KC.

Batting coach is more of a blue collar job, got to be there super early. He mostly didnt like the traveling that was required, but stated he would still help with batting practice when they are at the K.

George came in and did exactly what he said he would do. It was nice for this Royals fan to see number 5 back in the dugout for a short time just for the sake of nostalgia if nothing else.

Did you hear him in the booth during tonight's game? Wouldn't take credit for anything. That guy definitely doesn't mix words. I like that about him.

Yeah, he was tough on himself in the booth. I like the modesty, but he wouldn't even credit himself for changing attitudes a little bit. Said Grifol is great, fantastic, etc.

I always love hearing from George Brett.
