Directions? - 11/21/17 09:55 PM

I know, I know. I was curious as to what is the best way driving to Phoenix. Many say west out of Itchiita and drop down thru Liberal hwy 400 / 54? OR Thru Oklahoma City and across. I know what the interstate is like, but what about 54 across Kansas. Anybody offer any suggestions cause after all, I trust my KU brothers!!!!!!!!!!!! Didn't know where to post.

By the time I get to Phoenix, she'll be risin'.

I don't know how to get to Phoenix IB, but since you're on here why don't you tell us what to expect from the Clones this year.

I would take US 54 west out of Wichita until I hit I 40 at Tucumcari. Go West to Flagstaff, South on I 17 to Phoenix. I've driven that route several times. Road are good and it's shorter than through OKC. I just now saw your post. I may be too late to help you.

Sorry, I forget to tell him to dribble a basketball all the way or at least part of the time. Oh yes, and says, "Rock Chalk KU" every mile as he passes through Kansas. Is that close enough to basketball to make you happy?

I would take US 54 west out of Wichita

Jayhawk1952--ah, the memories! I drove that stretch of US 54 through Kansas hundreds of times and that's no exaggeration.

For vast stretches, you could doze off at the wheel, wake up and still be on the road.

And the tourist attractions: World's Largest Hand Dug Well in Greensburg (still there), Dalton Gang Hideout in Meade, World's Longest Railroad Expansion Bridge (over the Cimarron River outside Plains), Dorothy's house in Liberal.

And the events--Miss Kansas pageant in Pratt, the Little World's Fair in Kismet and the famed International Pancake Race in Liberal.

Those Were The Days! Thanks for the memories Jayhawk152..

Awe, you blew it 2004, you failed to mention anything about basketball and Old Phogy is going to be upset with you. I suggest that a slight detour be added to iowaboy's itinerary and that as he comes down I 35 he slip over to Lawrence on state 10 and see Allen Fieldhouse and all that is there to view. That would really make a capstone for his trip. He could then take the KS Turnpike to Wichita or drop down south on US 59 back to I 35. Glad I could give you some pleasant memories.

iowaboy has been to Lawrence before. His stench hasn't quite faded away.

I would avoid Wichita. A real armpit.

Happy Thanksgiving Jayhawk1952. Please start posting more often.

You got that right about Iowee boy. He thinks Lawrence is too big and fast paced for his taste. After living in Atlanta or 8 yrs there is nothing fast paced to compare in Kansas.

Clones are all new. Everyone's gone. Just one holdover. Lots of talent, very little experience. I doub't the Clones will be donning any chest hair this year. Middle of pack at best. Thanks for asking. IB

Re: Directions? - 11/28/17 05:43 PM

Take Highway 20 west to I-35. Turn north on I-35 and take that to Fargo ND, if you see signs with maple leafs on them you have gone too far, turn around. At Fargo take I-94 west to Billings, MT. At Billings take I-90 south to Buffalo WY, my friend Bob lives there. Ask him to give you recommendations for where to go for dinner. He is a nice guy you will like him. Mention that you heard his son is on the USS Nimitz and he might invite you in for a beer. Take I-25 south out of Buffalo and you should get to Denver on about Christmas Day. Stop by my house and we will have a beer and I will probably cook you dinner. Get back on I-25 and keep going south until you get to Las Cruces, NM. Again, if you come to fence and they ask you for your passport, you have gone too far. Turn onto I-10 east out of Las Cruces and continue until you see the ocean. Copperhead will buy you a beer and maybe a grilled veggie plate for lunch when you hit LA. Now get back on I-10 and drive back east to Phoenix. If you leave now you should get there for New Years.
