5 games back - 06/17/12 10:13 PM

I'm not getting my hopes up just yet but this last week of baseball for KC was crazy. The bounces are going their way right now unlike at the start of the season. If they could just hold on until the ASG, maybe that our time slogan will come true.

Always good to get a series win over the red birds too!

Re: 5 games back - 06/17/12 10:17 PM

I get my hopes up too easily, only for the Royals to let me down, go on a 5 game skid. Would love to see them get back to .500, then see what happens.

A sweep of Houston would be nice, especially with a difficult 6 game homestand on the horizon against St Louis and Tampa Bay.

I just want to watch some meaningful baseball games in July/August before football season.

Is that too much to ask?

A lot of winnable games leading into the Break.

That early losing streak and injuries hurts all the more.

I suggest sending a gift of pie to the club house. You'll be surprised at how much this does to lift their spirits and bring out the best in them.

Love beating the Cardinal Morans but 5 games below .500? Time for a 12 game losing skid.....that is just how KC rolls.

Re: 5 games back - 06/18/12 12:57 PM

Getting more and more important that Dayton find a way to get Myers and Odorizzi up and playing regularly. Don't underestimate the impact adding those two (along with Cain and Perez) could have...spin some bullpen depth off for another reliable starter and things could get pretty interesting.

Re: 5 games back - 06/18/12 05:15 PM

If they do call up those four players, who would you send down?
Posted by: JFish26

Re: 5 games back - 06/18/12 05:25 PM

Trade Francoeur. (Myers)

Jettison Mendoza. (Odorizzi)

Send down Dyson. (Cain)

Cut Quintero. (Perez)

For one or two bags of baseballs?

This is also when I bring up that I think we should have traded Soria a little over a year ago.

I think a replacement zipper for the bag of balls we got in the Jermaine Dye trade would do just fine.

Yes, that was the only painful part about reading Moneyball. It sucked at the time but then I had to read about it later...

Agree with all that, except it's time for Mitch Maier to go bye-bye. Dyson should be kept on the roster as a late-inning pinch runner.

I'm not sure how or why Maier has stayed on this team for as long as he had.

Brain fart on my part. Definitely keep Dyson over Maier.

I just don't see this happening Fish. The Royals love having him as a member of the clubhouse and I think Frenchy genunitely likes being here too. To me, business is business, it SHOULD happen.

I, along with many others, have doubts that the Royals see any urgency in making this happen, and that even if they do, they'll do so by making an alternative move that makes everyone else scratch their heads.

Re: 5 games back - 06/20/12 08:44 AM

Kind of makes you wonder what the Royals will do if they're within five games in a month.
Posted by: JFish26

Re: 5 games back - 06/20/12 08:47 AM

Well...keep in mind that a move now (whether internal or external) will have more impact (5/6 starts, 100-125 plate appearances) than a move a month from now.

Re: 5 games back - 06/20/12 03:58 PM

4 back now. 5 games below .500 since mid-May. Pretty good bounce back for Chen today.

Re: 5 games back - 06/20/12 04:00 PM

Man, the offense really needs to get it going.

This pitching staff isn't going to hold up....the offense needs to start helping out more.

Anybody know when Sal Perez is coming up?

He's played a handful of games so far in Omaha...I'm sure they're treating this like his spring training.

Maybe after the all-star break?

Radio this morning said maybe for the STL series.

Oh wow.

Didn't think it would be that soon.

It'll be nice having him back.....get hm and Cain back...bring up Myers...now we're talking.

Edit: Rany just tweeted Perez will probably be behind the plate Friday night. Good stuff.

I hated the rash of injuries the Royals have been hampered with, but the fact they've hung in with the guys they have is a feat in itself.

Perez, Cain, (hopefully) Myers all joining the big league club in the near future will almost act like a mid-season move in itself.

I don't care what the Royals do with Frenchy, but they NEED to make room for Myers somehow, some way, soon.

Don't let me down Dayton Moore...(which of course means he will)

Frenchy's 7 million dollar contract next year will be an albatross in trying to interest anyone.

This.

I just had this conversation last night. The Royals did overpay for Francoeur, but not by a lot. I think if the Royals were willing to eat $2 Million for a season, there would be several teams interested.

My preference would be get rid of Quintero when Perez comes back, and cut Meier when either Cain or Myers comes up.

From what I read, the Royals offered both Francoeur and Melky Cabrera the same contract this past off-season. Francoeur said yes, Melky said no...bye bye Melky.

Things might be a bit different had Melky said yes to it.

That's my preference as well, so my guess is that DM has a different opinion. I just have little faith in him at this point.

Re: 5 games back - 06/20/12 10:35 PM

There's ZERO reason for Maier to be on the team. None.

