Sit this one out, CnB.

I'll be there tonight. This sort of situation is why you acquire Shields, and here's hoping he rights the ship.

The bats need to get Shields a win tonight. I have no doubt that he'll look good. It would be great if the top of their rotation sweeps Tampa.

Opening a beer and waiting for the first pitch. It would be nice to watch baseball past the All Star game this year.

Wasn't going to post until I saw this.

Great game, Royals! Shields hanging tough after a rough 1st inning. Great to see Moose wake up, even if it is only one game.

I'm seeing Mendoza listed as the starting pitcher for Wednesday. Am assuming that's an error. Anyone know the story? I missed most of the game tonight.

Re: Series 9: TB @ KC - 04/30/13 10:55 PM

Actually, I don't understand it. If the intent is that the baseball season is a marathon and not a sprint, I get it, but a season is a huge collection of subtleties. I think baseball is the greatest game to dissect because of the strategy, the minutiae that often end up as the difference between a win and a loss, the fact that one hit in 20 ABs is the difference between an average hitter and an all-star, etc.

Or, if you believe we shouldn't be discussing a professional team in Kansas City on a KU message board, I can see that, but there's clearly a precedent on the basketball, football and baseball boards.

So, I think I disagree with you (rather strongly), but I'm not exactly sure on what grounds. There are some pretty sharp baseball folks on here and I enjoy reading their thoughts about the games. Feel like we've waited a ridiculously long time to have a competitive team in this market. Even though I don't anticipate KC winning their division, it's fun to finally think that it is within the realm of possibilities. I hope the knowledgeable baseball folks on here continue to discuss the Royals on a game-by-game basis.

Nah, you agree with me.

Let's keep the discussion intelligent, and not knee-jerk was my main point.

Agree on astuteness of many posters here. It's fine to discuss Royals, or whatever people want here (it's a forum, after all, I think that's the point).

I do disagree that the Royals won't win division. Call it desperate optimism or whatnot, but I just like the feel of the team this year.

I wish you were around last season (maybe you were, I don't rememeber) when WaHawk was preaching all season long that Hosmer was having a good season, and that Moustakas sucked.

It was a fun year-long, and seemingly every day argument.

I was lurking....i'm not a fair weather fan, but I don't like talking about how bad my team is with other fans of my team. I don't get involved in KU football for that reason.

If it were the case where most of the people were reasonable in the bad times, it would be another thing, and would be fun to prognosticate. Arguing round and round with dolts, though, isn't my thing.

I'll make fun a little, but in the long-term, no thanks.

So, this year, I think this forum will be more interesting from a factual standpoint, and more fun in an applicable way based on the play on the field.

Re: Series 9: TB @ KC - 04/30/13 11:53 PM

Moustakas was insane tonight. He lost his mind in the dugout after that homerun. This team won't win the division as they are right now. But if the great starting pitching continues and Moose, Hosmer, Butler, and Perez all start hitting to some extent, the Tigers need to watch out. So far the offense has been a patchwork.

Last year took my 10 month old to a game against the Rangers that was very close and the stadium was loud. We also had to leave because of the noise and heat because we went on a June night.

But this is why Shields was traded for. He had a bad 1st inning, but then retired 20 of the next 22 or something like that. Pitched very well, and that 6th inning was huge, but the fact they added more runs in 7th and 8th was big to push that lead to 6 and let the bullpen cruise for another W.

This will be a telling stretch of the season. TB, ChiSox, @Balt, NYY, @LAA and @OAK.

Thought the crowd was really disappointing. 12,000+ for your ace on the mound against a (now) perennial contender, and it's sunny and 80 to boot? Poor form.

Mid week game with school still in session and finals around the corner for the poor college kids saving their money for cheap beer on the weekend could be an explanation for lack of butts in the seats.

Great to see Shields get runs support against his former team that thought he was washed up.

Shields has now posted a quality start in five of his six outings.

I think there's also some healthy skepticism. I do believe, though, that if this team is still flirting with the division lead come June, you'll see crowds regularly in excess of 30,000.

I don't blame the fans.

For all the good things the Royals have done this off-season, and for all the encouraging signs so far early this season....this team is still the same organization that hasn't made the playoffs in 25+ years.

They're gun-shy about being all-in on this team at this point.

Give it a month or two, if in late June, early July, this team is still hanging around, the people will come.

I was gonna comment on that, but figured one of these super-wise baseball posters would have chastised me. I'm too sensitive for that.

Besides, I remember posting about the state of the KC baseball fan last year, and you yourself told me the fans would come in droves.

I didn't really believe it last year, but more likely to this year. My optimism regarding the Royals this year will go longer than it has most of my adult life.

I think younger fans who have never lived in a better baseball town think 17-18,000 is a good crowd. It's not. If this team is competitive, 25+ needs to be the norm, and weekend games should be 32+.

It makes no sense why they would not. What competes with the sports entertainment $$$$ in the summer?

Whateverthephuck the MLS team is called?

Prove me wrong about not being a Major League Sports town, KC.

Or go have more babies and eat more BBQ.

Your choice.

Edit: For the record, I've always been of the opinion the KC is a baseball town @ heart FIRST. Chiefs included. That franchise resembles a failed abortion. Red is appropriate to represent.

Re: Series 9: TB @ KC - 05/01/13 11:05 AM

MLS has 18k+ for every game, but I'm not sure they're competing for the same market.

I think a little bit of it is fatigue. KU/MU football. Chiefs. KU Basketball.

Not a great excuse, but I get the sense that the 'burbs follow the colleges more closely than most cities.

I just don't get that feeling at all.

