Anyone seen it yet?
I just got back from a showing and thought it was incredible. I was fairly speechless coming out of the theatre. I was totally sucked into what was going on in the movie. I saw it in 3d/IMAX and would HIGHLY suggest doing the same if you are going to see it. In fact i can't imagine seeing it not in the 3D/IMAX form.

I watched it opening night at Southwind 12 in Lawrence last night. Wasn't an IMAX but the 3D was still good. Really was visually stunning. I can only imagine how much better it would be in an IMAX theater. My kids got big time charge out of it. It's definitely a film worth seeing. Pretty amazing eye candy.

Does it have a good story line, or is it all special effects?

the story line was better than i thought it would be. It wasnt great but it was pretty good. The special effects are the strongest part of the movie, because they totally get you lost in this new world.

I took my 10 YO to see it last night. My first ever 3D movie. Pretty incredible stuff. Not so much a good story, nothing too original.

There were lots of liberal allegories going on. Did Al Gore produce this movie?

I was actually a little disturbed by the guy joining the "terrorists" and the when the "terrorists" are attacking hearing that Middle Eastern high pitched LALALALALAALAL. I'm sure there's a name for it just not sure what it was. You could easily substitute oil for whatever mineral that was and interject the big bad US is killing off Muslims to get to their oil. Only to have the Islamists band together to kill the great Satan.

That was a small part of the whole movie, but I didn't care for it, and I thought it was unnecessary. Other than that, really cool movie.

PG 13
I took my 10 year old. There's a couple of bad words. Segourny Weaver smokes (OMG) and there's a mating scene with no alien nudity.

We invited my daughter's friend. Her parents said no because of the pg 13. I honestly don't understand how it got that rating.
Maybe the big battle scene at the end but there's no green blood or anything.

I took my kids. 7yr old son, 5 and 12 yr old daughters... they all loved it. My 5yr girl feel asleep though near the end cuz it was late. Depends in the kids of course, but there wasn't really anything in that movie made me regret later taking my kids. I agree with the poster who wondered why it was rated PG-13. Other than some of the fight scenes, it was pretty tame.

Visually stunning. Plot is very thin and a rip off of other movies. I'm thinking a combination of Dances With Wolves and Titanic. It's worth going to see just for how stunning it is visually but that's about it.

I didn't think the message in the story was preachy at all either. Every story needs a villain, and this villain just happened to be angry natural resource Americans.
Avatar = Pocahontas + Titanic + Fern Gully.

I hated it. The visuals are awesome but the plot sucks so bad. It would have been a much better movie if they only showed the fighting. I asked myself so many times if it would ever end. Just the whole 9 foot tall blue aliens that connect to pterodactyl-dragons and rhino-horses through a pony tail and control them with their mind irks me. Also, would a bunch of alien people with bows and arrows and the 4 whole kinds of animals they have on their planet would beat the trained skillguys with things that explode good, huge helicopters, and robo-suits with gigantic weapons attached to them?

With all due respect, and by that, I mean you are an idiot, I completely disagree TWest. I thought that the plot was surprisingly above average. The movie is something completely new. The casting of characters was very well done, and overall, I thought it was one of the best movies of the year (2009, not 2010).

Point taken. But despite the length, it was a fantastic movie. You might remember another James Cameron movie that was increasingly long, but fantastic. It won a helluva lot of awards. The movie: Titanic.

Concept not new. It was a mash up of Dances with Wolves and Fern Gully. The main character wasn't likable at all. Visuals were stunning though. Cameron's world was well imagined.

Couple of questions with some spoilers. The first one bugged me the most. Why if you have the ability to travel through space with high tech weaponry would you manually push a bunch of explosives out of the loading dock? I know that they said the mountains or whatever were messing up the instruments but really, you are going to have a bunch of soldiers just heave the bomb put together with some straps just at the right time? And you'll leave the dock open well before you arrive at the drop zone so that the aliens you KNOW have the ability to fly to counter your plan? You gotta have something better than that. Come on.

And why did those machine like robots not have weapons built into the machine instead of having to carry them around? If you build a tank, you aren't going to have arms that hold weapons--you just build the weapons on the tank. And a huge knife that you can hold in the machine? Retractable bayonet? Nope. They just build huge knives for these robots.

It's a cartoon. Completely different. In this movie they are still trying to create a world with somewhat plausible scenarios. Gravity works. The world is still based in science. There are humans that are still just humans...but with explained technological advancements.

Actually "fancy cartoon" is a good way to describe it. It's a beautiful piece of animation with some Michael Bay Lite characters saying stupid sht during the live action sequences. Take out the human actors and you're left with an amazing 90 minute moving work of 3-D art. But it's still pretty good even with the Injuns v. Empire plot. I'd recommend it to everybody I know.

P.S. Phill Kline didn't like it, and he wants you to know why.

I quit reading after he couldn't get the directors name right.

I thought Avatar was one of the best theater movies I have ever seen. I would give the plot a B+ and the special effects were absolutely incredible. I went to an IMAX down here in Charlotte and not only was the show sold out about 30 minutes before the showing but people were in line hours before the show.

After leaving the theater I couldn't even think about the world I lived in that's how good the film was. You are literally in that world for almost 3 hours and it was hard for me to leave. I am in no way a fan of Sci-Fi but this is was an incredible film.
