Its mid-June and the Royals are 13 1/2 games out of first. It is not too late to hope somehow they can pull themselves into contention. The Yankees won 9 straight and are now back within 7 games.

The way the Royals are playing now, I can see some hope.

They could do what you are talking if they didnt play in the toughest division in baseball and or they played national league teams half the time. (7-3 against national league teams this year)

Then there hasnt been any sports in the summer for you for many a year. I used to love the Royals when I lived out there, maybe even more than Jayhawk Bball, but with the big city market teams ruling the game I became disenchanted with baseball. But I am glad the Royals are playing decent now and the way the KC area taxpayers are pumping money into Kaufman Stadium you wont have to worry about them moving away anytime soon. Man after those improvements that stadium will be sweet but still dont know if it can match the Ted right up the road from me. Believe or not I dont care for the Braves either......

I spent some time in Atlanta. The Braves are still a distant third to NASCAR and SEC football. Surprisingly, after all the Braves success and tradition, Atlanta is not a very good baseball town.

No denying that, its a terrible baseball town, also a terrible NFL town. Even with the Falcons being more popular than ever with the arrival of Vick, going to a game at the Dome sucks, I have been to two of them and its like a large hip hop concert. Nothing like the Chiefs. The problem with Atlanta is most of the 5 million in the greater metro area isnt from here. So they could care less about the local teams. Most true Braves fans are from the olden days of Joe Horner and Dale Murphy.

What you get at the stadium these days are mostly yuppish Mid Towners just getting plastered at the Chop House or 755 Club(that place is super nice by the way). I still pay attention to the Royals, its sad that a once great team plays with such mediocrity these past 10-15 years. Hopefully this new GM and owner can turn them around....

The 755 club will only be obsolete when 755 is broken in legit fashion. Any number Bonds has is a fraud.

Them having equal amount of wins as Chicago is enough for me.

Gordon is now batting .215. If he can somehow get to .300, it would be terrific. Bannister has pitched well although yesterday left a lot to be desired, win or not. Odalis Perez needs to go away. Sweeney needs to go away. They are headed the right way though.

If only the Royals were in the National League. Did anyone see the article in the KC Star? They would have the best record in the NL if they could stretch their record to match their NL record.

I guess they had the opportunity 10 years ago to move and declined.

Unfortunatly you are right. The organization appears to be showing signs of life, and hopefully the economics of baseball will even out enough for the Royals to compete for more than just a .500 record, but a legit chance at contending.

10-8 last year, 10-5 in last 15 games. That means in the Royals' last 28 interleague games, they are 19-9.

Just proves how weak the NL is right now. But these things are cyclical.

I think he's being EXTREMELY sarcastic.

Nice win tonight, though. 3-2 in 11 innings over the hot Seattle Mariners. More great pitching from Meche and the bullpen, and David DeJesus was hot. Two doubles, a home run, all three runs, and a line out that led to Richie Sexson leaving the game.

Hard to say. There are going to be more changes by Dayton Moore with more veterans being traded/released. Obviously Sweeney will be gone, as will Reggie Sanders and probably Emil Brown. Others who might go are Odalis Perez and Octavio Dotel. I can see this team winning 65-70 games this year and 70-75 next year. I think, right now, 2009 or 2010 could be the first bona fide chances for the Royals to contend. More starting pitching is needed, but that bullpen right now has to be among the best in baseball.

Grienke is bringing it, that's for sure. Your 75 prediction could be right on as long as management continues to loosen its pocketbooks jusssst a little bit more...some wise decisions down the line and the K could be rocking. My bet is on some serious .500 ball for the next few years. Could be worse

Think about this...the Royals are currently spending $27 million (that's over 40% of their total payroll) on five players WHO AREN'T PLAYING (Sweeney, Grudzielanek, Sanders, Brown, Elarton). Take those five off the roster, redistribute that money to two or three real players in free agency, and suddenly this is a much better team with exactly the same payroll.

Its nice to see some people like yourself supporting the Royals. When I lived in the area I didnt miss a game on tv,radio, or going to them. I just would like to see them play .500 ball again someday, that would be nice. And Kaufmann Stadium is going to be sweet after the renovations. Maybe that will be done in time when they become a good or great team again. We can hope,right....

Grud is worth keeping unless they can find a real solid prospect. Sweeney is only around because they'd have to pay him this year whether he's on the roster or not. I wouldn't expect to see Sanders around next year either, probably Brown as well.

Yeah sure, The Yankees HAVE tanked it pretty good so far. We know the whole story on that. RC will be fine. He's findin' his mustard right now and I think things will shift into Rocket mode for "2nd half Rodge". Still have to get the others goin. Rivera is still dominate. His location and speed is still there and that cutter he throws is something fierce. Too bad there hasnt been many chances at saving games so far. Pettitte will need to get right when called on. He had a tough outing last go and will look to capitalize on the humiliation next call. Run support always helps a pitchers confidence. In 5 games started the Yankees have scored a total of 8 runs when Clemens has started. Unnacceptable.

Three....
Royalfan needs to see take a timeout and do some self evaluating. Think about what your team has done to you for the last how many years? After Darryl Motley went yard and caught the last out the only excitement that has came out of Royalfan was Bo Jackson. Then who? Danny Tartabull? Royals will be a farm team unless they can prove they are winners. Period.

