Alright, let's break the bad tonight.. Good start.

Interest fading for Royals here relative to society?

Hope not.

There goes Hosmer getting a hit.

Is tonight an aberration or are the bats finally coming alive? Pretty impressive effort at the plate tonight (and the game is only half over). Blanton is pretty bad though.

no way to tell. I do think that Dyson is becoming the clear cut choice instead of Frenchy.

I've been saying as much for the past week or so. Dyson seems to have improved his plate ability. I've heard Goldberg and Hudler talk about him working with Kenny Lofton this past winter. He still needs to become more disciplined and work the count, but he looks miles better than Francoeur.

Dyson's speed in the outfield makes up for any lack of technical ability. Yes, he doesn't have Frenchy's arm. But you can't leave a guy in the lineup who is 30, hits .230, and shows no discipline at the plate. He just swings real hard three times and takes a seat.

And right on cue, Dyson grounds out, but works a 10 pitch AB in doing so.

Still 12 outs to go, but sure like how this one has gone so far. Opposing pitcher makes a huge difference. Spent about an hour this evening calculating the combined ERA and WHIP of the starting pitchers the Royals have faced. Proved my hunch correct. Royals so far have faced above-league-average pitching. Not by a huge margin, but probably enough to be statistically significant. That's bound to even out over time. Tonight will go toward that.

Wonder if Maximus is still over on the dark (Frenchy) side. Just don't see how you can not start Dyson against righties. He's made a substantial positive difference in this game.

Good to see Mendoza rolling so far. He probably will get one more inning. Now that he's made it to the 6th, I think I'd pull him as soon as he gets in trouble (let's say two base runners). There's a lot of value in letting this be (and remain) a confidence boost for him.

I'd like to see the numbers, if you have them on hand.

I imagine more and more people have to be coming to the Dyson camp every night.

As for Mendoza--absolutely. He needs a big confidence boost. He has struggled lately and has been skipped repeatedly this year. If he can just pitch at around a 4.50-5.00 ERA level, I'll be satisfied.

And how about Billy Butler crushing the ball tonight? He has been fantastic.

On a somewhat related note, when do you think the Royals give Chen a chance in the rotation if Mendoza stays at his pre-tonight level?

the numbers (through Sunday's game):

opposing starting pitchers vs. KC:
3.69 ERA
1.23 WHIP

all of MLB:
3.94 ERA
1.30 WHIP

Would be interesting to see a site that breaks down the MLB numbers into starters and relievers to see if the difference isn't just an artifact of starters vs. relievers. I'm sure it exists, but I couldn't find it after searching for a minute or two. Diligent, I am!

Anyway, I may have jumped to a conclusion, but found it interesting at least.

Game update: I would take Mendoza out now (after the Pujols double). No realistic risk of losing the game, but let him file this one away as a great start. No value in jeopardizing that.

The Angels pitching staff is a complete mess right now.

There's a real possibility of a sweep in this series...it's a good time to face the Angels. No Weaver, no Wilson in this series.

Let's go boys.

Mendoza having a rough 6th....defense isn't helping all that much.

Hopefully Hoch gives us a couple of good innings tonight so the bullpen doesn't get used up too much.

Did you happen to get a standard deviation of either statistic? I'd be interested doing a test for statistical significance, albeit a rudimentary one.

Yes, the Royals have a great shot at a sweep. Which is exactly what they need after their last two series.

Hopefully this is the start of something hitting-wise.

Now if Hos and Moose would follow suit....everything would be gravy.

Hoch may have found a niche in the pen. 14.1 IP this year with only 2 ER, 9 H, 3 BB

Good for a 1.26 ERA and a .86 WHIP.

The good news is the Royals are doing what they should be doing as a potential .500 club. Beating the teams that are currently playing bad now and losing to the elite teams. I would feel great about Country Breakfast's hitting night. But that Angels pitcher stunk and is now 0-7. Guthrie will go to 6-0 tonight and the Royals might get a road sweep. The need it after the Yankee debacle.

Should be able to get the bats going tonight. May be a lot of runs with these two starting pitchers. Sure would like to have the over (9).

Think I heard Dyson is starting. That's good.

I know they won't see this, but condolences to Fred White's family. He was one of the best.

My predictions for tonight:

-Davis gets back on track, allows 3 or fewer ER in 6 or more IP.

-Billy continues to hit: 3 hits, 2+ RBIs

-Moose gets at least one XBH

-Dyson continues to look miles better than Francoeur

-Royals hit at least 1 HR

Middle of the 3rd:

-Jury out on Davis, but looking good

-Halfway right on Billy; not yet to 3 hits

-Check on Moose

-Triple Check on Dyson

-Jury out on the HR

2.5/5, if this were baseball I'd have hit .500. GOAT.

In all seriousness though, it was a nice offensive output tonight. Good to see a lot of the lineup contributing. Not good to see Hosmer go without a hit. Starting pitching was bad. Davis looked really bad again. Bullpen was pretty sharp. Glad to see the Royals win a series.

Next 10 are very winnable. Royals need to win all 3 series, or at least 2, to keep pace with Detroit. 3 games @OAK, an under .500 ball club. 3 games @HOU, a historically bad team, and 4 games at home against LAA, a team that they just took a series from and who has underachieved mightily.

DL15 for Dyson. Hopefully not much more than a couple weeks. Will be interesting to see how Lough does though. Technically a better outfielder than Frenchy, with a worse arm and less speed than Dyson. He has been hitting .340 in Omaha though.
