Satellite Question

Satellite Question - 11/17/10 06:28 PM

I'm actually thinking of getting DirectTV. I live in New York--so there is some wind--and some rain and snow. But it's 10 dollars cheaper a month, I get more channels and the internet ( that comes packaged ) is 3 times faster.

Is the threat of outages due to weather worth the channels, money saved and porn downloaded?

Re: Satellite Question - 11/17/10 07:16 PM

i've got dish network and love it. it has only gone out a couple of times when it is real windy. since i live in a tornado area that is probably not the greatest thing. but i don't care. i'm willing to risk my and my family's life for the wonder that is satellite tv.

Re: Satellite Question - 11/18/10 11:22 AM

What is the internet speed for DirectTV, etc? I'd probably switch but I rely heavily on the 'net for work and can't stand slow service.

Re: Satellite Question - 11/18/10 12:24 PM

Fast, I'll bet. Hope that helps.
Posted by: pwhittemore

Re: Satellite Question - 11/18/10 12:36 PM

1.5 to 3 Mbps. As opposed to 768 kbps...which honestly is not what cable is giving me at certain times of the day. I have done a number of tests and sometimes the speed gets down to 100 k a sec. It's miserable.

Re: Satellite Question - 11/18/10 02:21 PM

Oh man, these guys.
So all this cheap stuff comes with a 2 year lock down...activation free, first 12 mos 15 dollars off but then you gotta pay full price. You end up paying more actually, for 2 years, albeit a very minimal difference ( 120 dollars ).

So is having ESPNU (4 KU games on ESPNU this year) and 3 times the internet speeds worth losing 120 dollars, these 3 channels ( FX, AMC, Bravo ) and the threat of snow and wind cutting out the signal?

I've got Satellite Questions! I need answers guys!

Re: Satellite Question - 11/18/10 11:25 PM

I had Dish for 9 years and really never had outage problems.

Might lose signal for a couple minutes if rain is between me & satellite,
but that's it.

You can connect an outdoor antenna to the Direct TV receiver, and get
your locals in HD rain or shine. This served as a suitable backup for outages.

Cable now, switching to DirecTV soon.

I went with the Satellite. I'm getting it installed Saturday. Now, can someone get me the coordinates to the KU/OKSt game? Or is it rain delayed?

Is TruTV America's Top 125? Or did TruTV not even make the CBI?

i do want the bad news. you just offered that you had good news. i merely speculated what that good news is. if the good news is that you now get tru tv, it is not really good news. actually, it is bad news because that means you are shelling out more money just so you can get tru tv.
i was hoping your good news was that pele had died in a fiery car crash. that is the kind of good news that i like to hear.
Posted by: pwhittemore

Re: Satellite Question - 03/14/11 04:30 PM

If good news is that pele died in a fiery car crash, I have no good news. Only bad. And you can determine from the lack of good news what the bad news is. It has to do with pele. And car crashes.
Posted by: t_jayhawk

Re: Satellite Question - 03/14/11 08:32 PM

so pele had a safe trip in his car to lowes only to get run over by a forklift?
now, that truly is great news. or bad news. depends on the recipient of the news.

Posted by: t_jayhawk

Re: Satellite Question - 03/20/11 09:18 AM

i will let that question slide. this has been discussed many, many times at length. we felt the need to do that from a marketing standpoint. our marketing department feels that it helps to inundate the consumer (you) with "satellite coordinates" so that you will feel that they are important to you and you will keep coming back. and i believe that it has worked.

Dear me of the past: I'm still a very satisfied Satellite owner. After all the money and problems that cable presented, I keep wondering why I didn't switch earlier. Dish added FX ( they have the movies) and AMC. ESPNU is totally worth it. And I get alternate sports stations which means I get to watch Iowa State take on the Western Carolinas of the world.

You don't know how bad i want to be moderator of this board. I have done things that I regret in the past to try to be a moderator. Hell, I even slept with Geezer to get in his good graces. But he just cast me aside like the moderator [censored] that I am. I am willing to do anything to take your job, t_j.

Then i'll reinstate Gutter and PHOG and it'll just be the three of us, shooting the breeze. And i'll get rid of Satellite Coordinates because who needs Satellite Coordinates anymore?

I have no option but to initiate a violent coup against the powers to be on the satellite coordinates board. Assassinations will take place and I will become the sole moderator of this board. I will violently crush any rebellion that t_j's martyrdom promotes.
And i personally have an 8' dish in my yard. Did you know that you can switch between hard core porn and EVERY major league baseball game just by punching in the coordinates? That is what's missing on this board and what i aim to provide.

#224847 - Fri Jul 22 2005 11:01 AM Edit Reply Quote Quick Reply

I don't know who was responsible for the banning of psych, but he needs to be re-instated. The strength of this project has been in the past not to ban people. I realize that there have been a few cases where that has happened, but I know the stories behind most of them and it was necessary. While psych may have stepped over the line a few times, who hasn't? In any event, psych has requested that his ip be unbanned and his e-mail address be allowed to work. There are a number people on here who I would rather do without, but If psych is allowed to return it would allow for balance, and fair play. He was a moderator on here when no-one wanted the job. Now that the place is rolling perhaps we have forgotten how we got here and who's responsible. moderators, make it happen. Do we really want to be like "Its private dammit and it's all mine.bbs?" I think not. iowaboy

I think that earlier photo is modern art. The break in Charlie's zig zag line represents the fact that there really aren't any good men in the world but men that are better than others. The human race is flawed just like the pattern.
Posted by: ChalkRocker

Re: Satellite MYOB - 08/30/12 02:37 PM

You've put a great deal of thought into that -- and I agree that the break in the zig zag is a metaphor for the dissonance one feels when juxtaposing the ideal to which one aspired, against the cold reality of what one truly is.