And, while I love the Royals, if the chiefs are an abortion, what does that make the Royals in the last 25 years or so?
Posted by: gquinn225

Re: Series 9: TB @ KC - 05/01/13 11:09 AM

I haven't lived there in 12 years, so I honestly don't know first hand.

Part of my perception is my own prejudice towards the hill-billy sect (which always seemed like the majority to me) of Chiefs fans.

Your point about the Royals is not ignored.
Posted by: CrimsonNBlue

Re: Series 9: TB @ KC - 05/01/13 11:12 AM

I'm no chiefs fan and have been to Arrowhead all of one time, so I understand the prejudice.

It's chiefs-talk here 365 days a year.

I don't like St. Louis, but I wish our city loved their baseball team as much as they do.
Posted by: JFish26

Re: Series 9: TB @ KC - 05/01/13 11:14 AM

And I'm saying KC fans largely don't even know that's what baseball is supposed to look like. For 25+ years, it's just been a pleasant background distraction in the summer.
Posted by: christgs80

Re: Series 9: TB @ KC - 05/01/13 11:14 AM

It's a different world we live in now. Baseball is nowhere near as popular as it once was, and football, despite all of its' issues, is as popular as it ever has been.

So like it or not, KC is a football town. Just like every other city that has baseball and football. (outside of say St Louis, and maybe Boston).
Posted by: CrimsonNBlue

Re: Series 9: TB @ KC - 05/01/13 11:18 AM

Maybe Boston?

Doesn't it go Sox-Bruins-Celtics/Pats?

10 yrs ago, definitely.

Now, it's probably:

Celtics/Sox-Pats (take your pick)/Bruins

The Bruins owner killed a lot of the fan interest in that team.
Posted by: christgs80

Re: Series 9: TB @ KC - 05/01/13 11:22 AM

And I guess I was just comparing cities as far as baseball vs football and the popularity of the teams that cities have both of.

I agree the Celtics are probably the most popular team in that city.

True dat..I know the population base isnt that much bigger in the St. Louis metro but the Cardinals organization has about 10x the history and tradition in baseball over the Royals...About the same as comparing KU and Ksuck basketball. The Cards, Yanks, Cubs, Mets, Red Sox all draw great...What other teams do well. Saw a Rockies game the other day vs the Braves and there was more Brave fans than Rockies fans in Coors Field....and that was about 150...lol.....And the Marlins after the building that new stadium is drawing like crap so far this year. Hey I will do my part...been to one Royals game so far....going Sunday afternoon...

Fish---I live about a mile from work. I've walked the last two snow storms, thinking that I might not get another chance to walk in the snow for a few months (it's not too cold, windy, or bone-chilling in Denver typically w/snow).

But I don't think I would go on a day like this.

Royals are saying the game is still on, but have a hard time seeing how they'll get the game in. Large area of rain (let's hope) knocking on the Truman Sports Complex door.

Hope they don't go like 2 innings and then shut it down. Would hate to waste a start by Santana (man, sure didn't think I'd be saying that a month ago).

Evan Longoria on my bench for my fantasy baseball team...that's how confident I am.

So of course they'll play 9, and Longoria will hit 3 HR's. That's sorta how my luck goes.

It's already raining pretty good in PV.

All these rainouts makes me want more Sunday day/night doubleheaders.

Chris---so far so good.

Die hard royals fan told me they'll play through rain, especially against an east team.

Not sure what that second part meant.

1. Your friend is a bit dramatic.

2. The Rays only come to KC once.

Re: Series 9: TB @ KC - 05/02/13 02:10 PM

That could end up being a big run. Keep it 1-0, get to an official game, and hopefully the weather then gets real bad.

Re: Series 9: TB @ KC - 05/02/13 02:14 PM

Might as well bring in Holland in the top of the fifth.

Re: Series 9: TB @ KC - 05/02/13 02:31 PM

Frustrating that they would delay in the bottom of the 4th. If there is even a brief window where they can play, bunt three first pitches back to the pitcher and bring in Holland.

Absolutely. Bat out of order three times in a row.

Re: Series 9: TB @ KC - 05/02/13 02:36 PM

Seems like they should have just called the game from the get-go.

A little frustrating if Santana gets wasted for a game that won't count.

Any good news on the weather front for later?

Re: Series 9: TB @ KC - 05/02/13 02:37 PM

Not really. I'm about five miles from Kauffman. Rain's not falling hard. To me, it seems like they should either just tough it out for an inning now or call it entirely.

Re: Series 9: TB @ KC - 05/02/13 03:00 PM

It's stuff like this from the Royals that really frustrates me. It was blatantly obvious before the game that the weather was going to present a problem in rather short order. Is there not anyone within the chain of command there that can extrapolate a large area of green and yellow immediately southwest of the K as it moves to the northeast? I realize they want to get the game in. They're playing well, healthy and you have arguably your best SP going. But now, they've probably wasted Santana's start. Even if a brief break in the precip occurs, I highly doubt the ump is going to head back out there in 37-deg. temps to try to get one more inning in.

Stupid.

Looks like they'll get it to the 5th at least. Maybe not much farther.

Yeah I don't know what the deal was. It looked like they were getting ready to play a bit more and then they staked down the tarp.

Re: Series 9: TB @ KC - 05/02/13 03:54 PM

Would it be too much to ask those multimillionaires to also do a little entertaining during a rain out? It's a recession after all and the players need to make just as much effort as the college kids.

I have "Danced" on this very field during a baseball game with my team.... long time ago.... good time was had.

Shout out to Yoda for sharing the knowledge of his playing baseball for 15 years and "winning" fantasy baseball leagues. I'm your huckleberry laugh

Royals in first place is odd but we'll take it and just see what happens next.

Funny to look at the stand during the rain/sleet on Thursday. You can tell only scouts are there to watch the game as they are mostly single older gentleman.
