Recruiting Class 2020 News, Updates,etc! - 02/07/19 01:35 AM

1st Junior Day for the 2020 class is this coming weekend! I expect Miles and company to have some really good ones coming in. Heard they are concentrating more on local recruits with the 1st Junior Day while the 2nd one on Feb. 23 will be more concentrated on out of state recruits.

Recruiting never ends man!

Here's a few of the early offers for 2020.

Ashaad Clayton a 6'0" 190lbs. 4 star RB out of Warren Easton HS in New Orleans, LA. He's rated the #12 best RB in the country by Rivals as well as the #135 best recruit overall also by Rivals. We all know KU's tie to Warren Easton and that's coach Hull. Hull still doin some good work for us and Ashaad is coming up for our 2nd Junior Day on the 23rd of this month. I think he's one of our top targets for this class and I feel KU has a good shot with him.

Sedrick Van Pran a 6'4" 285lbs. 4 star OG out of Warren Easton HS in New Orleans. Again, coach Hull doin some work! He's a teammate of Ashaad and I believe there's a chance he comes along with Ashaad (and maybe a couple others) on the 23rd of this month for our 2nd Junior Day. He's got about 2 dozen offers already and he's rated the #119 overall prospect in the nation and #4 OG in the nation as well as the #4 rated recruit in the state of Louisiana by Rivals right now. Kid is a stud and would be a huge get for us if we could land him somehow. I think we'll be hearing more on him and KU over the coming months.

Turner Corcoran a 6'6" 270lbs. 4 star OT out of Lawrence Free State HS. Kid has a ton of offers/interest already and is rated as the #46 overall prospect in the nation by Rivals. Word on the street a month or 2 ago was he was set on going to a blue blood out of state type school somewhere. Don't know if coach Miles and company can change his mind or not, but I haven't heard anything on that front since I heard about him wanting to go out of state and to a blue blood type school. He's going to our Junior Day this coming weekend which should help give him more to think about in regards to staying home at KU. If the coaches can't change his mind, it won't be for a lack of trying. I think how our upcoming season looks will play a part in this also.

Myles Slusher a 6'0" 175lbs. 4 star CB out of Broken Arrow HS in Broken Arrow, OK. He's a teammate of recent KU signee Gavin Potter and already has about a dozen and a half offers. Don't know how close he and Potter are, but I don't think it could hurt having Gavin already committed here. Arkansas seems to be 1 of the more active teams on him right now. I won't be surprised if he makes an unofficial visit to KU this year though.

Ky Thomas a 5'11" 195lbs. 3 star RB out of Topeka HS in Topeka. KU, Iowa, Minnesota, and ksu have already offered him. Not sure when his offer from KU went out, but he's been on KU's radar for a couple of years now so both the previous staff and this one have been on him. He's going to be at our Junior Day on the 23 of this month. Rivals rates him as the #5 prospect in the state of Kansas for the 2020 class.

Nate Matlack a 6'4" 210lbs. 3 star WDE out of Olathe East HS in Olathe. He's rated as the #4 prospect in the state of Kansas by Rivals. He's already got offers from both KU and ksu as well as Syracuse. Kid looks active in his videos and high energy. He's gonna be here for our Junior Day this weekend. I heard some word in passing a couple months ago his family are ksu fans, but don't know of the accuracy of that.

Roger Rosengarten a 6'7" 275lbs. high 3 star OT out of Valor Christian HS in Highland Ranch, CO. He's got about 2 dozen offers already and I believe KU was 1 of his earlier ones. I seem to remember he got an offer from KU within the first few weeks coach Miles was on the job, but I could be wrong. Don't know much about him or his interest in KU, but he's a good one.

Dontae Manning a 6'0" 180lbs. 3 star CB out of Raytown HS in Raytown, MO. He's already got offers from KU, Okie Lite, ND, Nebraska, ISU, ksu, Iowa, and missery to name a few. He looks to be 1 of the top prospects in the KC area. He'll be here for our Junior Day this weekend. Only word I heard on him was months ago before our coaching change and that was that KU wasn't high on his list at that time. I imagine that's changed since then, but I don't know for sure.

Tayezhan Crough a 6'0" 175lbs. 3 star S out of Hutchinson HS in Hutchinson. Don't know much about him really, except that KU is his only official offer at this point in time. Heard he plans to be at 1 of our Junior Days, but that's really all I know about him right now. Rivals shows the corn and ksu are showing interest as well.

Daniel Jackson a 6'0" 180lbs. high 3 star WR out of Bishop Miege HS in Roeland Park, KS. He's got about a dozen P-5 offers already, including KU, ND, Wisconsin, Tennessee, aTm, ISU, Iowa, ksu, and missery to name a few. Rivals rates him as the #2 prospect in Kansas and he's 1 of the top prospects in the KC metro area as well. I believe he's going to visit on our Junior day this weekend as well. Heard some whispers ND is in the lead for him, but I have no idea of the voracity of those whispers or not.

Hayden Pauls a 6'4" 245lbs. 3 star OT out of Emporia HS in Emporia, KS. He's rated the #3 prospect in the state of Kansas and he's already reporting about a half dozen P-5 offers including KU, Iowa, NU, ISU, ksu, and Minnesota to name a few. He'll be here for our Junior Day this weekend but I don't know much else about him. Haven't heard if he has any favorites or not either.

Jalen St. John a 6'4" 300lbs. 3 star OG out of Trinity Catholic HS in St. Louis, MO. He's got a little more than a half dozen offers already with obviously KU being 1 of them. Blanking on the coach right now (been a long day!), but 1 of KU's assistants was recruiting him or knew about him before being hired at KU and he was 1 of the first offers KU made once that assistant coach was hired.

