Baldwin's Status?

Baldwin's Status? - 02/16/18 04:49 PM

Was Baldwin kicked off of the team? If he's still on the team maybe Ricker will use him next season. It's hard to believe that Beaty hasn't been able to get any production out of Charlot and Baldwin.

That is the single funniest thing I've read on this board in years! Thanks for making my day end in laughter!

Yes it would be nice if Beaty used his time as HC here to explain his moves. If they are useless adds, no difference from the Weis era. Give us fans the info instead of stonewalling the obvious.

JC & transfers are no way to enhance Kansas football. He is Weis 2.0!!

Re: Baldwin's Status? - 02/18/18 05:23 PM

KUCO - Calling HCDB a Weis 2 might be a little harsh. But what are DB's options at this point? The pressure is on, and increased W's are essential. So, if he does not bring in juco and transfer players for immediate help as starters and needed gap players, then what does he do? What specifically would you do to correct the situation and save your job at this point (remembering this is year 4 of a 5 year contract)? And please don't say I would have done something different my first, second, or third year. I'm not putting you down, I am just interested in what you would do. So - What would be your plan NOW to win games and save your job?

I know you didn't ask me, but my response to this issue is as follows:

If Beaty and Zenger TRULY care about the KU grid program, they would BOTH RESIGN immediately. It shouldn't be about them, but that is what it's all boiled down to.

Re: Baldwin's Status? - 02/19/18 10:30 AM

My answer to the question of what to do NOW about winning games and keeping the job. Use the newest 4 year DB players vs the 1-3 year transfers, JCs that have been recruited. It would reassure the fans that KU is going to revert back to being a four year sports institution worthy of being in the BG12. The class of 2018 should be converted to a publicized transition class of final "castoffs". Begin to walk the Beaty talk. Give the QB spot to someone longer than 4 games. Start to talk about the failures of year 1-3 openly to the media and fans. Including his own failures due to inexperience.

I prefer being the HC in year one, of course, or having the two idiots resign immediately but you were wanting something along this line. It's not hard to do my suggestions but it wouldn't help win more games in 2018. But it would save his job in 2018. Just look at our roster right now and you should agree it could have been better populated by now with 4 year players. The rollercoaster ride (roster adds) of DB currently cannot have a good ending IMHO.

If you've been around the last seven years, it's obvious that Zenger doesn't care about KU football. It has been all about him. Twice he vetoed the committee and picked "his" guy that flopped magnificently. He has spent all seven years dragging his feet on the football stadium while doing next to nothing to increase revenue or attendance.

For someone with his overlong tenure, it is depressing that his biggest football related success has been a locker room renovation.

I've been around for countless inept AD's and one really good one and one decent one. Look historically at KU and our interim AD's have done far more to advance the schools athletics than virtually all the others combined.

That said, don't sell Zenger so short.....he's made parking for grid games far easier!

There is something to be said about pulling up to the stadium 60 seconds before game time, park 4 seconds away, pay $2 for a ticket and get 50 yardline seats. Particularly if you're a fan of the opposing team. The master plan is COMPLETE.

I have heard that the calling for season ticket renewal process is not being very fruitful this year for some season. How much would that job suck?

Easy fix for that: Just give out Zinger's, David Beaty's & Clint Bowen's personal cell numbers. Season ticket sales should be BOOMING in no time.

I could straighten that sh!t up in a few minutes. New coaches and all.

My rep didn't even really try. I told him I'd be tailgating, but I had no intention of renewing.

His only response was that continued season ticket holders would be rewarded in the new stadium. Otherwise, he seemed to agree that last season was extremely frustrating and didn't work much harder to get me to renew.

Rewarded in what year? 2038? That might be a little too late for some "renewers".

That's too bad.......kid comes to the worst football team in Big XII history and can't even get a "Rudy" moment. frown confused

It's not like we didn't recognize he was a gamble when he was dismissed from Bama.

I figured he'd get on the field, but I'm not super shocked that a kid that got dismissed from Bama isn't doing the work to get himself on the field.

I hope we are done taking players that get kicked out of other schools. After we fire Zenger then the new AD should make that a policy. Laquivionte Gonzalez and Charles Baldwin were a waste of time and money.

Kansas has only a limited amount of resources, and so we waste it on staff raises and contract extensions while no win season over season is occurring. Show both Beaty and Bowen the door out of town. I don't care HOW much they love Lawrence. They can't do the job of turnaround specialists.

To me, it would be the same as any HS or JUCO recruit. Is the talent worth taking the risk? If yes, then go for it.

