I think just responding to an asinine post more than anything.

I will say gutter, the women's championship game was a hell of a lot more entertaining than the men's game this year. I hope that Bonnie can get a team playing close to the level of play shown in that game. I don't get to many of the women's games, but the level the ladies play at is something that I can more easily relate to playing myself since I could only dunk in the open court and garnered my playing time by hitting the occassional shot on the wing and bustin' my @ss on d. I enjoy watching the men's game more, but the purest in me enjoys catching the occasional women's game.

I hope I detect sarcasm here tm, cause I really hate watching NBA ball. The only time I do watch is the fourth quarter of the games during the championship series (if there isn't anything better on the tube.)

you guys need to calm down. i was clearly able to achieve success though, as people are now posting on the womens board. i just found it sad that no one had posted in roughly three days. i would agree that the women's game was much better than the men's (title game that is). i completely agree on the NBA comment as well. i enjoy an occasional bulls game, but the most NBA i watch is on classic.

I'll go ahead and toss a little fuel onto the fire.

I have a fair bit of experience coaching girls COMPETITIVE youth athletics. I have been the coach of a girls SELECT TRAVEL SOCCER TEAM for the past 6 seasons. We are currently
a u-14 team. We compete in the 1st division(which means we are pretty good). I have taken multiple training classes that were specific to coaching girls. One of the first things they said in each and every class was that you CANNOT approach teaching girls the same way you would the boys. I can tell you that they are 100% spot on with that statement.

The girls do not approach their athletics the same way boys do. The girls parents do not approach their daughters athletics the same way they would their sons. That can be extremely frustrating.

There is a damn good reason that girls athletics is NOT taken as seriously as boys. Until the girls change their mindset, this will not change. Until the parents change their mindset, this will not change. There is no way that the publics mentality will change regarding girls athletics until the participants change theirs.

This isn't much different from educators finally understanding that girls learn differently than boys as well.

As a father of three girls, who play sports, I can tell you that everything I've read and seen supports MICH's point.

LMAO.

I can relate, MICH. Not to the same degree...a whole team...wow.

But, I can definitely confirm, through my own experiences, that it's a different mentality and it takes some getting used to for a male coach/father to deal with.

I agree with basically everything that was said in the post about not being taken as seriously as boys sports, but I think it's very pointless to be taking up the argument on the WOMEN'S Basketball board. This is the first board on this site that I posted on, and when I started posting, everyone over here seemed to be strong supporters of women's sports, but I guess the off-season brings the women bashers back to the board.

So dealing in reality means you have a 1950's mentality?
Since you ignored my previous question, try this one:

Would you like to compare merchandise sales, TV appearances, and TV ratings for KU MBB and KSU WBB?

I'm with 'nation on this one, '61. This isn't about our women's team, but about women's basketball overall. It's impossible to argue that it's as popular as the men's game and when MICH gave a legitimate reason for that, tmcats jumped all over him.

Sorry, but that's stupid. That is running down the KU women's team and every other women's team and everybody who has a daughter or sister or niece or mother who played the game.

I've bit my tongue so far because of the identity of the person keeping this thread going, but I can't resist any longer if the KU fans are going to be stupid, too. Just because women have different values and get different rewards (team achievement over personal achievement) than their brothers doesn't mean female athletes aren't "serious" or "dedicated" or "committed" or any other such word.

If instead Mich meant that it's mostly men who WATCH sports, that most non-participant women don't put a priority on WATCHING sports, that most men don't enjoy watching women's sports unless they know someone playing or are exposing their female relatives to the game, if he in fact meant women's sports aren't as "popular", then he's got an arguable point. Sorry tmcats. But women athletes "getting serious" won't make one whit of difference to making it more popular.

The girls do not approach their athletics the same way boys do. The girls parents do not approach their daughters athletics the same way they would their sons. That can be extremely frustrating.

I'm going to ignore the rest of your post, because I just really only wanted to say something about this part.

You CAN coach boys and girl's the same way. I spent 4 years in high school on the boy's wrestling team, and fared just fine, if not better then some of my male teammates. Also, my family approached my sport just like my team mates parents.