Kevin Tyler a 6'5" 290lbs. 2 star OT out of Ritenour HS in Overland, MO (St. Louis area). He's already got a half dozen D-1 offers and I believe he's another one 1 of our assistants knew about before being hired by KU. I heard he was going to try and make it to a Junior Day here at KU, but that was weeks ago and I haven't heard anything since. He looks like a promising OT prospect who will undoubtedly pick up some more offers in the coming months.

Those are just some of the names floating around out there for our 2020 class. I chose some because they're already gonna be visiting KU, some because they're some of the top regional prospects with KU offers, and some because they're highly sought after national level guys who are giving KU serious consideration and/or planning visits.

I'm sure there's gonna be a lot more names pop up in the next few weeks as our Junior Days come around as well as guys mentioning us on social media when we offer them. Enjoy!

*Edited to update some of the info on a couple of the guys.

Re: Recruiting Class 2020 News, Updates,etc! - 02/07/19 11:18 AM

Heard Malik Berry another Free State player is going to our Junior Day this weekend also. He's currently unrated by most of the recruiting services and plays both QB and S for Free State. He's 6'4" and 220lbs. and I believe he's going to be recruited on the D side of the ball in college. He's big and athletic and will probably project to a couple of different positions. Currently ksu is his only official offer, but I think he'll get one from KU soon and probably others not long after.

Hearing of a few more local guys who'll be attending our Junior Day this weekend too, but haven't heard enough to feel confident in posting it yet.

That is a lot of names (as always). Who are the couple that might have more of an interest in KU than the others right now?

I sure would like to see a quarterback on that list.

Well, I've heard a little bit more info since even my update to my original post.

Based on what I've currently heard, I'd say Clayton, Van Pran, and Manning seem to have the most interest in us right now.

Next highest level of interest in us if I had to guess would be Thomas, Matlack, and Jackson.

That's based on what I've most recently heard. We may find out differently after this weekend.

Several O-Linemen on the list. I like that.

Re: Recruiting Class 2020 News, Updates,etc! - 02/11/19 07:39 AM

Several more guys were at our Junior Day on Saturday than what I mentioned. Apparently a lot of them have sounded off on twitter about what a great time they had. A few guys who I don't think were giving us a ton of thought before now appear to be more seriously considering KU as an option too.

Re: Recruiting Class 2020 News, Updates,etc! - 02/11/19 09:55 AM

I could be wrong but saw somewhere on twitter they have 100 or so offers out already. They are really focusing on this class for sure!.

Re: Recruiting Class 2020 News, Updates,etc! - 02/11/19 02:01 PM

In addition to finishing off the 2019 class strong the coaches turned some of their attentions to the 2020 class after the early signing period. They've been hitting the 2020 recruiting and even some 2021 recruiting hard since mid January and they haven't slowed down any since signing day last week.

They were more than ready to go full on with the 2020 class the second all the 2019 guys signed. From all reports our 1st Junior Day went really well because of that simultaneous effort.

The next Junior Day on the 23rd is going to HUGE. A lot of really good out of state guys coming in, in addition to some more local guys who couldn't make it last Saturday.

Re: Recruiting Class 2020 News, Updates,etc! - 02/12/19 01:03 PM

Here's some more guys who made it to our Junior Day last weekend besides just some of the recruits I mentioned in my 1st post.

Will Huggins a 6'7" 225lbs. TE/WR out of Shawnee Mission South HS in Overland Park, KS. He's not widely known about yet with the national recruiting sites. I believe he left KU with an official offer though.

Matthew Roberts a 6'2" 210lbs. 3 star WDE out of St. Thomas Aquinas HS also in Overland Park, KS.

Isaiah Gavin a currently unrated 6'5" 170lbs. WR also out of St. Thomas Aquinas and teammate of the Roberts brothers.

Jaeden Roberts a currently unrated 6'6" 320lbs. OL also out of St. Thomas Aquinas and the younger brother of Matthew Roberts. So, he's a 2021 recruit and not a 2020 guy, but he did visit so I think it's pertinent to put him here.

Joe Campbell a 6'0" 180lbs. QB out of Raytown HS in Raytown and teammate of Dontae Manning.

Malik Johnson a 5'9" 175lbs. WR out of The Woodlands HS in The Woodlands, TX (Houston area). KU is his first official offer.

Brady Petersen a 6'5" 265lbs. OT out of Centennial HS in Ankeny, IA. Most think he's an ISU lock as both his parents went there and I believe 1 of his parents works for ISU. Big deal to get him to come down and visit though.

Javon Mosley a 6'1" 225lbs. DE out of Raytown HS in Raytown. Another teammate of Manning and Campbell. All 3 came as a group.

Just a few names of guys that were at KU last weekend.

What is the O/U for lineman in the '20 class? I think there will be a significant amount. That being said, I think far too many people are getting huffy puffy over the fact we didn't have any scholarship lineman in this class. We have a decent group already.

Re: Recruiting Class 2020 News, Updates,etc! - 02/13/19 11:56 AM

I don't know how many the coaches plan on taking or if that number will change depending on who all commits, but my best guess would be 5 or so right now.

That would be a perfect number in any year. ideally a program will get 5 OL, 4 DL, 4 DB's, 4 RB's , 3 LB's and 1 QB in every class, leaving 4 scholarships available for whatever needs may arise or in pass happy Big XII country 4 WR's. Though there could be a need for PK, LS and Punter. Though there should never be the need to recruit all three specialists in any season). I would also note that many RB's can end up LB's and DB's often end up receivers. 25 scholarships is more than enough to have quality linemen on both sides of the ball with DEPTH!

