Assuming, as is normal, our returning players with lots of PT in both 2011-12 and 2012-13 will improve, we could be as good or better at four positions next year.

* As much as I love TT this year, EJ may be better at the point next year.
* Senior Releford could be as good as or better than Junior EJ at the SG.
* Either (i) Freshman McLemore; (ii) RS Freshman White; or (iii) Sr. Young could be as good as Releford at the wing.
* Senior Withey should be better than junior Withey.

If so, we need some combination of Ellis, Traylor, and Young to play fairly-well at the PF.

Our team:

FRONT COURT
Jeff Withey / RS-Sr. / 7-0 / 235
Kevin Young / Sr. / 6-8 / 215
Perry Ellis / Fr. / 6-8 / 220 (Rivals #24)
Jamari Traylor / RS-Fr. / 6-7 / 230

WING
Andrew White / Fr. / 6-6 / 210 (Rivals #56)

GUARD/WING
Travis Releford / RS-Sr. / 6-5 / 207
Ben McLemore / RS-Fr. / 6-5 / 185 (Rivals #34)

GUARDS
Elijah Johnson / Sr. / 6-4 / 195
Naadir Tharpe / So. / 6-0 / 170

ALSO
Justin Wesley / RS-Jr. / 6-8 / 200
Zach Peters / Fr. / 6-9 / 235
Landen Lucas / Fr. / 6-8 / 240
Merv Lindsay / So. / 6-7 / 200

KEYS TO 2013 VICTORY:
1) At least two of the following three players need to be able to play well as a point/shooting guard: Tharpe, McLemore, Releford. At least one of them needs to be able to backup Johnson at the point. If not Tharpe, we’re going to have to go big unless Johnson plays 40 mpg, right?

2) Both Ellis and Traylor need to be a good PF, or Ellis has to be a great freshman PF.

3) White can contribute enough that Releford can play SG when needed.

It would help if McLemore and Traylor have matured well from working on the practice team this year to excel beyond what a typical freshman would--or if Wesley can make a leap somehow.

Releford absolutely cannot play SG. Look for Johnson to start the PG responsibilities and eventually Tharpe will be legit. Rele is locked in at the 3. BMac will be the dagger shooting SG at 6'5''.

I'm sorry, did you miss the OSU game?

He has it in him. Just like Trob can't carry the team because he gets in foul trouble, or Tyshawn can't carry the team because he turns it over.

It's in him. It just needs to be brought out. Rele is a 1000 point scorer .

You think it'll take Tharpe a year to become consistent?

I think Rele can play shooting guard, but he will help out more at the 3.

Tharpe could be key because it looks like a backup for EJ is needed

Yea, at the wing. You know what a SG looks like? It's EJ, someone who can shoot. Rele is a pure wing.

EJ played point some to:

a) Give Tyshawn a break

and,

b) Because Tharpe wasn't ready

EJ is a natural 2.

Dude, Rele can shoot. We recruited him as a shooting guard. He just likes to drive and that's what his leash is at. Give him open reign and he's good to go on the corners.

If Tharpe can run the point well, we are going to be sick.

All I know is that HCBS will have a lot of fun (and maybe a few headaches) "re-tooling" this team for next season...that is, after the pain wears off and TROB decides if he's jumping or not.

I honestly wouldn't be shocked to learn that he decides to stay. Coming so close but no cigar, but knowing you could do it next year is exactly what kept that 2008 UNC team we put a beat down on together to come back and try it in 2009 and they rolled to the championship.

I would think B Mac would play the 2 with Releford staying at the 3. White backing up Releford and Tharpe backing up the 1 and 2 guards. Young starting at the 4 and Withey at the 5. Of course perry could take the starting spot from young. Traylor playing a key back up role also. The other freshman big men might redshirt or get very limited time.

TROB decides if he's jumping or not.

No decision to be made.

Nobody has ever had greater cause or greater opportunity.

Pretty accurate...I'll be surprised if we get another player signed but you're missing Adams on the list of also players.

wishful thinking?

i'm with you though, taking another crack at the post-season, and being the front-runner for POY next season....unless he matches, or exceeds this year though, his stock can't get much higher

sully lost out, imo, by not jumping last year...he was good this year, but his hype kinda died off....it'll be curious to see where he ends up in the first round...

I agree...wishful thinking. Maybe if he didn't have everything going on in his life he could make that decision but he needs the guaranteed money and staying for his senior year isn't guaranteed money.

HCBS has already stated explicitly that one of his goals for the year was to ensure that Thomas didn't have to come back.

Done.
