BREAKING: ROYALS TRADE FOR OF JUSTIN MAXWELL

BREAKING: ROYALS TRADE FOR OF JUSTIN MAXWELL - 07/31/13 02:09 PM

If you don't know his name, you shouldn't feel bad. He is a 4th OF. Played for Houston all year.

The guy is 29 years old, hitting .240 with no power. He is, however, a pretty good hitter against lefties. He's decent defensively.

I'm not a fan of the trade, but I'm sure they didn't give up much, so whatever. More details to come when it's announced what the Royals gave up.

The guy did have 18 home runs last year and with the amount of lefties we have in our lineup, having a guy that can pinch hit against a lefty could have some value.

Kyle Smith is who we traded.

He is a good RH hitter. Showed some good power last year hitting 18 HRs. His OBP is over .300 throughout his career. This is what KC was looking for, a good RH hitter that has some pop.

Which is fine, except he is not good. He can hit lefties some, but it seems to me like the Royals had this guy all year, and his name was Jeff Francoeur.

Winner. Francoeur has the better arm. Maxwell has more range. Francoeur might have a little more power. Maxwell hits for a slightly better--albeit still abysmal--average. Maxwell has better plate discipline. Maxwell has more speed. Francoeur was getting $8M. Maxwell is under contract until 2017 getting less than $500K.

Maybe a slight upgrade from Frenchy. But he isn't anything worth being excited about.

Royals receive:

OF Justin Maxwell (.241/.311/.387, 2 HR, 8 RBI in 2013)

Astros receive:

P Kyle Smith (104.1 IP, 5-4, 2.85 ERA, 1.169 WHIP, 8.3 K/9, 3.31 K/BB @ Hi-A Wilmington in 2013)

Frechy's hitting .203 with an OBP of .240, SLG of .302 and and OPS of .542. Maxwell's hitting .241, OBP of .311, SLG .387, and OPS of .698. Also a career .824 OPS vs. lefties.

But the thing is Maxwell is not going to play everyday. The real question is now, do the Royals dare send down Lough, or send Maxwell to AAA until September call ups? This was mainly for depth, I think, and the options in the OF past the guys in the majors now are very slim.

Being under contract for another 3+ years is nice. Especially for cheap.

I don't get it....not one bit.

Can this guy play 2B? If not, this trade makes zerooooooooooooooooooooooooo sense to me, none, squat, nil....what other words can I use?

I think the Royals platoon a bit with Maxwell getting some starts against lefties.

So clearly an OF is going down to the minors....who is it.....and why?

Because they didn't trade for this guy to be a 5th OF....or did they?

Good lord...I need a drink.

.

Don't overlook it. Brought in for depth in the OF. It's no guarantee he will be with the big league club.

This makes just no sense. And to give up a 20 year old pitcher? I get that his numbers are skewed by his park/league, but Jesus.

So you're trading a 20-year old pitcher who has shown lots of promise (yeah yeah, I know all about the park/stuff) for a guy that might not even be on the roster.

That's comical at best.

Exactly.

Kyle Smith is very young and very far away from the majors. But he has been doing very well this year in A+. Certainly a top 6 or 7 pitching prospect in the organization. I don't think the Royals shot themselves in the foot by losing him. But he could have had value a few years down the line.

I don't see what Maxwell brings, other than some decent hitting against lefties. Granted, Maxwell was injured earlier this year and hasn't looked right since. But it's not as if he was a superstar before. The guy is 29. He isn't a prospect. He isn't even young. I expect to see him in AAA, unless the Royals think they can do without one of their bullpen guys. Which is entirely plausible. Mendoza and Coleman can go to AAA when Duffy comes back and (presumably) Wade Davis moves to the middle-long reliever role.

At the end of the day, this trade doesn't make me mad. It just doesn't make sense. But it's just so inconsequential that I don't really care.

Re: BREAKING: ROYALS TRADE FOR JUSTIN MAXWELL - 07/31/13 03:52 PM

I think the main thing KC was wanting to do was keep the team together and not ruin the chemistry. Santana is a well-liked guy and has been outstanding this year.

Re: BREAKING: ROYALS TRADE FOR JUSTIN MAXWELL - 07/31/13 03:58 PM

Any chance Santana gives KC preference this off-season because they took a chance on him? I doubt it. I don't even know if I want to see KC give Santana a big deal this off-season. They probably get two years slightly worse than this one, but still very good. But they probably also get two years of 5.00+ ERA pitching.