Re: Recruiting Class 2020 News, Updates,etc! - 02/13/19 06:36 PM

4 RB's seem a bit much to me. I'd think we're much more inclined to take 4 WR's per class than 4 RB's.

Also, when's the last time we had a RB move to another position or a DB move to WR?

Daymond Patterson is the last DB to move to WR that I can recall, but if memory serves he started out as a WR then moved to DB before moving back to WR.

I guess kind of the same thing with Charlot. He came as a WR, got moved to S, then back to WR.

The only other guy I can think of who came in on 1 side of the ball either O or D and moved to the other was Nick Reid who came in as a QB and moved to LB.

Kerry Meier came in as a QB and moved to WR, but obviously that's the same side of the ball.

So, I can't remember anyone off the top of my head who came in as a DB initially and then moved to WR nor someone who came in as a RB initially and then moved to LB. At least not someone who was a starter for us.

Guess I should add, I'm not saying we haven't had players come in at those positions and then move to the positions you mentioned Beenahawk, but I just can't think of anyone off the top of my head.

Re: Recruiting Class 2020 News, Updates,etc! - 02/14/19 08:52 PM

Looks like the coaches are still hard at work on the 2020 class.

KU just recently offered a couple big boys for those of you who love the OL/DL guys in Nicholas Dawkins a 6'5" 300lbs. 2 star OT out of Parkland HS in Allentown, PA and Jaylan Jeffers a 6'6" 256lbs. 3 star OT out of Saguaro HS in Scottsdale, AZ.

We also just offered Peter Latu a 6'5" 210lbs. 3 star LB/WR/PR out of Bethel HS in Spanaway, WA. This kid is a 4 star recruit all the way IMHO. He's explosive, athletic, and fast with great size and has really good instincts for the game. He's gonna be a player for someone, hopefully KU!

Link to his Junior season highlight video

From Allentown, PA to Spanaway, WA and Scottsdale, AZ this staff is leaving no stone unturned!

I wanted to say thanks for the info regarding Pooka missing the first game last season over on the other thread. Eligibility questions are entirely different than the present situation.
As an addition, JaCorey Shepherd came in as a WR and moved to DB because Dave Campo liked him so much.

No problem, just relating the last I had heard about that.

I'm hearing this is going to be another big Jr. Day with about 40 guys or so. It's mostly out of state recruits but also a couple of local guys who coudn't make the 1st Jr. Day.

Looks like we just got our first commit of the 2020 class!

I believe it's the WR Keenan Hambrick out of Athens HS in Athens, AL. He's 6'4" 190lbs continuing the trend of going after bigger taller WR's that Les and company seem to be implementing.

The previous staff was told by the AD to not take anymore commitments early last season and they were in do or die mode before that and everybody knew it.

Trying to use that as proof the previous staff couldn't recruit just doesn't hold up. I've said it before and I'll say it again, the previous staff's problems didn't include recruiting.

The idea of zero recruiting being told to Betty is highly suspect. Makes you look as if you are in the know. He had his chance but his HS background in Texas was not a chance in hell to succeed here.

Still kissing that idiots ass even after it hit the curb. You must really be a secret lover of his or something. Long didn't tell Betty to stop recruiting. If anything, he told him to stop recruiting JuCo kids. That erased 99.99% of his recruiting board.

You 2 love birds can believe whatever you want but I know for a fact Beaty and staff were told not to take any commitments early on last fall. You can blame him for putting himself in the spot of being in a do or die situation last year before he was told not to take any more commitments which kept recruits at bay. But before last year though he recruited well enough to win a lot more than he did. His problem wasn't a lack of recruiting.

Heck, KU should have gone bowling last year with the amount of talent he had recruited here. In the end he just couldn't coach. Micromanaging, over analyzing, getting in the way of and overriding his assistants, and not being able to identify who the top talent on the team was and hence who should have been starting or on the 2 deep were his main downfalls, not recruiting.

And little angry Freddie our resident internet tough guy with his gay fantasies about me. Too angry and too stupid to see things in anything but all bad or all good paradigms.

Sorry to blow up your little "insider" fantasy but you don't know [censored]. You take stuff spoon fed to you by people close to Betty and Bowen. All that you get is just a spun excuse as to why they failed miserably. You have no real inside information about the program and never have. You just make vague statements like "I'm hearing there are a few committed recruits that are interested but don't want it known.". That [censored] might fly over on the Slant by that lapdog Kirby because the people who buy his [censored] are literal retards but it doesn't work anywhere else.Stop the damn act and just go follow Betty's ass to Texass. You know, the place he was supposed to be able to recruit well but sucked so badly recruiting. People like you make this fanbase look stupid. You and that idiot that decided to trespass on an active runway to see if Les Miles was on a plane.

In the immortal words of Sgt Hulka; "Lighten up Francis." laugh

In all honesty, recruiting is hard, at least for everyone not named Saban! When today's HS kids hold your future in their hands! crazy It's much different today than even 10 years ago. Everything is now up to and dependent upon twitter and "likes" and "dislikes". Hopefully Miles is finding the kind of kids whose word is their bond, like most kids were 30 years ago. If anyone on this (or any other message board) thinks they are getting the inside scoop from virtually anyone, I would tell them to wait until the kid is actually INKED. Or one can speculate from a kids ex girlfriends BFF that she heard on Facebook that player X is going to #InsertSchoolHere because she saw something on Twitter that someone else said about prospect X after they saw the prospect at a Sonic Drive Thru. shocked

In the meantime, lets just enjoy the fact that HS kids are at least visiting and that our staff is good enough to ink the ones they really want. Because the visits are indeed a TWO WAY street, or should be. This is one old fan who would rather have a kid who is 2 inches shorter, 15 pounds lighter and a tenth of a second slower than the 5 Star, but more coachable in the long run. In other words, I'll take a team full of Jason Thoren's, Chip Hillary's and pass on the Marcus Dupree's.

