Baseball is boring - 11/23/09 09:58 AM

... escpecially as played in Kansas City.

A few random notes... JFish has invited us to come over and say a few words to you all, Since baseball is the topic, I will say I am not a big fan. It is 5 minutes of action, drawn out over several hours. Probably less entertaining than soccer, but baseball IS good background noise for taking a nap.

I do like KU baseball better than Royals baseball, because it has to do with my alma mater, and the players have a much higher skill level (with the exception of Greinke who is good enough to play professionally if he ever gets out of KC).

Let's see... on topic of forum... check.

Mentions KU baseball unlike many JFish threads... check.

I think we're OK here. We have our bases covered (ha ha).

EOI thanks you for the suggestion, JFish.

Re: Baseball is boring - 11/23/09 10:05 AM

Sorry Wiscy, but baseball offers more strategies than most sports. It is not a game for the fan who wants to just sit and be entertained, you have to actually study what is happening.
BTW, college baseball is a bastardization of the game of baseball, it is to baseball, what indoor soccer is to World Cup Soccer.

I don't know of what you speak. Everything is in ship-shape order on this thread-- Please refer to the above-referenced checklist. The only exception is that YOUR comment had nothing to do with baseball. We'll let that slide.

If you do not find this thread to be in agreement with your love of baseball, well... you've got 75 other threads on this forum to disagree.

Don't be a hater.

Re: Baseball is boring - 11/23/09 10:11 AM

Ah, thank you for your BASEBALL-RELATED reply (I'm looking at you,, Fish).

If one wants a strategy game, football is far better, in my opinion. I'll grant baseball has stategy, but so does Battleship, and they are both about as athletic. I do give MLB credit for allowing 18 year olds to go pro. That truly is more American than the NBA or NFL.

I don't like aluminum bats, but I do like unifroms that have "KU" on them... and since KC does not have a pro baseball team, I'll stick with college baseball when given the choice, as a local fan who enjoys rooting for local teams.

Re: Baseball is boring - 11/23/09 10:15 AM

I tend to ignore the Baseball Forum, but for some reason I had to check it out. Upon looking at the main index, I have discovered that someone else thinks baseball is boring as well. I also discovered that they still play major league baseball in Kansas City (somewhat).

Re: Baseball is boring - 11/23/09 10:17 AM

A strategy game, Wiscy? How could you forget about the "other sports" thread about the young and up and coming horseshoer? What was his name again? Slips my mind, but it seems like I remember him getting an offer from KU to PITCH.
Posted by: WisconsinJayhawk

Re: Baseball is boring - 11/23/09 10:22 AM

Horsehoes has strategy too.

One thing about Baseball-- lots of screwballs.

I don't know what got me fired up about baseball today either... the thought of it just sort of bowled me over.

My great uncle grew up with and was best friends with Ray Schalk, from Litchfield Illinois. Ray is in the Hall of Fame, holds (held?) the record for steals by a catcher, and was on the 1919 White Sox team (Black Sox) but was not one of the guys involved in fixing the series.

So I have some street cred here, I figure.
Posted by: JHAWKinKY

Re: Baseball is boring - 11/23/09 11:06 AM

Ray Schalk, huh? Haven't heard that name in a while. He actually came up with the Milwaukee Brewers and was sold to the WhiteSox. I love how they sold players back then. There is actually a museum in Nokomis, Illinois dedicated to Schalk, Jim Bottomley, and a fellow by the name of Red Ruffing. I would like to know more about those guys if anybody could help. Say, in another thread, dedicated to each one of them.
Thanks in advance.

Re: Baseball is boring - 11/23/09 11:10 AM

That is impressive. I had no idea anyone would remember the old fart.

Ray used to go to the Hall of Fame every year for induction ceremonies. I have a bunch of programs signed by Ray to my Great Uncle, who used to go with him sometimes.
Posted by: JHAWKinKY

Re: Baseball is boring - 11/23/09 11:14 AM

I would think "Frequency" with Dennis Quaid who starred in "The Rookie" would be up there. Just a thought in case anybody would want to run with it.

t_jayhawk, kumath, in saying "this is retarded" was taking exception, in particular, to my statement that KU baseball involves a higher skill level than the Royals (since he bold faced that part of my post). That he calls retarded, without ever bothering to look in the mirror and realize that even math majors can be retarded enough not to recognize sarcasm. It is ironic, is it not, that the 5th most interesting thing about baseball is how boring it is...

Re: Let's Talk About How Baseball is Boring - 01/04/10 10:58 AM

Reminds me of a question my father the mathetician put on one of his exams: Prove that all integers are interesting.

Proof: Suppose that this is false; that not all integers are interesting. Take the set of uninteresting integers. Examine the smallest one. An interesting fact about this integer is that it is the smallest uninteresting integer. Therefore it is in fact, an interesting interger and not a memeber of the set of uninteresting integers. Discard it. Then, examine the new smallest uninteresting integer. Same thing. Ad infinitum.

Therefore, there are no uninteresting integers.

Boring I know. But not any more so than baseball.

Baseball is the best sport known to man. KU basketball is a love of mine, but nothing with ever top MLB baseball for me.

I plan on going to several KU baseball games this year. It would be nice to witness a solid season from them.