I wouldn't have a huge problem with keeping Quintero over Pena...personally I'm not a fan of either player.

But if he keeps Maier over Dyson....or keeps Myers down in the minors just to keep Maier on the big league team....well then I have a serious issue with it.

Who is the GM that brought you Hosmer, Moose, Myers, Perez, Escobar, Duffy?
You may have your preferences, but unfortunately DM has a small market business model that he has to follow.

Yeah, that's great and all, but I could give a [censored] about minor league championships. I realize that's where the building needed to begin, but you can't help but question some of the decision making involving the major league team. No GM is perfect, but the Royals have a knack for making all the wrong decisions.

Myers is sitting on a .330.409/.697(!) line in 300 plate appearances this year. There is nothing to be gained from allowing him to terrorize the minors any longer. Time to go.

Scuttlebutt is Myers is on the trading block.....and no I am not even kidding.

Glut in the OF...Dayton in love with Francouer, Cain almost ready to come back, Seriously I have heard this discussed. I understand keeping WM on the bench until after July 10 for contractual reasons but if he is traded unless it is flat out blockbuster I am done with the Royals as long as DM is at the helm.

A case can be made to trade off Wil Meyers that would make perfect sense. I would prefer it not to happen, but it could.
There is a glut in the outfield, only because Myers is advancing faster than what the timetable was determined to be. Myers wasn't expected to be forcing the Royals hand at this point, this was supposed to happen until next year, which is why Frenchy is signed through next season.
Myers was playing third base again in Omaha, maybe he will be playing a variety of positions once he is called up.

Went and looked this up. We are nowhere near safely past the Super Two line. The new CBA has that line moving all over the place and it is not the same every year anymore. I know now why I kept hearing July 10 and it is because that is where most teams think it safely falls without about two week of padding in there.

Throw in the Paulino injury. Most definitely. That's who they are this year though. They're a .500 team at best. Will go through a 9 game stretch where they'll win 7 then turn around and lose 4 or 5 in a row.

Re: 5 games back - 06/24/12 04:56 PM

Been a tough year to suffer through. How many expected contributors have missed significant time?

Soria
Duffy
Paulino
Cain
Perez
Escobar
Holland

Hosmer's been a wreck. Sanchez an unmitigated disaster. Gordon seems like he aged three years during the offseason. Francoeur is blocking Myers. Outside of Odorizzi, no pitching has made significant progress.

Yuni.

For a franchise that really could have used a two- or three-year period where things mostly go right...they haven't.

Re: 5 games back - 06/24/12 05:31 PM

I'm just glad the Royals are keeping Odorizzi down in Omaha...keeping his pitch counts down, giving him that TLC that has made this organization a model for player health.

Yep, this pretty much sums it up (except Escobar hasn't been injured at all, unless I missed something today).

Last year, the Royals had hardly any injuries at all...the law of averages said it would turn ugly for them this season, and it certainly has.

Honestly, not much has gone right this season....outside of perhaps Moustakas having a big sophomore season.

Two way street. If you are going to hold the Royals hitting poorly against him you also have to credit him when they hit well.

Remember when last year he was a genius with:

Hosmer-Francouer-Melky?

Don't you have to credit him with the hitting of Moose and Escobar and Butler this year?

I am not saying he has helped or hurt one way or the other just pointing out that it is pretty tough to put any kind of meaningful metric to a hitting coach.

Re: 5 games back - 06/24/12 10:57 PM

I don't think he's calling for all the bunts, Yost coaches a NL way. He needs to let some of players swing away in some bunting situations.

He plays for a small inning way too early. Bunt in the 8th or 9th when you're playing for 1 run. With the strong bullpen, maybe even the 7th, that's fine. A sacrifice in the first 6 innings is a complete waste of an out.

How many times have the Royals scored more than 4 runs in an inning this year? I'd be curious to see the breakdown on how they compare to other teams.

As for Seitzer, I don't really place any blame on him, yet I fear he may be the scapegoat.
Posted by: JFish26

Re: 5 games back - 06/25/12 09:15 AM

I don't know what to think of Seitzer. On one hand, Gordon, Hosmer and Melky last year and Moustakas and Escobar this year. On the other hand, Hosmer and Gordon this year.

My guess is Seitzer is not the problem, and firing him would do more harm than good.
Posted by: christgs80

Re: 5 games back - 06/25/12 09:25 AM

I tend to agree....but like others have stated....somebody will be the scapegoat, and Seitzer is the obvious choice.
Posted by: jammahawk

Re: 5 games back - 06/25/12 12:03 PM

I judge hitting coaches on whether they make a impact on select players. Seitzer is a mentor for Gordon, Charlie Lau was a mentor for George Brett. There were plenty of players on the Royals squad in the '70's that failed at the plate, but Lau is remembered for Brett.