Woohoo! Thanks Josh, for an entry with some on topic substance.
I know nothing about Huggins but depth at the TE position is a valuable commodity in RPO offensive scheme. Here's hoping he's an efficient blocker with good hands.

Kman certainly does go left field for stuff like this. Huggins fits the local boy wanting to be a Kansas grad athlete much like what the fan base here desires. Also a winner in HS. Unlike Betty in the Texass HS ranks.

So far the 2020 class looks like
Keenan Hambrick -- Wide Receiver
Trevor Kardell -- Wide Receiver
Will Huggins -- Tight End
Da'Vonshai Harden - Quarterback

I watched the HUDL video for Harden and most of the highlights are where he runs the football. There are a few passing highlights where he throws floaters. I bet he plays WR at KU.

I watched the Washburn rural game and between Thomas and Barksdale and Harden it seemed like every play was a 70 yard touchdown run. ... can’t imagine there was ever much need to pass the ball.

Did anyone watch the HUDL video for Jimmy "The Jet" Holiday? He is a QB that Rivals lists as an ATH recruit. I was not impressed with his passing highlights but he is fast. He is another QB that I think Miles would convert into a WR.

Keith Miller III a 6'5" 205lbs. 3 star WR out of The Colony HS in The Colony, TX just committed to KU! He chose KU over schools like TTech, Washington St. Colorado, BC, and ksu to name a few. He was up at KU for the Spring game this past Saturday. He and his family loved their visit and had a good time from all reports.

Another big ass stud WR for this class. I think our shortest current commit is 6'4" and so far all but 1 is a WR/TE. I'm sensing a trend here. LOL

While we got 1 commitment out of the Spring game so far, I'm getting the feeling we may have another 1 or 2 recruits who have privately committed also. Just the feeling I've been getting for a few weeks now based on some of the stuff I'm hearing. Nobody is coming out and saying this guy or that guy is committed but doesn't want it out yet. Rather, I keep hearing things that don't sound quite right to me unless the player in question has already told the coaches they're committed. That's just the vibe I'm getting from what I've heard and 1 of these guys was at the Spring game.

I could be wrong and these guys are just really strong leans to KU right now and not 100% officially committed, but it feels like more than that to me.

As I have always said, "verbals" are nice and give a bit of press and exposure, but getting a kid to actually ink is the true measure. That said, I think Miles is the type of coach who manages to land the vast majority of fish that bite.

Obviously, anyone who reads this website would already know we just got a commitment from Jackson Stoefen a 6'5" 276lbs. 3 star OT out of North Scott High School in Eldridge, IA.

He was also being recruited by Iowa, Minnesota, ISU, ksu, and Nebraska in addition to KU. He was probably being recruited the hardest by Iowa after KU. Iowa was holding off on an official offer though until he showed up at 1 of their camps this summer according to the word on the street. He appears to have shut his recruitment down now, but I won't be surprised to see some other P-5 programs step in with official offers over the next few months. If I had to guess the only other school who could have a chance to sway him is Iowa if they offer, but I'm not confident he'd waiver from KU even then. He's visited KU a couple different times this spring. Both of his parents have also visited with him and from all accounts they really liked KU and Lawrence, and that helped him choose to commit.

I think this kid is a solid OT who could be a multiyear starter for us.

Oh, and BTW KU is now ranked #39 in the nation for our 2020 recruiting class and #6 in the Big 12.

Duece Mayberry a 6'1" 170lbs. 3 star DB out of Owasso HS in Owasso, OK just committed to KU. He's the younger brother of Kyle Mayberry and has been up to KU and Lawrence a bunch of times over the past couple years in addition to this past weekend's football camp.

For those watching the team recruiting rankings, this now makes KU #38 in the nation and holding steady at #6 in the Big 12.

When practices start do walk ons get to eat with the team at the training table? Anyone know what it will cost the out of state walk on to come to KU?

Yes, they do at KU. KU started doing that a lot earlier than most other schools, but I think many others do it also now.

I believe the current out of state costs for tuition/room/board/fees, etc. is about $35,000 per year. Since the walk-ons get to eat at training table, the cost for an out of state walk-on would probably be about $32,500 or so per year.

Kershawn Fisher a 6'3" 215lbs. 3 star OLB out of Northshore HS in Slidell, LA committed to KU a week ago. He chose KU over ksu, Houston and a slew of other G5 offers.

Kyler Pearson a 5'8" 145lbs. unranked WR out of Union HS in Tulsa, OK just committed. Kid was probably the most impressive player at KU's camp the weekend before last. He caught everything thrown his way at the camp and was asked to go through some 1-on-1's at DB and did really well there too, even though he hasn't hardly played the position before. He's been an unknown and looked over recruit by the recruiting sites as well as most colleges. I know KU had been in contact with him before he came up to camp, but I don't think they knew a ton about his abilities until the camp. Him looking like the best WR as well as the best DB at the camp really impressed the coaches.

A few more guys are going to be visiting KU this next weekend as well as the weekend after that, so I won't be surprised to see 1 or 2 more commitments in the next 2 weeks.

He's not gonna be on campus this summer and doubtful he'll make it by fall practices. Doubtful, but not 100% he won't make it in August yet. Just in case anyone reading this is confused, he's a 2019 recruit.

Jaylin Richardson a 6'1" 195lbs. unranked RB out of Schlagle HS in KCK committed to KU. He's got over a dozen G-5 offers and made a really good showing at a camp in St. Louis a couple of weeks ago that sparked interest from several P-5 schools. KU was the 1st one to offer him though and he committed.

