I am told it was indeed money concerns. He's credibly threatening to go back to school. Figures in the new slotting system that the risk of passing up money as a junior isn't nearly as great as it was before.

So what's he holding out for exactly? I'm confused.

No team to going to over slot for him....it isn't worth it unless it's a can't-miss type guy (Harper, Strasburg).

Na, I understand...I just don't understand, with the new slotting system, why any kid, outside of the select few uber-studs, think some team will go over slot for them?

The kids have zero leverage in draft negotiations in today's MLB system....and I think the agents are pissed off.

Somebody got in this kids ear, and it's going to come back to burn him.

am I wrong in feeling the new draft system HURTS the small market teams more then it helps them?

In the short term, I'd say yes, but in the long term, I'd say no.

Teams like the Royals were taking advantage of over-paying for lower round guys to be able to sign them, but the feeling around baseball was that big-market teams were starting to use this as well....which in the end, just means big-market teams would go and have the advantage again.

Ultimately, I think it's the right move.

But one thing they do need to do is get to work on making an international draft. I know they talked about it, but already, it won't be happening this season.

You are entirely correct. The new draft (and international free agency) system is brutal on small market teams.

Here's the "statement" Appel put out:

"I'm currently concentrating on winning a National Championship and finishing my academic endeavors at Stanford. I will address the possibility of a professional career in due time."

------

Is it just me or is that an incredibly pompous statement?

The #Royals select LHP Colin Rodgers with their 3rd-round pick (100 overall). Rodgers is from Parkview Baptist High in LA

I heard a rumor that Appel wanted 6+ million sign with Houston at #1.

Yeah....good luck with that one kid.

Have any of you seen any of the pitchers, or are you basing your opinion on what writers opinions are?
I have no idea if one of these players is better than the other.
