LJW mentioned today:

"If Webb and true freshman running back James Sims continue at the pace theyre on, they will become just the third freshman duo in KU history to lead the Jayhawks in passing and rushing in a single season.

The last freshman tandem to lead a KU team in passing and rushing in the same season came in 1980, when Frank Seurer threw for 797 yards and Kerwin Bell ran for 1,114."

This date in 1980 Diana Ross was #1 on the national Billboard charts, Queen was threatening, and Nebraska thought their new freshman quarterback was a recruiting coup. Frank Seurer, Kerwin Bell, and a third recruit, all from the same Los Angeles high school, were considered an amazing recruiting coup for KU. Who was the third recruit? Does Bill Malavasi ring a bell, and his dad was an NFL coach? I can't remember Bill Malavasi. I do remember Dino Bell, who followed Kerwin to KU. I remember Lawrence being in a buzz in 1980 because these three highly touted southern California kids chose us. Someone with a better memory about recruit #3, please respond.

The Alexander twins were from Topeka. I think Malavasi is correct. His dad's name was Ray Malavasi. I don't remember Bill amounting to much at KU. Might have been hurt.

You will need someone near 50 to remember back than. I knew Suerer and Norseth in college. Paul Forseyth who went on to play for the Patriots?

Suerer, Bell and Bill Malavasi all came from Edison High in Huntington Beach, CA. They were recruited by John Hadl.
Their recruitment ended up in probation for KU and Hadl being banned from the campus for a time. Edison is still a football powerhouse in the CIF. If you have the DirecTV Sports package you can watch them play during the playoffs.

Now that would be about as useful as tits on a boar.

So the story goes, John Hadl showed Frank Seurer, a little kid at a California football camp, how to hold a football. This was probably the time when John Hadl was quarterback for the San Diego Chargers? And, years later when it came time for the boy to chose a school, he remembered John Hadl, and John was back at KU at that time. The kid chose KU because John Hadl had showed him how to hold a football.

I see in 1980 with a freshmen quarterback and running back, Don Fambrough's team was 4 wins, 5 losses, and 2 ties.

Who was Paul Forseyth, 1985hawk? You got me, I'm stumped!

Actually, I think Hadl taught him how to hold cash as well.

Well at least I got the being over 40 part correct...

Ray Malavasi did coach the Rams to their first super bowl, where they lost to the steelers.

Frank Seuer used to drive a new green Porsche 911 around Lawrence. Also had a friend who was a bookie in Manhatten back in the day, and he swore up and down, inside and out that Seuer was making big money bets with him on KU games, always picking KU NOT to cover.