But that's not the topic. Pls stay on it, pwhitt.

Re: Satellite MYOB - 08/31/12 10:12 AM

Why is a child like Charlie Brown bald? What could this represent?

I attribute the spherical melon-like quality of his head to a kind of Moby Dick-esque metaphor for a life of the mind and the hazards of becoming totally immersed in it: "poor Tashtego --like the twin reciprocating bucket in a veritable well, dropped head-foremost down into this great Tun of Heidelburgh, and with a horrible oily gurgling, went clean out of sight! Man overboard! cried Daggoo, who amid the general consternation first came to his senses. Swing the bucket this way! and putting one foot into it, so as the better to secure his slippery hand-hold on the whip itself, the hoisters ran him high up to the top of the head, almost before Tashtego could have reached its interior bottom."

But as to why that juvenile melon head is bald save one little curly hair, I just don't know.

Well, if you can't be in church on Sunday, or find that the old-lady smell in the pews is just too much to take for an hour or two, then watching football is the next closest thing to Godliness. Cleanliness is a distant second.

Undefeated, baby. They did give up their first defensive goal of the year (3 games so far). Cumulative score for the year is about 19-1.

And I am proud to that say my daughter was able to kick the ball at one point during the game.

Re: Satellite MYOB - 10/12/12 02:57 PM

The name "sassafras," applied by the botanist Nicolas Monardes in the 16th century, is said to be a corruption of the Spanish word for saxifrage, from the Latin saxifraga, meaning "stone breaker." It is usually thought to indicate a medicinal use for treatment of urinary calculi (known as kidney stones), rather than breaking rocks apart.

Drinking beer during a basketball game is a simple science. The game is divided into two halves. Each half is divided into five parts, four playing minutes until a tv timeout. Thus using my advance algebra education, I come to the conclusion that it takes 11 beers to make it through the game. 5 per half and one for halftime

Unfortunately, the developers have created mobile detection--they direct you to another version which needs a lot of work. There is a button on that mobile page that will take you to the Desktop Site.

I've asked for a redesign so that the mobile version would simply have the schedule/results, roster/stats and a link to the desktop site. I wouldn't hold your breath.

I am having a microdiscectomy tomorrow and will be out for a few days. Please take care of all Satellite questions and defend the land from pirates and anyone with one star.

Ive returned and my dick is intact. I see this place went to the shitter without me. Peace be with you tj.

Walter apparently wants to be king. It's a tough job trying to run this place but if he wants a crack at it, let's see what he's got. Could be the drugs talking though.

There's some heavy rain here and my Satellite is cutting in and out. This is one of the first times it's been a problem because I want to watch the NBA finals.

I also ordered Chinese food. Feel bad for the delivery guy.

Re: Satellite BYOB - 06/17/13 09:31 AM

So my wife and I were dog sitting yesterday and we were walking the dog in the park. The dog did his business and we immediately got out the bag and started to clean it up. Some lady comes out of her way to come over and tell us that "your dog shouldn't be doing that on the grass here."

I was new to the area so I wasn't 100% sure that wasn't allowed. But I hadn't seen one sign stating such. I said, "Well, we're just dog sitting so we didn't know."

Then she got kinda annoying and said, "Well there are signs all over the place."

I was pretty sure that wasn't the case so I said, "I didn't see any."

Then she starts pointing all around the grass, "Well there's like 12 signs. There are signs there and there and there."

By then, I was pretty upset so I kinda told her to mind her own business.

I guess I should have just left it there but I had to investigate. So I circled around the park looking at the signs. The signs she pointed to were all 'no parking' signs or 'no cycling' signs or 'recycle' signs. Not one sign about pets.

She was still there on the grass but quickly leaving. I think she noticed that I was looking around at the signs. What would you do?

I'd tell her "Bitch, you're out of your element!"

Re: Satellite BYOB - 06/17/13 01:18 PM

Park slope lady? Or crazy bag lady?

I struggle to not let people like that affect my day. I'll get pissed and think about it for hours and she's probably off protesting the use of crayons at her child's school or down at the pier communing with rats and doesn't remember talking to me

I'm hoping it's a process

Re: Satellite BYOB - 06/17/13 01:28 PM

Entitled north Hoboken lady. She got me very upset.

So I caught up to her, pointed to all the signs that she had pointed to earlier, and asked where the ones prohibiting dogs on the lawn.

Caught in her lie, she said, "Well there used to be signs here!"

What!? So was my Overlordship of The Kingdom of SACO just a temporary thing then? I'm so depressed now, I can't believe I am the equivalent of Adam Silver as the Deputy Commissioner.

Re: Satellite Question - 07/11/13 10:35 PM

Shiver me timbers Colonel Sanders, I remember his first day on the job. Back then he was a deckhand 'n his first duty was t' swab the poop deck. Worked his way up t' head chef, on the account that his chicken was mighty good. Wasn't the brightest o' scallywags, but due t' his cookin' abilities a few hands o' the crew gave 'im the nickname o' "Colonel." He ended up settlin' down in the colonies, ne'er heard much o' 'im aft that.

Re: Satellite Question - 08/09/13 10:10 AM

My half price HBO ends mid September and i've chosen not to renew. I got on the phone with Dish yesterday and talked Satellite talk for half an hour.
I ended up with NFL Redzone, MLB Network, Fox Sports Soccer and a bunch of regional sports channels ( Fox Sports MW included for some Big 12 action ) for half price.

It pays to talk Satellite.
