Do all teams lose players due to injuries that are career ending? Seems like every year we lose multiple players.

That question could be better addressed by KUCO.

DB has the bad luck or knack for having more kids fall than any coach I can recall...at least those with career enders.

Starting QB lost in the Spring Game for DB. There's a lot of factors. But one is lack of technique taught by DB crew. It can be a killer.

Not sure about "all", but yes many have medical retirements before eligibility is exhausted.

I know some programs are trying to screen for recruits who are more likely to tough it out through bad injuries or even concussions. But it's far from a perfect science.

Guys like Octavius Matthews can't be blamed on any coaching staff or their techniques. If he would have played it's possible he could have become another Hank Gathers type of fatality.

Yeah, previously un-diagnosed medical conditions are hardly the result of a lack of technique being taught by the coaches.

I don't think KU under Beaty has had a significantly(key word here) higher rate of losses due to medical reasons than we've had under other coaches. I think it's more due to a couple of things.

1, since our roster numbers have been so low every loss is significant and much more noticeable as we most often don't have anyone even remotely ready to go to replace them. When you barely have enough starters you can't afford to lose anyone for any reason and when you do, it's a big deal and very obvious thus making medical losses really stand out.

2, we've had to throw more true Freshman and even RS Freshman into the fire before they have been physically ready to go and thus more injury prone too. This part has probably made the overall injury rate higher than normal and maybe added to 1 guy having to quit all together for medical reasons, though the last part here is really hard to say for certain.

Also remember our KO returner (sorry, can't remember his name)
who had to have his insides rearranged).
The lack of roster numbers would change the perception.

Did anyone read the article disputing Keegan's view about our roster numbers? The writer was interviewed on the radio (I believe it was WIBW) last week. In his opinion, the numbers are improved compared to when DB was handed the job and; if he is fired, the next coach will have a better hand then the one given to DB, by the great CW.

Yes medically induced issues are NOT a result of poorly taught techniques. I NEVER said it was kman.

Ryan Schadler. Tough kid with some good talent. Nice that he decided to push through all of that grueling rehab to return to the team.

Where was the article published?

Also, yeah about 70 true scholarship players >>> about 40 true scholarship players.

happens to others, yes. last season, reid najvar, just an outstanding rimington list center, dropped out due to concussions after his junior year.

It happens on every team. Better science + better recognition of the impact of injuries over time = more early "retirements".

Re: Lost players - 07/23/18 10:54 PM

Hard to quantify if we have more. But having your starter QB in the Spring game getting killed by a walk-in is another type of lost player. Entirely on the staff to get the technical rules to the walkons BEFORE the game. Career killer for DB. And the QB.

Re: Lost players - 07/24/18 09:45 AM

One current starter who I'd like to see improve his techniques on contact is Safety Mike Lee. It seemed like 2017 season his techniques may have degraded.

Too often he whiffed and flew by an opponent's ball carrier or only briefly slowed down a quick, strong runner while bouncing off this runner.

He needs to focus more on wrapping up and driving opponents into the turf instead of helmet first blasts to the torso. If not consistently using better techniques, then he could find himself sitting on bench wondering who took and hid his helmet.

Mike Lee himself has already discussed this Saguaro.

Well, yes. But time will tell if he's able to control it.

i've seen him talking twitter smack with k-state's alex barnes over knocking alex out of the game. so, i find it hard to believe lee won't be making more in-game statements.

Add four more to the "career ending injury" list.

Re: Lost players - 08/05/18 06:27 PM

A Mizzou fan, a KU fan, and a KSU fan went hiking to the top of a mountain. They were arguing about who was the best fan of their team. To prove he was the most loyal fan, the KSU supporter jumped off the mountain and yelled "EMAW, Cats number one." Not to be outdone, the KU fan said watch this and pushed the Mizzou fan off the mountain while yelling "Rock Chalk."

Hopefully, we didn't have another career ending injury today.
Freshmen Olineman to top it off.

Jacobi Lott is the young man's name, not "Freshmen Olineman".

Re: Lost players - 08/09/18 07:39 PM

Sorry. I should have added "crappy freshman Olineman", since he was recruited and signed by DB. Would that satisfy you?

Relative of NFL'er Ronnie Lott.

Jesus. How many have we lost for the season so far?
Posted by: Kman_blue

Re: Lost players - 08/10/18 12:59 PM

Too damned many. KU seems to really be snake bit with these kinds of things over the past 8 or 10 years.

And just for a little bit of clarification, Jacobi didn't have an injury per se, but more of a medical emergency not brought on by a direct injury of any kind.

I hope he makes a full recovery and has a long healthy fulfilled life, but his football days are most likely behind him if the scant info I've heard is accurate. There's a small, I say SMALL, chance this was a 1 off freak event, but more likely not. Sucks all around, but thank God we have such great medical staff and our coaches had a protocol in place that prevented this from being a bigger tragedy.

You usually have reliable information ("perhaps his football is behind him"), but I was hoping it wouldn't be, since we do such a sucky job of blocking and tackling in recent years, thought he might have just been winded from a glancing blow.

Amen to that.

I'm not superstitious, but this defies logic. When does luck turn KU's way again?

When the 7th Moon of Saturn aligns with Uranus

I believe the seventh moon is named Myass. The alignment of Myass and Uranus would be breathtaking.

Let's be honest, we are a hoops school, with occasional 20 year spurts with a decent football team. Just hope your son or daughter is a student on the hill when the football team happens to catch lightning in a bottle and win 6 or 7 games in a season.