23 years?

No playoffs?

When was their last winning record anyways?

Comparing their season to the Yankees woes this year is amusing.

2003, 83-79.

As you may know, Royals fans are aware of our franchise's ineptness since 1994. When fans of the big-spenders start flapping their mouths, it gets kind of irritating. It's like a Texas football fan talking smack on Baylor.

How many Yankees cheat on their wives? We know A-Rod does. Damon is among the scum of society. Who else? Take those bastards.

And if you want any players, take a long hard look at the Royals' old farts. They're probably about the only ones up for trade right now. You're not getting a little worried that the Royals' future actually looks brighter are you?

Careful, 'capper...JHAWX75 honestly believes money isn't the issue here. Apparently, he thinks the Yankees organization is superior top-to-bottom regardless of the inflated payroll numbers.

I know, it's hilarious...

But, considering he wears pinstriped pajamas what should we expect?

You're probably too young to remember, but before the economics of baseball slanted to the Yankees favor, the have several long stretchs when they were mediocre at best.
I have no problem admitting the Yankees are the dominate franchise of our time, I do have a problem when Yankees fans say payroll has nothing to do with it.

Have the Royals been badly managed in recent years? Yes. That's not really up for dispute. But is it realistic to assume that good management alone can compete with the financial resources the Yankees' have at their disposal? Hell, no, and to presume that the Yankees' enormous financial advantage isn't a factor worth discussing is just plain stupid.

USA Today's team payroll database goes back to 1988. Here are the average payrolls and win totals for the Royals and Yankees from 1988 through the 1994 strike:

Royals - 79 wins, $27.7 million
Yankees - 76 wins, $30.0 million

Hmmmm, similar payrolls, similar win totals. Now let's look at the same figures for 1995-2006:

Royals - 68 wins, $33.7 million
Yankees - 97 wins, $115.0 million

Yeah, sure, the money has nothing to do with the Yankees' success. Keep telling yourself that story and maybe you'll convince yourself it's true.

Money isn't all that's wrong with the Royals and Yankees. Look at Florida and Minnesota and Oakland. But realistically, those franchises rarely have a shot to win a World Series (Florida being the exception). It's about having the right people in the front office. I hope Kansas City hit a home run with Dayton Moore. They are obviously better this year and it looks like they are headed in the right direction finally.

I'm going to two Royals/Yankees games later this month. Funny thing is, in 2003 when the two met in August (Royals won series 2-1) in Kansas City, both teams were in a pennant race. In 2007, neither team will be. Kansas City has a legit excuse. New York does not.

Some teams might look down on this, but it makes me happy. The Royals are 19-13 since June 10th. Now they are 42-53. That's a .44 win %, keep that pace up and we win 71 games. They have been playing much better and should improve on the .44 IMHO, anything under 90 losses will be a successful season and gives us momentum going into 2008.

If they hit 70 wins this year, playing mostly young talent as they should, it should be considered a wild success. Their hot streak actually started about a month sooner. Since May 13th they're 31-27. Erase their horrific 10-21 start they've been a .500 team ever since, a span covering 64 games, more than two-thirds of the season. And that's a legit .500 - they've outscored their opponents 320-311 in those 64 games. If they finish the season at the same pace as their last 64 games, they'll have 75 or 76 wins, and I'll definitely be renewing my season tickets if that happens.

Isnt that what I said more or less. Dont really care about baseball that much. Live 25 miles from Turner Field and havent seen a Braves game yet this year. Usually only go to 2-3 a year tops. I hope the Royals continue to do well, I was all about them back in the late 70s and 80s,even went to old Muni back in the day............

Baseball in KC matters again, and I'm not talking about the Tbones (but I like going to their games too)! Damn, it's fun!

I wonder how many BW "Yankee fans" will be there this week? Saw some broad wearing a Yankee shirt at the Tbones game last night and I wanted to ask her who the skipper before Joe Torre was and if she remembered Matt Nokes.

Well Royals just won their last 4 and swept the Rangers. Now 13 1/2 games out. A strong run could put them in a race. A real strong run.

Over the last 10 games the Royals have the best record in the division.

They are 6-3 in their last nine series, including @ DET, @ BOS, vs. SEA, @ ANA...pretty impressive.

I think the true test of their play right now is sitting right in front of them, though.

4 @ MIN
3 @ NYY

If they win this road trip, then I'll be impressed.

The way they have been playing since early June, they could be within 10 of .500 this year. If not, next year they will be over.

Going 5-4 at Detroit, Boston and Cleveland didn't impress you? All three would be in the playoffs today.

Of course it impressed me...that's why I pointed out that they won two of those series.

Look, the Royals have had one annoying tendency this season...following up a good stretch with a 4- or 5-game losing streak.

I've been watching them very closely and the team on the field right now isn't the same team they had out there in May. This team is capable of ripping off a .600+ month-long streak and I want to see them do it more than anyone.

If the starters can keep it close, the bullpen stays strong and these young hitters continue to play clutch baseball they can win their third straight road trip.

That's impressive any way you look at it.

I have one fear - the bullpen wearing out in mid-August. If it can hold on until September, 75 wins isn't out of the realm of possiblity.
