The guy has been electric in his last seven starts, with really only one blemish. He got promoted to AA earlier this week and pitched 6 shutout innings, allowing 3 hits and striking out 7. In fact, in his past 4 starts, he has struck out 37 batters versus just 2 walks.

In those 7 starts, he has a 2.30 ERA, 53 K, 9 BB in 43.0 IP.

After struggling all season, despite continuous praise for his "stuff", he seems to have turned a corner. It will be interesting to watch how he does in AA for the remainder of the season, and possibly even AAA if he dominates in Arkansas.

He is absolutely the Royals' most important pitching prospect at the moment. Good to see him dominating right now. If he fulfills his potential, he has the ability to be a very good #2 starter (or for the Royals, a #1).

In other prospect news, Starling is still struggling big time in Lexington, Yordano Ventura has been up and down since moving to AAA Omaha, and Chris Dwyer has continued to look fairly strong in AAA.

Also, Danny Duffy has looked pretty good rehabbing in Arkansas and Omaha. He says he feels like he has more endurance than ever before and that his arm feels great.

He really did look like he was going to have a great year right before that elbow popped on him. If he comes back and is good in the majors, that would be huge for the Royals.

Love seeing that K/BB ratio and K's per IP.

I'd say he and Ventura are equally important in terms of pitching prospects. Just really need to hit on one of those guys. If Ventura/Zimmer can become a starter next year, along with Duffy (13 Ks the other night) and Shields, you've got yourself a solid staff again.

But I think Zimmer is more likely a solid 3 with the upside to be a 2.

I think that ideally you'd have a rotation with Shields, Zimmer, Duffy, Dwyer, and Guthrie/Paulino/Chen/Mendoza/whoever at some point next year. But that is really hoping that Dwyer is MLB material. He very well may not be all that good. And Zimmer may very well hit another bump in the road and take even more time to get to the majors.

I see Ventura ending up as a hard-throwing bullpen stud, but I would love it if I'm wrong and he makes a career as a starter.

I'll say.

The problem with Dwyer seems to be his control. He's always walked way too many guys, and couple that with the inability to strike guys out at the higher levels of the minors leads me to believe he'll have a very hard time making it in the big leagues as a starter.

Yeah, it looks doubtful at this point that he'll ever be more than a 4th or 5th starter (and that's for the Royals). But this year has certainly been better than much of his previous minor league career. Still, his K/9, BB/9, and K/BB aren't very good.

Exactly. Especially since they have been on a steady decline over his career. The K/9 and K/BB that is...

Kyle Zimmer was absolutely lights out tonight for NW Arkansas. Electric, unhittable.

6.0 IP, 0 ER, 3 H, 1 BB, 12 K

Since getting promoted to AA, this is his stat line:

12.0 IP, 0.00 ERA, 0.67 WHIP, 14.25 K/9, 1.5 BB/9, 9.5 K/BB

Kid has really improved over the course of this season.

Very promising stuff.

He seems like a very likely candidate for the 2014 rotation...which is even more reason to trade Santana.

The future looks bright in the starting rotation past the 2014 season. Ventura, Zimmer, Duffy, Paulino and possibly Wil Smith.

I have little hope for Wil Smith. I think Ventura will be a bullpen guy, ultimately. But that future rotation could really be bolstered by trading Santana now.

You have a better chance of winning the lottery than you do predicting whether or not young pitchers will make it or not.

Just look at three years ago....

Mike Montgomery
John Lamb
Chris Dwyer

This was supposed to be 1-2-3 in the Royals rotation for years and years.

About that....

I'm not going to fault Lamb for his elbow popping. But he probably will never be an effective major leaguer, at least not for a long while. Montgomery has actually been a lot better at Durham this year than he was at Omaha last. But he also looks like a lost cause, if the cause was #1 starter. Dwyer has shown relative improvement this year. Hopefully he gets a shot in the next year. But his peripherals are still pretty ugly.

Young pitching prospects are pretty unpredictable.
