There seems to be this chasm between what is a very knowledgeable fan base (e.g., many posters on royalsreview.com and several here) and the power structure at 1 Royal Way. What seems obvious to many engaged fans (not the casual ones), may not be so evident to those in charge. Dayton clearly needs help in his evaluation of the overall position the Royals. He should have quality folks around him to help with that, but maybe that's not the case.

I've been on the "hot-seat" before where my decisions are noticed by a very large number of people. Your evaluation and decision-making can be affected by knowing your choices have huge impacts. Perhaps Dayton is the type that "locks up" in these situations and that causes him to frequently not do what is best for the organization (even though he thinks he is).

Highly speculative on my part, of course. But I don't think it can hurt to let him (or others near him) know your opinion.

This may be the Pirates' only chance at contention. They have been awful for a long time. If they even inquire about Holland, Dayton needs to sell, sell, sell him. Obviously, you don't get screwed in the process. But for a good return, I don't see why you don't move him. A couple of other contenders could use him as well. I know some people think it's sacrilege to trade within the division, but Detroit could sure use Holland and I bet they'd be willing to give a decent amount for him.

As far as I'm concerned, the Royals, at this moment, need to be sellers. And they need to sell Holland and Santana if they can get good returns on either or both.

Moore should have been on the phone last night with the GM of the Pirates.

If nothing comes out of it, hey, that's fine, it happens.

But if Moore never even picked up the phone (and we'll never know one way or the other), then there's ZERO excuse for it.

None.

Absolutely. I find it hard to believe that he won't, at some point, even get into talks with a couple teams about Holland.

Word is Moore is now willing to "listen" to offers for Santana, but the price is steep.

I'm ok with this....it's a good first step.

Hopefully this leads to a very nice haul in return for trading Santana, because he honestly might be the best available starter in the market now that Garza has been traded.

He IS the best on the market with Garza off of it. I'm ecstatic that he has had two great starts after the break. Only serves to bolster his stock.

I hope that Dayton really plays it like he's saying. Demand a steep price and you'll get a pretty good one, as sparse as the starting pitcher market is. I read that the Sox (Red) might be looking to acquire Santana and Hoch in tandem.

It's foolish to think (looking at you Phog) that you can't get a nice haul for Santana.

Every team in contention wants starting pitching....and Santana is the best available starting pitcher that is on the market.

You can get a very similar haul that the Cubs got for Garza. A power bat that is close to major-league ready, a young pitcher that has shown lots of promise so far, and another young pitcher that has been to the majors, and has been ok at best, but has shown ability in the minors.

Garza also is a FA after the season, so like Santana, there's a definite chance that Texas traded all that for a 2 month rental player.

I don't think that the Royals will get quite as much (assuming he's traded), simply because Santana hasn't shown Garza's remarkable consistency. But I do think that the haul will be pretty similar, and probably even better if a back-end bullpen guy is packaged with him.

He's been fairly consistent this year. His ERA and WHIP is better than his career average. You can get a lot for him because he is arguably the best SP left out there on the market.

I mean over a career. Granted, he'll just be a rental this year. But you feel more confident that a guy like Garza (sub-4 ERA his ENTIRE career except for his rookie year) won't let you down. But you are absolutely right about Santana being the best on the market. That's worth quite a bit.

Of course it's all speculation at this point, but BR put out an article today with some hypothetical trades for Santana. It's pretty short and worth a read, if for no other reason than to learn the names of some potential bargaining chips as the Royals try to deal Santana.

And how about this quote from the article by an anonymous exec in attendance last night, relayed by Jayson Stark:

"I'd take him over Garza. Hit 95-96 a lot. Slider was 85-86. And commanding everything"

I really like that trade listed with Boston.

That's exactly the deal I'd like to see, or of course, something similar.

I really think, if they do move Santana, they need to get atleast one young minor league bat, if not a couple.

I like the Boston deal too. The A's deal is also intriguing.

BUT WAIT. ESPN now gives the Royals OVER a 5% chance of making the playoffs. Call off the trades. Call 'em off.

In all seriousness though, I hope the Royals can find a buyer for a package of Santana/Holland or Santana/Hoch and get back a good OF prospect and a couple good pitching prospects.

Dayton thinks that he can catch Detroit with the schedule coming up.

We're buying.