Looks like we've had some interesting action on the recruiting front this past week.

Keith Miller a 6'5" 205lbs. 3 star WR out of The Colony HS in The Colony, TX (Houston area) decommitted from KU and committed to Colorado. Maybe he likes the the herbs out there more?

Also, Kirshawn Brown a 6'2" 205lbs. 3 star OLB out of Booker T. Washington HS in Tulsa, OK committed to KU last night (Saturday evening). He's the #10 ranked player in the state of Oklahoma and chose KU over Okie State among others. He's going to be in Lawrence next weekend for an official visit. Kid is a quick hard hitting LB right now at his HS and looks like the kind of OLB or hybrid S/OLB player that would do well in the Big 12. Kind of a big deal beating out in state Okie Light for him also.

Makes it that KU has 2 of the top 10 recruits in the state of Oklahoma now as well. Been a while since that's happened. Back in the Mangino days.

Re: Recruiting Class 2020 News, Updates,etc! - 06/19/19 02:02 PM

Miles is off to a good start with this recruiting class and he needs to get some good wins this season to help him build it up even more. I'd say he needs at least 5 wins with 2 non-conference wins and 3 conference wins with some combination of KSU, TT and TCU or WV.

Re: Recruiting Class 2020 News, Updates,etc! - 06/20/19 08:01 AM

5 wins seems highly unlikely. Quarterback is still a weak spot and we lost a lot of defensive production in Dineen and Wise. Hope I'm wrong but 2-3 wins is my prediction.

5 winners would be difficult with the Betty roster left behind by the High School coach signings lately. Dirk Wedd would have had better success as KU HC than Betty. Went to school with Dirk in Lawrence and has a better grasp of football coaching than the Texass Betty man.

He's going to our Junior Day this coming weekend which should help give him more to think about in regards to staying home at KU. I think he won't start as a true freshman as Nebraska. Turner could develop into a NFL lineman and he would only improve by starting every Saturday at KU for video footage. KU is the smart move. Has same potential as former Olathe South lineman Braden Smith who played at Auburn and was drafted by the Indianapolis Colts in the second round. Probable will de-comitt from his verbal and signed elsewhere.

He was up here with his HS team for KU's team camp a few weeks ago and returned this weekend on an official visit with his HS coach. He has almost a dozen P-5 offers along with a bunch of G-5 offers. Chose KU over Tennessee, Virginia, V-Tech, Georgia Tech among others.

For those who keep track, this puts KU at #31 in the national team recruiting ranks and #4 in the Big 12 according to Rivals.

Also hearing, at least 2 more recruits currently on visits to KU this weekend have also committed. Just waiting for them to announce it publicly.

247 has him as a 3 star recruit, while Rivals had him unrated until today when they gave him a quick cursory high 2 star rating.

How many JUCO players in this class so far? If the staff can hold on to this group it will be a vital stepping stone.

Re: Recruiting Class 2020 News, Updates,etc! - 06/22/19 08:00 PM

I am super pumped about this class. They are quality kids. They are most if not all high schoolers I can’t think of one that is a judo but there maybe a couple. It fills positions of need. How could you not be excited?

That said it is June let’s see what happens in December. I am guessing KU will lose a couple but not many and I am confident when it is all said and done it will be a quality class.

I would really like to see a KU land a quality high school quarterback that they can develop.

Re: Recruiting Class 2020 News, Updates,etc! - 06/23/19 08:57 AM

Looks to be a pretty good class so far, I am waiting for the QB to take us out of the Big 12 cellar. The vast majority of the QBs Miles signed at LSU didn’t pan out. He doesn't exactly have a great track record for finding and developing young QBs. Hopefully his main focus now is finding a QB. It's not a coincidence that the best teams usually have the best QBs...a team only goes as far as their QB can take them.

Updated your post.
Recruiting #'s mean something when the coach in charge has been able to translate his recruits into winning players after the fact. Betty recruiting #'s were always suspect as many fans looked at the level of coaching to be done after recruiting as dismal. Thank god we don't have to rationalize the few things being done right to improve the program the last four years ever again.

What Appyhawk said, and my best guess as to who has the best chances of being bumped up by Rivals to 4 stars would indeed be Ja'Cobee Bryant, Khari Coleman, or maybe even Kenean Caldwell (he's an impressive DT with a 4 star offer list).

If Les Miles could get National top-100 recruit Turner Corcoran, Hayden Pauls, Mason Richman, and Alex Conn to change their verbal in addition to one four star recruit signing such as Daniel Jackson (Bishop Miege) signing, KU football fans will be ambitiously proud.

Maybe Graham Mertz, Breece Hall, or Marcus Hicks will transfer to KU this year.

Heard he runs something like a 4.4-4.5 forty and has nearly a 40 inch vertical and is strong as an ox. Talk about late bloomers, this kid looks like the epitome of a late bloomer. I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up playing in several games this year for us.

Another big get for the 2020 class! He's got quite a few quality offers and I think he's underrated by the recruiting sites.

I thought he was gonna commit to us a couple months ago, and when that didn't happen I thought maybe he was moving on. Glad to see he ended up committing now.

A little bit more about Hatcher. His dad played in the KC Royals farm system for many years and was called up to the Royals during the 1998 season. During his playing career he was 6'3" 235lbs., so Hayden comes from a family with some good athletic genes. I also imagine Hayden isn't done getting bigger yet and could easily play in the 225lbs. - 240lbs. range based on his frame and his dad's build. I think he weighed in at close to 215lbs. at the Nebraska camp where coach Miles saw him. Kid went from 185lbs. out of HS and played at around 190lbs last fall to gaining 25lbs. of mostly muscle in the winter and spring to now be at 215lbs. Heard his dad went through a similar major growth spurt at around the same age.

