And to expand on that....

he had a spike in velocity this season (always a huge red flag) and now has tailed off and there are some concerns already that since he hasn't been a pitcher very long, there are some question marks regarding his future as a starter.

There must be something up with Appel...he has to be asking for above slot....there was no reason not to take him at #5 there.

Supposedly we only have $6m for this class.

Wouldn't surprise me if they just ignored the first 4 picks and took their guy.

I think you're probably right CnB.

Hope it works out...I am happy they atleast took a college pitcher.

If that is really the case, then you don't make sacrifices at the top of the draft, you make those at the bottom of the draft. I mean, fukc it, just pass for several rounds to save yourself some money.

Again, I don't think Zimmer is a bad pick, but there seems to be a concept of life that the Royals have NEVER been able to figure out. Perception is Reality, like it or not.

Interesting question...the easy answer is no because there's always a decent chance he never sees the majors.

But I'll say he's up by late-2014, and Dayton should still be here by then.

And if signing him was a money issue, why was Pittsburgh able to take him with roughly the same amount of draft money to spend?

I think the only explanation is that they Royals liked Zimmer more than Appel.

If we are to believe Zimmer about his injury this season being a hamstring issue, not any kind of arm issue, then I might be able to understand the pick.

I still don't like it....but I don't hate it as much as I did an hour ago.

Might make sense if they liked Appel way more than Zimmer, but maybe they thought they'd be mailing in a bunch of later pics to get a guy they don't like any more than Zimmer.
