Dayton traded Betemit to DET for two guys not old enough to drink legally.

Kind of liked what Betemit brought offensively, but since he'll be a free agent at the end of the season, guess KC's not losing that much.

Trade looks like a bit of a wash at this point, but if one of the two dudes makes it to the bigs and is at least marginally serviceable, maybe Dayton comes out ahead on this one.

What I didn't care for was the recall of Aviles to fill the spot on the 40-man. Maybe they'll try to showcase him, but he drives me crazy. His head never seems to be in the game.

Curious how others view the moves.

Betemit needed to be moved and I'm not sure you could have really got much else for him. It's basically a gamble on 2 A ball guys, and I'm okay with that. Since Moose has come up Betemit has hardly seen the field, his value wasn't going to be increasing and had most likely fallen off in the last 6 weeks. Picking up a very young catching and LHP prospect seems about as good as you can expect.

That's about right. Royals were never going to get much for Betemit, nor will they for Chen or whichever of Francouer/Cabrera they move. But realistically, if just one guy they get back in all this year's trades becomes a regular, that's a fantastic return.

Melky and Frenchy are going nowhere.

You absolutely have to spin one of them if you can get anything of value.

I'd love to see Frenchy stay. As good a year as Melky has had, he needs to be shopped aggressively.

Especially as it appears Project 2012 is looking more and more like Project 2013, barring a big-time rebound from Moustakas/Montgomery and/or a splashy free agent or two.

You have three young outfielders who can field, hit and throw runners out. If you are going to win, at some point you have to keep your best players instead of trading for prospects. Now is the time to start standing pat with the starting nine and spend some of Glass' $$$ or trade prospects for pitching.

Lorenzo Cain needs to be the Royals CF on a regular basis by August 1, 2011.

Well, Cabrera can't really field. Not in center, anyway. And he's having--by far--the best year of his career. He's never been this good. He probably will never be again. If you can get god value for him, you have to do it.

He is having the best year of his career but you know he just turned 27. It might be as many pro hitters do they start really hitting their stride about 27 and are good through about 33 or so before the gradual decline starts. Maybe the Royals got him at the right time. Earlier in the year I was on the trade Frenchie and Melky for prospects bandwagon but given the outfield assists and hitting they are doing now I am not so sure a late 20's (in age) OF with a now hitting young Gordon is something to be so quick to move.
Melky and Frenchie have not made Dayton's decision an easy one.

That's not really how aging tends to work.

Career year, 27...the time is right.