I have also never heard that Quiv got dismissed from Texas A&M.

Pizza never said he did get dismissed from Texas A&M. But intent is the same that under Beaty we are wasting resources that can’t possibly create a turnaround here.

Quiv was a one year player (2016) with hands of stone on ST.

Nope HS players give us 4 years to teach them BG12. “Castoffs” are too risky.

I understand, so by the "rule" pizzanbeer suggested for our new hypothetical AD, Quiv could still end up at KU and be a "waste of time and money"...This despite him having a better year receiving than ANY Weis or Gill receiver...

So I guess I'm curious. We've had plenty of HS and JUCO receivers come in and not pan out or also get dismissed. What makes them a better use of resources than a transfer?

Yes by the new rule 50% better. Is anything ever 100% better?

Re: Baldwin's Status? - 02/21/18 05:32 PM

Until the season or spring ball starts, we're still at a wait and see with Baldwin. Considering how sure many people believed that he'd play last year, I'm not sure why those similar sources are to be believed when they say he's not playing.

Also, if you hire the "right coach," you don't force things down his throat. (See: Bill Self, Bechard, etc) If you think you need to force recruiting rules on a head coach, you've probably hired the wrong guy and should hire a better one.

Next to nothing has worked for KU football regardless of coach in the last 8 years. If you start adding rules for any item that failed and wasted time and money, you're basically at scrapping the entire football program.

Re: Baldwin's Status? - 02/21/18 07:58 PM

8 years regardless of coach is CW & sonny boy DB. Your reasoning is rather weak.

I guess I glossed over Pizzanbeer's post with the suggested rule for recruiting. I was merely helping to clarify what happened with him.

As for Quiv, I think he produced while at KU and was 1 of our best WR's despite his horrible mishaps in kick return. He was worth it IMHO, but I wished he had used better judgement last year and not gotten kicked off the team as we could have used him.

Re: Baldwin's Status? - 02/22/18 07:45 AM

I agree with you. Other than Sims, he was statistically our best receiver since Briscoe and Meier.

While I don't necessarily expect it, I would love for the light to come on for Baldwin and him to contribute this season.

In the 80's, Willie Vaughn was the best WR around for Kansas.

Willie Vaughn was just about uncoverable and that included for the corn and the land thieves too.

Re: Baldwin's Status? - 02/23/18 09:13 PM

I made a mistake on Gonzalez getting kicked out of A&M. KU still needs a rule about not taking any players that get kicked out of other schools. We don't need to be "Last Chance" P5.

No kidding. I understand the NEED to renovate, but it's like sliding a pig into a hooters girl outfit....it's still a pig. To me, winning games should be more important to landing us in a P4 conference when the Truckstop Ten goes away in a couple years rather than having an upgraded stadium (the real reason they are in a hurry to remodel).

Memorial Stadium is a complete laughingstock. It is hands down the worst stadium in P5 football. I have been in far better facilities at average DIII schools. Of course they are 1/4 the size, but most have better seating, sight lines, ancillary services and better crowds.

I feel that we may truly be nearing the end of football at KU unless we get SERIOUS about trying to put even just a below mediocre product on the field, or can invent a time machine and go back to reverse what happened after the 2009 season.

Unfortunately, our chancellor and AD are using the $350M number that we haven't reached as a way to act like we care about football.

I believe there are a lot of people that care... they just won’t support what has been on the field the last few years. No one cares more than the coaching staff. They just haven’t figured out how to win yet and time is running out for them and the AD. Any way you slice it though we are in better shape now to take a step forward than we were after Weis departure.

Re: Baldwin's Status? - 03/04/18 04:04 PM

We're in a better position talent-wise, but that's not saying much considering how bad Weis left us.

We still have the same jackass AD. We have blown 18.5M+ on failed head coaches. Our stadium and facilities haven't drastically improved, and we're losing ground on football facilities in our conference since Z showed up. Attendance is trending down and down and down.

Plus, we have the giant red flag of a failed program that cycles through coaches at an unprecedented rate.

Until Zenger is gone, I wouldn't and don't expect the results to change. It's not like he has some ace coach up his sleeve that he skipped the first two times.

Re: Baldwin's Status? - 03/04/18 07:02 PM

Even in the Weis moment we had better offensive skill players than what Beaty has brought in. We are not talented but are reaching max numbers on the roster at the very least atta boy for boy blunder.

AD is totally at fault for giving a Beaty job when it needed a heavyweight
