Tennis : WOMEN'S! - 09/12/11 10:12 AM

Serena yelled something before the ball hit the court and she loses the point? Them's some stupid rules there.

I had the volume down but I think I lipread her saying, "CHECK MY BALL, HOZERS!"

Re: Tennis : WOMEN'S! - 09/12/11 12:22 PM

Seems like a stupid rule when you can grunt as loud as you want but can't say any WORDS during a point.
Then again, players may start yelling WORDS on purpose to try and distract their opponents.
Serena yelled because her testicle became entangled in her underwear. Happens to the best of us.

It may be an [censored] thing to do, like a catcher screaming out whiffa right before the pitch comes in or crying out miss right before a free throw, but it shouldn't be illegal. Stupid.

Re: Tennis : WOMEN'S! - 09/12/11 02:24 PM

It's a reasonable rule and she absolutely deserved to lose the point.

Serena is probably the greatest women's player ever, but even when she's losing, she still has to live within the rules.

Re: Tennis : WOMEN'S! - 09/12/11 02:30 PM

Why is it a reasonable rule?

Re: Tennis : WOMEN'S! - 09/12/11 03:06 PM

The player with head down trying to keep an eye on the ball has to try and determine whether someone is yelling "out" or "let" and lose their concentration.

Some players will yell out stuff all the time to distract their opponents.

Play on is what my coach always told me. If you're an [censored], you'll get that reputation for bush league tactics, and no one will root for you. But it shouldn't be illegal. Even wussier than soccer.

Re: Tennis : WOMEN'S! - 09/12/11 04:55 PM

I watched a women's qualifiers match a few years ago in which one doubles side acted out in the most bizarre way, yelling abusive stuff at the chair, "Are you blind," constantly, then cursing at her in some Eastern European language. It was weird and it wasn't much fun for spectators--or their opponents.

Finally, one spectator went and got the head umpire and it quieted down for awhile. The noisy team was losing and wanted to get into the other doubles team's head.

It was easier to understand some of the rules--because when there's money on the line some players will take advantage of whatever they can.

The story here should be that Stosur played an amazing match, especially given that the incident got the crowd against her.

Football penalizes college kids for "celebrations" that sometimes seem very mild. Is it also a wussy sport?

As for Serena, would that she be as classy as her sister always has been.

Yes. Wussy. Please refer to threads about football currently on basketball board.

Re: Tennis : WOMEN'S! - 09/12/11 05:28 PM

Hey whit. Why don't you explain why the rule is unreasonable, rather than descend into "wussy" nonsense.

You asked why the rule was reasonable. It was explained to you. You disagree. But as best I can tell, you don't have a reason for disagreeing other than the fact that you don't like wussiness. Or something.

So...explain it better. If you can.

Re: Tennis : WOMEN'S! - 09/12/11 05:35 PM

I was just being facetious. You know all about it.

I for one am against many rules regarding sportsmanship as long as it directly doesn't influence the game. I don't think that yelling, and as Gutter pointed out people grunt and scream nonsense and that's OK, influences the game directly. Nor do I think a celebration should be penalized, unless it goes on forever and changes the flow of a sport or involves another member of the team physically.

Athletes should regard themselves how they want. If they want to be assholes, let them. Let their colors show on through. If the coach is all for that too, we can see what kind of coach he/she is. Let the characters show!

Re: Tennis : WOMEN'S! - 09/12/11 06:12 PM

But in tennis it can directly influence the game.

If you watch Roger Federer, you know that a reason for his greatness is that he never lifts his head or takes his eye off the ball. If the other person/team is yelling to distract a Federer, it may make him take his eye off the ball. \

If that happens over and over and the bad sport wins--maybe that's fine with people who follow some sports. In tennis, we tend to admire those who've worked really hard on their strokes, their conditioning, and their mental agility. If that's "wussy", that's us tennis types.

When you're playing doubles and you're at the net, you're extremely vulnerable to a lobbed ball hit down at you from the other side of the net. You don't turn and watch your partner hit the ball back, you watch to see it cross the net. If someone is trying to distract you so their partner can then try to kill you with an overhead, that'd make the game pretty unpleasant and somewhat dangerous.

Don't they have fouls in basketball, or refs who call them?

Re: Tennis : WOMEN'S! - 09/12/11 06:16 PM

They don't call a foul if someone yells at you while you are shooting a jumper; something that also takes hard work, conditioning and mental agility.

Re: Tennis : WOMEN'S! - 09/13/11 01:30 PM

C'mon, pwhittemore, don't they have something called "technicals" in basketball?

Williams berated an official for a good 5 minutes. She could have gotten away with that in basketball? Football?

Seriously, she just costs herself money in endorsements. I believe that Federer had an equally bad temper as a junior. He hasn't let it cost him money as an adult, though.

It may not be great for the sport, but I bet Womens' tennis ratings would skyrocket.

They'd have to show it on pay per view Cable, though.