It'll be interesting to watch his further development here at KU.

This coaching staff did an amazing job of recruiting for the 2019 considering they started from scratch. They quickly established relationships with high school coaches and players and got some commitments.

I expect the upward trend in talent and numbers to continue for 20 & 21.

You make a good point. However the Slant article says Hishaw also visited KU on Jr Day so they have been recruiting him for awhile. The fact that he played QB and DB in HS makes me think he will be an intelligent DB at KU. This tells me Eliot is being creative with his recruiting strategy.

On the surface we look over-committed already and hearing the staff isn't done with the 2020 class still.

That sounds like a couple of currently committed guys will be grayshirts and/or have some other sort of other non-traditional offers, or perhaps they think a couple will likely flip or not make it on signing day.

The star ratings and other offers of some of our commits don't look very impressive and it does raise some concern IMO. Though it does remind me a lot of Leach's recruiting while at TTech where he sought out guys who fit what he wanted to do and didn't always have great ratings or competing offers either. He was obvious quite successful with that strategy too. We'll find out if this is how it'll pan out here at KU with some of these recruits soon enough.

Also, looks like aTm's projected starting FB and son of coach Miles, Ben Miles, is transferring to KU. Think he's going to be an immediately eligible walkon here at KU. Just for a little background, he initially signed with Nebraska out of HS and redshirted his 1 year there before transferring to aTm.

Looks like we got another 2021 recruit to commit.

Ben Easters a 6'3" 195lbs. QB out of Brownsburg HS in Brownsburg, IN(sleeper community NW of Indianapolis) committed to KU. He was at the Les Miles Elite Football Camp on the last weekend of July and stayed an extra day with his family to attend the KU recruiting BBQ which had both potential recruits and current KU commits and players attending with family and friends. So, he's had an up close and personal look at KU, the program, the players, the facilities and the coaches.

Kid looks like a smooth accurate thrower who makes good decisions on the field come game time. He only reports 1 other offer right now, but I won't be surprised if he starts getting quite a few more over this upcoming academic year. In my opinion, he looks like he could be the best QB to commit to KU since Reesing left.

A lot of schools interested.

Spending two days on campus he got a tour of the facilities and the academic side of the program. Jones, who wants to major in Engineering, liked what he saw from the tour and being around the Kansas coaches.

“The new Engineering program buildings and the atmosphere stood out to me most,” he said. “The new facilities were also really impressive, and they really caught my eye as well as how the coaches carried themselves and what they were about.”

Re: Recruiting Class 2020 News, Updates,etc! - 08/31/19 01:10 AM

Looks like Alonso Person a 3 star 6'3" 215lbs. WR/OLB from Narbonne HS in the Harbor City area of Los Angeles (half way between Torrance and Long Beach) committed to KU tonight.

He goes to the same high school that Stephon Robinson went to. Word is he committed to KU without ever visiting based on what he heard from Robinson as well as a connection to one of our defensive coaches. Even though he was being recruited by some schools at WR, KU recruited him as an OLB. Kid is really athletic and long. He's already got good strength for his size, but if he packs on another 15lbs. to 20lbs. while maintaining his athleticism, he's got some really good potential at OLB.

This puts KU at 26 current commitments for the 2020 class and I'm hearing we're still not done! Clearly some of our current commits have non-traditional offers that they've committed to which is a good thing IMHO as most all look like solid recruits who can help the team out if they stick. It also helps out the roster even more and increases competition for spots on the 2 deep in the future.

KU is sitting at the #26 class in the nation and holding steady at #3 in the Big 12 right now according to Rivals BTW for those who follow these things.

KU is sitting at the #26 class in the nation and holding steady at #3 in the Big 12 right now according to Rivals BTW for those who follow these things.

Recruits tend to change their verbal in December. Miles and KU could be headed towards actually "rescinding a scholarship offer." Football coaches doing well to get high interest, but Kansas needs to steal recruits from bigger programs for "Less miles" the KU football program has to travel.

Miles needs to get a few more wins this season to finish 2020 strong and keep the recruits rolling in for 2021.

Did everyone see the defensive stats so far this season in Benton's article? Our rushing defense is ranked 98th for average yards per rush. It makes me wonder if we need another DT or another 2 DT's in this recruting class.

Think we've got around 20 traditional scholarships available for the 2020 class. Several of our current commitments have non-traditional offers, like grayshirts, blueshirts, etc. as well as being preferred walkons with a promise of a scholarship after their 1st year as now allowed per the NCAA rule change 2 years ago. I think we've got 2 to 3 traditional spots still open right now. Couple big fish 4 star guys still being pursued hard right now. Think KU is in both of their top 2 or 3 lists as well.

That would be nice. It does give me confidence in this coaching staff. I don’t think Stanley would be this good under the old staff. Hopefully they are working with one of the other quarterbacks to train him up for next year. Not sure who that would be. I don’t get the sense there is a number two quarterback right now.

" I don’t get the sense there is a number two quarterback right now."

Moose, that's a good point. I admit to being shocked by the complete disappearance of McVittie. Given that up to last few days before Game 1 he was the pre-ordained starter. Then, all of a sudden he wasn't,and hasn't been heard from, or about, since.

Most recent indication have been Locklin is #2, but he did pregame with the runningbacks, so...

Hey Topper, nice job on the recruiting updates! Rivals wasn't very hospitable when I looked up the 4* running back. They must be back in fund raising mode. I'll try again somewhere else.

