I've had sunflower, directv and now surewest (everest) HD. DirecTV seemed to look the best consistently. sunflower was next and surewest is definitely last. except for the network channels, surewest HD looks like $hit. went for the cheap prices...

Honestly... unless you have 2 different cable providers in your house, running same channel side by side, then anyone making claims of better than the other is full of shat.

Not where our ATT "HD" was concerned. It was noticibly better once we made the switch to comcast.

When talking about HD compression, the difference between some providers is pretty blatant. See the link i posted above for example, one is severely blocky and the other isn't, pretty obvious even without a side by side.

I am so proud of all the geekiness going on in here!
HD broadcasts will get a little better on cable when the cable companies stop sending the analog cable channels to you. Copper and Fiber can only support a certain amount of bandwidth, and analog channels take somewhere around 6 times the bandwidth for 1 channel in comparison with digital (depending on compression bitrate).
That's assuming the cable companies don't use the bandwidth to expand their channel selection (or that the FCC doesn't designate the bandwidth for some other spectrum use).
This doesn't take into account new encoding techniques either. As certain encoders evolve, they become more efficient.
The question you should ask is: will the JTV games ever actually be in HD or will they simply upconvert the games. It's a hellova lot cheaper to buy an upconverter than it is to buy an entire suite of equipment needed to actually produce and transmit a REAL HD broadcast.

Now we're gettin' somewhere. I LOVE the "what is REAL HD, Alex?" debates.
Seems to me that the providers have likened the definition/s of HD to be similar to what has happened with organic food.
I'm just ecstatic to hear there WILL be JTV broadcasts.

Me too Appy. It's almost as endearing as watching someone try to tell me their tv with a 200Hz refresh rate (that cost them an extra grand) is better than a plain jane HD set.
*knocks on guys forehead* HELLO genius, if the maximum framerate for HD is 60 frames per second, hope you're enjoying those other 140 frames you never see! Now come with me to check out my oceanfront property in nevada...

ahem, see motion interpolation
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motion_interpolation
But yeah a lot of tv's don't even do interpolation, so that's what a consumer should really be looking for. When many manufacturers say their display is 200Hz, they are talking about the backlight rate rather than framerate. If you're buying a 60+ Hz tv that doesn't do interpolation, you're getting ripped off.