It's not always a matter of gender, sometimes it's the coach, or maybe even just the sport. Not to say that you're a bad coach, because I've never seen you, but to say that you have to coach females completely differently is incorrect.

I've got to call shenanigans on this one. First, nobody said "completely different". Second, it's widely acknowledged in national coaching clinics, educational circles and most scientific studies that girls learn and participate differently than boys. That's not one guy's opinion.

When I posted JBo's BB camps last summer he decided to do both boys and girls camps. He told me thru a email that the little girls did not want to listen at all and not interested @ all.

All I said was that not all girls participate a certain way. I didn't deny that weren't some like that. I just stated that it was possible.

Just because it "can" be done (in rare instances) doesn't mean it's the norm. In fact, the issues MICH laid out are far more common than exceptions to the rules where girls learn/participate exactly like boys.

This is hardly a slam on girls, either. The issue is most commonly described to coaches as being one (paraphrase alert) where girls must understand WHY they are doing something (drills, practicing specific skills, etc) before they will fully engage. Boys, in their own mindless way, will not hesitate to run down and touch the end line and run back without giving two flips as to the 'why'.

This is a little off topic, but some time ago they showed a documentary on public tv about an African American male coach of a girls high school basketball team in Arizona. The athletes were mostly Navajo raised on the Navajo reservation.

The real story was how the coach and the girls learned to navigate their cultural and gender differences. Everybody wanted the same thing -- to win and to be respected -- it just took a while to get there, which made for compelling television. One of things that made a difference was that one of the assistant coaches was a Navajo woman and she made it her business to "interpret" between the girls and the coach. The team ended up being very successful.

It rivals Hoosiers as a great high school David and Goliath basketball movie.

If I can find the name of the movie, I will post it.

But that's what I'm saying, it's not as rare as you'd like to think. Go to a high school today and watch some of the girl's practices, and you'd be surprised.

And I realized that it's not an attack on females or anything of the sort... I'm just pointing out that from my entire athletic experience, and seeing how my male team members acted versus my female team members, that there are quite a few girls that participated like boys and vice versa. I admit there is a general difference in approach by the sexes... I just believe that, for the most part, its more of an individual thing.

You think I have a preference or pre-determined outcome I'd like to see? I am the father of three girls, hilly. I see plenty of this firsthand and, like MICH, have to deal with these issues daily.

I didn't say that. Nor did I even mean it. I think you're over thinking my statements. I never questioned your experience, only offered my own opinion based on my own experiences.

ksu wbb is just as popular across this state as any men's team including the kwho squad. get over yourselves and your 1950's mentality. this is the 21st century. chamberlain is dead.

TM, I used to think you were a smart, intelligent person. After that post, I have to say I'm wrong.

Do the KSU women sell out every game and get 15,000 people for exhibition games against in-state, Division II schools?

Do the KSU women play on TV every game to meet the demand of the fans around the state?

Do the KSU women have fans who drive 12 hours round trip for a weeknight game? I have a friend who does 2-3 times a year for the KU men.

Be realistic TM. I live in central Kansas. I have seen and met several KSU and future KSU players including Shalee Lehning, Marlies Gipson and Ashley Sweat. Good players, good girls. It's easy to understand why they are popular. HCDP has done a fabulous job getting the small-town Kansans and using them to popularize KSU women's basketball.

But ask 100 random Kansans the following questions:

1. Would you rather watch the KU men on TV against a small D-I team or would you rather watch the KSU women play Colorado on TV?

2. Would you rather attend a KU vs. Northern Colorado game at Allen Fieldhouse or a KSU women's game against Texas Tech at Bramlage?

I'd say at least 85 would take KU in both instances.

yeah, even i have to agree that is a ridiculous statement. ku basketball has an enormous following, enormous. k-state wbb has been a quasi big deal if that for the last 2 or 3 years. get real.

Ok I'll try and help revive this post.

I think a big majority of the problem is the women don't support women's basketball. There are by far a larger number of women who are fans of men's college basketball than women's.

Ladies, you have to start supporting each other. Once you get a solid female fan base, the men will then follow.