Re: Recruiting Class 2020 News, Updates,etc! - 10/24/19 07:18 PM

Since nobody else did, I guess I'll post that KU got a new commitment from Steven McBride a 6'1" 165lbs. 3 star WR out of East Ascension HS in Gonzalez, LA (small town about an hour SE of Baton Rouge). He committed to KU a few days ago and Virginia offered him the day after. He was up in Lawrence over the summer for 1 of KU's football camps, so he's somewhat familiar with the school, program and city of Lawrence.

He's been getting a bunch more interest and contacts from other P-5 programs since his KU commitment. Kid is having a good season so far and looks bigger than his listed 165lbs. weight. He catches the ball really well and looks to have very strong hands as catches most everything thrown his way even in heavy traffic or battling with DB's for the ball.

His commitment pushes KU back up into the top 30 for recruiting class rankings according to Rivals.

Locklin is the current #2 and a lot of that is because of Dearman wanting to use his athleticism in the wildcat formation right now.

If you're talking about Ashaad Clayton, nothing has changed except he's been apparently having a lot of fun on twitter tweeting himself in KU gear/uniforms. KU is still in his top 2, but he hasn't made anything official one way or the other yet. Georgia is the other school in his top 2 but it's believed Colorado's late push has put them in the hunt as well. If I had to guess today, I think KU is where he ends up, but nothing is set in stone or anything.

So Locklin is number 2 just because he is the best in the wildcat. What if Stanley went down and KU needed an every down quarterback. Would that be McVittie? Also would McVittie be the projected starter for 2020?

If Stanley goes down, needing a QB with athleticism...whos to say it isn't McVittie or Miles Kendrick for that matter.
There are quarterbacks taking reps in the Dearmon system.
They just havent been needed yet - praise the gods. Hoping they wont be needed and the 2nd and 3rd guys still get a schooling in the system for next year.
There is no way this staff will not have options or plans in place for the future.

We have a frosh QB coming in next year I'm interested is seeing. But I'm in hopes our coaches can lure a nicely ranked run/pass guy to join in that QB competition.
I'm also still very interested in a couple of hungry dog DL.
I really like our receiving corps, our LB look good, and I think our secondary looks good. But you just can have enough good guys for the lines.

This year's early signing period is Dec. 18-20.

I think we'll sign about 18 or 19 in the early signing period with the assumption we can "officially" sign 20 for this class.

Re: Recruiting Class 2020 News, Updates,etc! - 10/31/19 07:24 AM

Just because the 2020 recruiting class for KU is really confusing to try and decipher, I thought I'd clarify my previous post by saying this.

There may be more than 20 recruits who sign something in the early signing period, but I expect 18 or 19 to sign standard LOI's in the early period. I also expect about 20 recruits to sign LOI's in this class, though there's a chance it could be 21 depending on how some things have worked out(which I haven't heard how that's gone).

But like I said, I think there will be anywhere from 5 to as many as 10 recruits signing something other than an official LOI or just announcing their "signing" with KU. They could be signing something official besides a LOI or publicly announce their "signing" with KU without actually signing something.

In the end I believe virtually all of these guys will be on scholarship though. For several it just won't happen for a year in which case they'd count against the 85 total scholarships number but not count towards any year's class. A few others will be grayshirts and at least 1 looks to be a blueshirt in which case his scholarship would count against the 2021 class instead of the 2020 class.

This strategy will help a lot with getting our numbers up to where most other team's numbers are with overall scholarships. This strategy is also not just a quicker fix, but a long term fix too as these guys will have 4 years of eligibility. I certainly think that only a blue blood type program or a future Hall of Fame coach, like coach Miles, is capable of doing this kind of strategy. You have to have a program and/or coach with a lot of clout for recruits to forgo immediate traditional offers to other P-5 or non P-5 D1 schools or even D2 schools to come on their own dime for 1 year before getting their full ride scholarship. I don't think 95% of the other P-5 programs out there could pull this off.

If things go down like I think they will, it'll also be really hard to figure out for about 10 to 15 of these guys which are the ones coming on traditional immediate scholarships versus the other methods. The exception being the blueshirt guy. He obviously won't be announcing anything in December or February, but will instead just show up on campus next Fall.

i think the staff did this based off of what the kids are saying. Stoefen reiterated to 247Sports on Monday that the KU staff “is headed in a different direction at this time” and he decided to “look elsewhere” because it will be best for his future.

makes me think that either they found other OL's that fit the new RPO offense better, or the direction of the staff means choosing to run with a new offense and the kids didn't want to be a part of that style.

That range of versatility would also indicate value for special teams play.

I do not quite understand why OL players would reject the idea of playing in an RPO style offense. Differing versions of RPO are becoming the norm in current NFL systems, which I would think should have strong influence on recruit's interest in developmental training. I assume interest in an NFL career opportunity is a given for a majority of college players.

Division I Football ( Early Period ) December 18, 2019

Les Miles need to get Ky Thomas to de-commit to Kansas University. https://www.cjonline.com/sports/20191015/city-athlete-of-week-topeka-highs-ky-thomas. KU comitt Da'Vonshai Harden could influence Ky Thomas.

Other de-committ possibilities: Daniel Jackson, Johnny Wilson, and Turner Corcoran

Dontae Manning should stay close to home for more playing time.

Casey Collier de-committed from Minnesota and could sign with Kansas University.

Right on pizza.I hope Jarrett sticks. We need more help at that position and he looks like a keeper. What I see on rivals says Kansas 100% thru yesterday with no update.

I like the addition of a good TE. Tight end is a big component for RPO success.

Serious season ending injuries for a couple have played a part in this. KU isn't in a position to take that risk right now.

