Who will pass Knight?

Davis points out that Huggins is the youngest coach with in-between 500-600 wins, but mentions his recent health troubles. I think Davis missed the point, his ticker isn't the problem...it's the fact he coaches at Silo Tech.

He does offer that Billy Donovan has the best shot, eclipsing the mark in 2033. Billy Self has more wins that Donovan right now, but is 3 years older.

Bill Self (289 wins, 44 years old)
Billy Donovan (271 wins, 41 years old)

If the General truly coaches out his contract through 2011 (and averages around 20 wins a season, which he can do at that program) he'll put enough space between him and Coach K that I believe Coach K won't catch him. Coach K would have to coach to about age 68-70 to then catch him and I don't think coach K wants to do it that long. IMHO

You won't want to hear it...but it will be Roy. Unless he quits at 878 b/c he can't bear to beat the deaner. Hard to beat a coach with a silver spoon.

if Roy continues to average 28 wins a year as he has for the past decade, he'd reach where Knight is now at age 69. no reason to think he won't average 28 at UNC, so it is mainly a question of will he coach for another 13 years. Davis seems to think he won't even go to 700.

i would imagine it'll be the Dook guy here in 5-6 seasons.

Something inside me thinks that he will coach until he gets 878...and then turn over the reins to Coach Holiday...and then at half-time ceremony he'll passionately kiss Dean and 2003 will suddenly make since.

But just curiously, how old is Coach Knight? How old were Dean and Adolf? Sorry just curious...don't feel like doing any research of my own.

Knight is 66 methinks.

Deano, the man from Emporia, Kansas and Topeka High grad....was 66 as well (maybe 65) when he retired in 1997. he is now 75.

Rupp was 70 or 71 (born in 1901, coached from 1930 to 1972).

Knight has a helluva lot more losses (100 or more) than Deano did.

Holladay would be nothing but a Guthridge. He is pushing 60 himself.

the person positioning himself is none other than CB McGrath. He is an assistant coach for UNC....i was suprised to see he is an assistant with Robinson and Holladay, while Haase is the Ronnie Chalmers-esque "Director of Bball operations".

Thanks for the info...I just used coach H to paint a picture. I actually have nothing against any of them. If I was the coach of unc or anywhere and KU called...I'd come home. I'd expect anyone to return to their first love...whether it be a university or the former coach of that university (just kidding)!

Two things to consider. Imagine if Knight had recruited evenly throughout his career....or had cut corners to win. Knight is the greatest floor coach in basketball history, IMHO.

In other words, imagine Bob Knight with Bill Self's recruiting abilities and Bob Huggins' ethics. Scary.

Little Billy Johnson who is 3 years old and lives in Colorado. The guy who will break his record is not currently coaching. IMO.

Little Billy will come close, but you forget that NCAA basketball and human civilization will come crashing down in 2062 due to the invasion of Lipitor the Great from Alpha Centauri, right before Billy Johnson sets the record.