Some had/have conditional offers and/or non-traditional offers with a possibility of getting a traditional non-conditional offer depending on how the rest of our recruiting went and those players knew all of that from the get go. Our recruiting has been going well and that's put some of these guys in different positions than they'd hoped for or changed the conditions of their offers.

At least that's what's going on as I understand it from what little I've heard since the summer.

Several recruits still high on KU's board are going to be visiting in early December or for the Baylor game. Need to flip a couple of recruits and I think we've got a good chance to do so.

Re: Recruiting Class 2020 News, Updates,etc! - 11/24/19 09:44 AM

Sounds good, but I doubt we can count on Baylor to be cooperative.
Thought the KSt result at Tech yesterday was interesting in that it points to how drastically our fortunes have gone up or down week to week. Improving our talent level across the board, especially on the lines, would go far toward evening that out. Skill guys get all the credit and/or blame, but it's the lines that are the foundation of success.

Armaj Adams said he is ready to call a college home on Twitter. I hope that means Miles will add another OL recruit soon.

Kelan Robinson - 6'3/190 WR 2021 class just commited....

Re: Recruiting Class 2020 News, Updates,etc! - 11/26/19 12:49 AM

With Kelan's commitment it puts KU at the #27 spot in the way too early to mean much of anything yet, national recruiting class rankings for 2021. KU currently sits at #30 nationally and #3 in the Big 12 for the current 2020 class for those who care.

We also just made the top 10 for 4 star top 100 player (currently ranks as the #80 player in the nation), 6'0" 198lbs. WR Quaydarius Davis out of Skyline HS in Dallas, TX.

Looks like we may be getting some help from Marcus Garrett (fellow Skyline HS alum) on the bball team with this one, as he was the 1st person to respond to his top 10 list on twitter saying simply, "Kansas".

It also helps out the roster even more and increases competition for spots on the 2 deep in the future.

Football Player Transfers in Modern Era

Kansas will have a couple players transfer out that opens up a scholarship for the new freshman and allows the transferring player to be eligible immediately with no scholarship available.

If you transfer from a four-year college to an NCAA school, you must complete one academic year in residence at the new school before you can play for or receive travel expenses from the new school, unless you qualify for a transfer exception or waiver.

NCAA eases rules on athlete transfers, redshirts for college football. College athletes will no longer need permission from their coach or school to transfer and receive financial aid from another school. Any current Kansas Football player who is red-shirting has higher probability to transfer. Depth Chart Management (DCM) is needed by Coach Les Miles.

NCAA alllows one transfer “without restriction” during the course of their eligibility.

A 4-4 Transfer

A 4-4 transfer requirements are centered around getting permission to contact and finding an exception to the basic transfer rule rather than academic requirements. A transfer from one four-year school to another four-year school:

Rules for 4-4 Transfers
-Stay eligible at the school you are leaving
-Meet the transfer credit hours requirements
-Become eligible at your new school

Non-traditional offers (grey-shirting) can change to a full scholarship and lead to red-shirting.

Anybody have the skinny on why Khalil Herbert is leaving? I didn't understand the articles I read in October, and to be honest I have not been keeping track of the recruiting or much of the KU news but that one felt weird all season.

They started that bs rumor the day he was hired. Les wouldn't be out recruiting right now if he planned on retiring.

Lot of players going into the transfer portal today. A few QB’s as well.

247 Sports facilities ratings has our digs at #25. Only the Bevos, Sooners and Pokes rank higher in the Big XII. If and when work is actually completed on Old Memorial, we should move up into the top 20 nationwide. BTW: # 1 is Oregon and # 2 is Clemson. No reason we shouldn't have a Top 25 class now is there?

Looks like Caden Cox decommitted tonight. RB from Maize HS. Hate to see a KS kid go.

I wouldn't be surprised to see more, especially those as walk-on, take a scholly elsewhere if it's offered.

I think he was behind the bench at the game last night. Looks like a nice young man and good get.
Now Coach, about those linemen...

Prunty is a 2 star on Rivals.

I like the momentum in this recruiting class. We still need Adams, Magnuson, Fortin and flip Clayton and Remetich. Then hold it all together until early signing day on December 18.

Always looking for good karma. The last guy that I remember that we got from the Tidewater area was a kid named Kwamie Lassiter, a DB who ended up with 10 years in the league, and a pass catching son. We can hope...

Re: Recruiting Class 2020 News, Updates,etc! - 12/08/19 08:02 PM

I thought Lassiter showed the most improvement out of the WR group and the whole WR group showed improvement. Emmett Jones did a good job coaching WRs.

We added another OL recruit Armaj Adams today. Emmett Jones is doing work.

Re: Recruiting Class 2020 News, Updates,etc! - 12/10/19 09:54 AM

He sure looks the part. Highlites show he does good job of finishing his blocks. Plays left tackle, the most coveted OL position to fill with a primetimer (after center).

Tanner Hooker just decommitted today.

A week ahead of December’s early signing period for college football, the Kansas coaching staff’s 2020 recruiting class shrank by one member.

A prep cornerback from Shreveport, La., Tanner Hooker announced Wednesday he is no longer tied to the Jayhawks.

“After a long talk with my family it was best to decide that I should reopen my recruitment,” Hooker wrote in a note he posted to Twitter, in which he thanked KU coaches for recruiting him.

“Formerly graded as a three-star prospect by Rivals, Hooker was listed as a two-star defensive back at the time of his change. However, 247 Sports still rates Hooker, listed at 6-feet and 175 pounds, as a three-star talent.

Hooker made his nonbinding verbal commitment to the Jayhawks back in August.

With his departure, KU’s 2020 class stood at 25 members as of Wednesday, a week before recruits can begin making their pledges to head coach Les Miles and his staff official by signing their letters of intent.”
